Aafory of fda 641,55 of 39 Some people think t'Life begins at forty , but to us, thc Seniors of 139, life began in the fall of '35 when after struggling through the first seven years of school we entered high school as Green Freshmen , There were 62 of us as we ventured towards this adventure. And what an adventure! Mighty Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors walked around with their disgusted looks Mwhere in the world did you come from? whenever they gazed at us Freshmen. Determined to win ourselves a name in Landis High we elected officers, I was chosen President, Mary Gladys Fisher Vice-President, and Margaret Patterson Secretary-Treasurer. Under the guidance of Miss Parker and Mr. Bennett we intended to show the upperclassmen our talents. Many people went out for school activities, especially Glee Club and Basketball. After shedding many tears in Home Economics, and writing many themes in study hall, our first year in high school had finished, a year that began our high school life. The Sophomore year started with only 59 students. This decrease was mostly because of marriages or becoming tired of school, nevertheless, we were upperclassmen now and could 'iboss the Freshmen around. This, perhaps, was our saddest year because one of our dearest members, Marie Heglar was taken away from us by death. We again made a name for ourselves by our activities in Glee Club, Basketball and Agricultural Club. This year we elected Mary Gladys Fisher President, James Chapman Vice-President, Mildred James Secretary-Treasurer. We made a little money that year, enough to open a savings account. During the summer we sponsored many programs and happily started our Junior year with money towards our Junior expenses. We had S3 Juniors. To guide us as Juniors we elected Lucile Honeycutt as President, Madeline Cavin as Vice-President, James Chapman as Secretary and Mildred James as Treasurer. Miss Black fMrs. Ralph Linn nowj and Miss Bowlin were to help lead us on this adventure. What a busy year we had as 'tJolly Juniors I Again the members of our class were active in Basketball Cone of our classmates, Sarah Drye, was chosen Captainb, Glee Club, and to this we added Dramatics, Annual Staff, School Paper Staff. We had a large representation in the National Honorary Beta Club. - After Christmas the cast for the play Mammy's Li'l Wild Rose was announced. Our first public performance! We thought it was very successful and plunged ahead with bigger ideas, the most important of which was the annual Junior-Senior Banquet. This gala affair was held at the Yadkin Hotel and was carried out very successfully Cwe hopedb using Valentine as our theme. What excitement! Getting bids, new dresses, and learning to dance because it was this year, for the iirst time, that we furnished as entertainment dancing at the banquet. This delightful occasion was followed several months later by a Senior-Junior Prom in the gym, sponsored by our grade parents, putting the tinal touch on a never-to-be-forgotten year. Forty-eight of us came back to begin our last year as t'Dignified Seniors , although we didn't deserve this name. Again We Seniors took great part in school activities and we often wondered what the school would ever do without us. Our officers for this year were: Mary Gladys Fisher President, James Chapman Vice-President, and Emojean Shulenberger Secretary-Treasurer. After we got our rings we really began to feel our importance and we were ready to make our Senior year our most pleasant one. One of our girls, Margaret Patterson, won a M.G.M. screen test and also the title Miss Landis-China Grovel' in beauty contests. The Staff for the YELLOW JACKET was announced and a great campaign of getting ads, taking pictures, trying to sell annuals, and making money began, Our play Lindy Lou , was a huge success and encouraged by this success we sponsored Hcookingn at the annual Basketball Tourna- ment. We really Hcame outl' in grand style at the Junior-Senior Banquet at the Yadkin Hotel. The Juniors gave us a wonderful trip to Treasure Island, feeding us bountifully and entertaining us with dancing, bingo, and Chinese Checkers. The Senior-Junior Prom, sponsored again by our grade parents, ended our social life as Seniors. We felt rather sad as the night faded away and we realized that never again would we be together as Juniors and