C. ba ie CO fe a Foreword “Time is a sort of river of passing events’, said Marcus Aurelius. With this thought in mind we have tried to portray for you the most important events of the school year 1940-41. As the clock has ticked away, we have engaged in many activities. Time will change our faces and our opinions, but we hope that it will forever keep alive the memory of our school friends and activities. Even though you cannot turn back the clock of time, you can, in future years, turn through these pages and recall to memory some of the experiences of this year. e a YELLOW JACKET Uedication We, the senior class of nineteen hundred and forty- one, gratefully and affectionately dedicate this volume of the YELLOW JACKET to Miss Nancy Burge, whose high ideals have encouraged us to higher and nobler thinking. Her kind understanding and fine sense of humor have made this school year a most enjoyable and successful one. We are happy to have the oppor- tunity to show our deep appreciation in this way. Ahoy, Classmates, We're at the school year’s end. Stop for just a tiny moment. Will you fail or will you win? We have mounted up the ladder With honest toil and grace; We will fight to save the honors Never tiring in the race. Time has brought so many changes As we battled on our way; Yet we passed by all the dangers And we reached the parting day. As we part on life’s great highway, Think what you have tried to do; Never shirk or make a by-way Just build your character firm and true. Now the years have come and gone And we have done our best; We'll take with us fond memories And leave to you the rest. YELLOW JACKET TRILBY BEAVER, Class Poet. Time moved up and the clock hands departed from the clock face and left me gazing into the year of °51. There I saw the whereabouts and occupations of my former classmates. They came before me as the following people: Hazel Sutton and Louise Bost are joint owners of a beauty salon. Pauline Corriher is teaching Home Economics in Landis High School. Helen Beaver is a special reporter for the New York Times. Her latest “scoop” is the marriage of Eva Mae Dishman. Evelyn Foutz has just received the award for the most beautiful eyes in America; the judges were Harold Campbell, Luther Weddington, and Richard Sutton. Hazel Smith is teaching French in Landis University while her sister, Addie Mae, resides as the faithful wife of the President of the University. ' The most successful business man of the year is none other than Fred Triece, Jr., owner of many business firms from New York to San Francisco. His good looking secretary is Mary Lee Smith. The Reverend J. C. Hill has the honor of being the pastor of Landis Baptist Church, while Della Mae Beaver teaches a class. Melba Ketner’s love for the song, “In My Merry Oldsmobile,’ has been worth while because she now sells Oldsmobiles for Corriher Finance Company, owned and operated by Joel Corriher. Louise Sloope now has an easy job amusing a rich old man with her wise cracks while she makes love to his son. Two local girls are now champions, for Ruth Beaver excels in basketball and Imogene Bost is the greatest figure skater. Helen Karriker is composing both music and lyrics for the world’s most famous maestro, Paul Campbell. Trilby Beaver, the famous playright, is now writing the script “Red Headed Angel’ co- starring Evelyn Suttle and Floyd Daugherty. James Massey’s and Alexander Roberts’ ability to act took them places for they are outstanding comedians in Hollywood. Ruth Wright is demonstrating a dimple machine invented by Mack Pless. The Harmonettes heard over station S-E-N-I-O-R are none other than Louise Turner, Sadie Linker, Ruth Freeze, and Pauline Brown with Carl Pless announcing. Virginia Rutledge got her last piece of jewelry, (a ring), and with it goes the man. Herman Eagle is married to a good-looking blonde, lives in his winter home at Miami, drives a new Mercury every year, and owns a chain of Cafes from Maine to Miami. Allie Murphy, after wandering rather aimlessly around the world in search for that certain young man, has come back home to resume hez job in Woolworth’s store. Faye Roseman has become a well known nurse. At present she is helping Dr. Ernest Garver at the Wise Hospital, named for the famous scientist, Clara Wise. Colon Seaford, High School Principal, has added to his faculty Beatrice Goodnight and Daisy Overcash. Everette Allman, who has joined the Hayden Carter Circus, has the honor of presenting to the world the tallest and shortest man, none other than Clarence Hamilton and Cecil Linn. The world’s most daring man is Jack Sloope, test pilot for transport planes, and the pretty air- hostess is Ruth Sechler. Mr. Golden Wise is founder and president of the Wise Business College. Carl Goodman, inventor of the new mono-cyclinder tractor, has as his secretary Valerie Sowers. Nellie Suddeth has moved back to her home town in Georgia where she works in a telephone office. Leona Helms is sound effects technician for the radio program “Litaker versus Weddington” starring Gladys Litaker and Ethel Weddington. Helen Kimball, who has been studying voice in Paris, has just returned to make an Operatic Tour of the Americas. Rachel Swink and Vaydeen Rogers are owners of a large Department Store on Rainbow Drive in Landis, North Carolina. Just as I saw a dim-shadow that I believed was myself, the clock hands pushed me back and there I stood again gazing in the clock face and wondering what the future holds for me. The basketball clock has unwound. But that’s no sign it has stopped, for next year it will be wound. Those days of hard practicing were not spent in vain although the boys didn’t win many games. They had lots of fun trying to beat their opponents, but nevertheless they weren’t very successful. One of the most exciting games was the one between China Grove and Landis. Hurrah for Landis, because they kept China Grove guessing until the whistle blew. We feel as if our team will be one of the leaders in the county next year.