Seniors of Landis High School. Preparation for commencement kept us busy for the last few weeks. So commencement finished our school life in four years, and now we are prepared to face the world courageously and make a name for ourselves in the World as we have in high school. enior Cfafw ,Zap ec? The wind howled, the windows rattled, and suddenly the door burst open and in walked the ghostliest hgure I have ever seen. I waited, horrified, and it seemed hours before the weird creature spoke, HI am the spirit of your class of '39, and I shall reveal to you the occupations and the whereabouts of your former classmates. I listened fascinated to the low voice as it continued. Dorothy Bost is a hair stylist and her coiffeurs are copied the world over by well dressed women, while Evelyn McCorkle and Dico Murphy supply the latest creation in hats. Having gone poetical Harry Hill is a successful poet, his latest being 'tGone With the Breeze. Her love for China Grove hasn't deserted her for Margaret Fleming now owns a Florist Shop there. Alma Lee Morrison's favorite pastime, bicycling, has led her on to national honors for she was the only woman to enter the Six Day Bike Race. Queen of taps is Emojean Shulenberger who devotes her time to both Hollywood and Broad-A Way- . Evelyn Linn finally talked a millionaire into marrying her. She now resides in a small town running everything and everybody. With a new V-S and a chain of bakeries, J. W. Bostian is making plenty of dough. Still the best of pals, Kathleen Beaver, Ruby Ballard, and Rachel Towell are singing over the new Landis radio station H-E-L-P, daily, with Bennett Parks as announcer. Happily married Lucile Honeycutt has trouble with Junior because, like his mother, he talks so fast he's had to repeat the first grade for three years. Senator James Chapman of N. C. is a successful politician with Ruth Rymer as his efficient secretary. Fred and Nita Garver own a nightclub jointly with Orchestra Leader Odell Hess and his vocalist, the famous Mary Gladys Fisher, appearing nightly. A national hero is aviator Duard Sloop who recently made a non-stop flight from Landis to China Grove with co-pilot Fred Heglar also receiving honors. Ruth Weast works in a shoe store owned by Henry Corriher. Magnetic personality, plus numerous boy friends resulted in a Dating Agency run by Marie Beaver and Katheleen Basinger for the less fortunate. America's No. 1 Model is Madeline Cavin who models for an exclusive shop in New York City, and in our own home town Ray Smith is proprietor of a Jewelry Store with Helen Wedding- ton as his assistant. Hollywoodis glamour girl is the beautiful Margaret Patterson who finally crashed the movies. R. D. Wright is a scenario writer for M.G.M. While Hazel Suther is an artist for Walt Disney and still another of our classmates, Mabel Karriker, is one of Hollywood's greatest critics. Being studious didn't keep Rebekah Taylor from advancing in sports for she is now the national tennis champion, while Herman Garrison is an all American football star. Sarah Drye always has liked pets and V-8's so she has compromised, devoting her time to being a Ford saleslady and running a pet shop. A music lesson on Friday certainly did help Martha Wertz for she is now a noted concert pianist. Ruby Davis and Margaret Goodman chose nursing as their profession. Ruby is Superintendent of nurses at Mooresville Hospital, while Margaret is a nurse companion to a rich old lady. An heiress to millions, Ineze Medlin is touring Europe while Ora Lee Walker is a Duchess after marrying into foreign nobility. Her ability to present poems with such dramatic force has helped Pearl Beaver much in her dramatic career. Mildred Mull and Elsie Yarbrough continued typing. Mildred is a stenographer in Boston, and Elsie is secretary to a steel magnet. Irene Troutman's enduring patience gained her a position as matron in the Landis Orphans Home. A gossip columnist for the Post, Ineze Ketner keeps up on all the latest news and she often praises her old friend, the champion swimmer, none other than Ivetus Thompson. 'fAnd you, it added with a fiendish chuckle, shall continue your feeble efforts at writing 'Stuff' being as unsuccessful as ever. With a mocking bow my visitor was gone, 'fOh,V' l mumbled, What a strange dream as I returned from the land of nod. MILDRED JAMES, Prophet. Page Eighteen
