Mrs. Brown and her eighteen-year-old daughter Jean, who had just graduated from Stevens High, were seated in comfortable chairs on the porch of their lovely home. I listened as they talked. Oh mother, to think that I have no more schoolwork to worry about now, no Algebra, English, or History. I canlt believe it. At last I can take life easy with no more hard work and drudgeryf' Mrs. Brown looked wi'th amazement at her daughter. Jean, you really shouldn't say that because it isn't true. The years you spent might have been long and weary and you might think that it was all hard work and drudgery, but all of that is nothing like the hardships you'll have 'to endure in your future years, if you want to succeed. Of course, there will be pleasant and exciting times then, as you had them in school: but as you Worked hard in school, so you must keep on working until you reach your goal. Neither Jean nor her mother spoke for several moments. Then suddenly Jean's face lost its thoughtful expression and she began 'to laugh. I'll never forget the day I first went into Stevens High with all the other girls, as a meite, unnoticed Sophomore. Those upperclassmen seemed so high and mighty and didn't even as much as look at us. Probably when you became Seniors you treated 'the Sophomores in exactly the same way, her mother added laughingly. Jean couldn't possibly keep a straight face: she knew that it was the truth. She went on to tell how, as Sophonlores, each girl picked her own extra-curricular club and those musically inclined joined 'the Glee Club, the Orchestra, or the Drum and Bugle Corps. By the time the linal examinations were over, and all the eighth periods Served, they were ready for a well-earned vacation. Then as Juniors we organized and with tl1e kind help of o11r adviser, Mrs. Price, we elected officers. Betty Smith became our president, Betty Barrick vice-president, Jane Luttenberger, secretary, and Virginia Kinney, historian. We chose brown and white as our class colors. Our basketball team, captained by Jeanne Graei, won 'the basketball champ-ionship. Jeanne Graeff was also the highest scorer in the inter-class track meet. 'Tll never forget how I enjoyed tl1e oratorio 'Messiah' a11d tl1e operetta 'Patience' that the Glee Clubs gave that year. There were so many 'things to talk about during Jean's Junior year in high school. Jean Rineer was awarded the medal for the best essay from the American History classes on the subject, The Influence of the Founders of the Clolonies, 1607-16607. Betty Cornelius, Jane Ehrhart, and Helen Levy were elected to the National Honor Society. During the summer vacation one morning Jean noticed in the paper Ellen McCormick had been chosen as Miss Lancaster . MY! but she was proud of her and that she was from the class of '37, You certainly thought a lot of yourself when you became a Senior, didn't you, Jean? her mother asked. Well, if you ask me, I think it was something to be eager for and proud of. We had waited a long tin1e 'to become Seniors and we tried to act as very sophisticated ones. The class held anotltiir election and chose Dorothy Koth to preside over their Senior meetings as president. Her assistant, as vice-president, was Dorothy llenninger. They needed an account of their meeiinirs, so Viola Hatton was elected Secretary. Of course the class needed money, and the job of collecting dues was given to Betty Farling. Those now elected to the National Honor Society were Betty Barrick, Viola Hatton, Mary Jane Kain, Barbara Kienzy, Dorothy Koth, Kathryn Miller, Vera Reese, Dorothy Renninger, Jean Rineer, Harriet Robinson, Regina Smith, B'eatrice Weaver, Helen W'endler, and Dorothy Worrest. The basketball championship was won again in the Senior year. There was the oratorio Elijah , A large group of girls entered the essay contest sponsored by the D. A. R. Prizes were awarded to Marie Winsinger, Harriet Robinson, and Frances Prutzman, for their essays on the topic. Colonial Women of AEairs. Soon various committees were placed busily at work to choose the class. motto and flower, to select the class song and poem, and to plan for Class Day. Then Kathryn Miller, Regina Smith, Catharine Morrison, and Dorothy Koth, were called upon to display their dramatic ability in the Senior Play Skidding . All of a sudden chimes were heard pealing forth from 31 near-by church. That ln-ings back thoughts of the 'Ding Dong Chorus' from the olteretta 'The Chimes of NliI'1l12lllll5 , doesn't it? I should say it does. VVe practiced hard on that operetta but it was lots of fun, especially the early morning rehearsals and the pink slips. Much success of that operetta was due to Dorothy Renninger and June Smith, who had two female leads. A few weeks passed, then came the Baccalaureate Service, Class Day, and iinally Commencement-June 17, 1937. Excitment and never-to-be-forgotten days! Neither could anyone forget all the kindness and faithfulness shown by all the teachers, all of the many friendships that had been made in school, and last of all I1 one could forget Stevens High School itself. Memories of it will always linger in th minds of the '37's no matter what happens. ' Retrospect Let us today look back across the span Twixt dark and dawn, and to our conscience say, Because of some good act to boy or man, The world is better that we live today. Looking backward across the span of three years, we recall many pleasant associa- tions and memories. We cannot help looking back and viewing with pride our many attainments both scholastic and athletic. As for the teachers, we hope that as they look back over the classes that have graduated they will have only pleasant memories to recall of the class of 1937. September 6, 1934, found us enrolled as Sophomores at L. H. S. WVe truly were greeng but according to the upperclassmen, we were greener, so much so that Mr. Herr had to adjust his glasses to determine whether the lights were red or green. Probably the most outstanding mrmories of this lirst year, can be summed up in three words: Who? Where? What? After two months of mental relaxation we returned not as greenies, but as sophisti- cated juniors. All hidden talent was now brought to light, and we sallied forth in the social life of the school with our colors of brown and white proudly flying, During this year we held our first class meeting. Then we first felt the spirit of fellowship which we have enjoyed for the last two years. Under the watchful and guiding eye of Mr. Patterson we elected class otlicers for our junior year: President .......................................................................,.................... Robert Reed Vice-President .... Clarence Hoar Secretary ..4... .... C harles Clair Treasurer ....,..,....,....................,..,...........................,........... ............... J ohn Krantz Historian ..........................,...,....................................................... Robert Schafer In the meantime many ofour members were being admitted to such activities as Honor Society, Vidette Staff, Glee Club, and Hi-Y. We ended our Junior year with a great determination to come back and do bigger and better things in the fall of 19364 We now passed into our last year. As lower classmen we said little about individual genius on our class roll, but as seniors we assumed a more dignified than proud air, and accomplished much. Officers for this last year were as follows: President ........................ .....,.,., . . ..... ........ .... J a mes Shreve Vice-President .... ........... J ohn Oller Secretary ......... .,... . . Charles Clair Treasurer .................................. . ........ .. .......................,........... Burleigh Cooper Historian .............. ............ . .............. ..... .... ..... ................. ........ R o b e 1 ' t Schafer As seniors we were considered leadersg and the members who acted in this capacity were Charles Clair, who very ably assumed the presidency of the Student Council: John Oller, who became editor-in-chief of the Vidette: and Walter Parkin, who was president of the Honor Society. All varsity sports, the Glee club, the Band, the Orchestra, Cheer-leading, the Intra- mural Council, and Hi-Y were well led by members of our class. One of the highlights of our Senior year was the Senior Prom, held on February 1. Here we bade farewell to the Mid-Seniors. Two other outstanding events of the last semester were the plays, Take my Advicei' given by the Student Council, and Skidding given by our class. A new organization was introduced for the first time this year, The F. C. A., a National organization, dealing with the Vocational course of Boys High. Our final prom was held during the month of June, 2111 event which helped the con- tinuance of acquaintances made at the mid-year prom. Then came the finish of our high school days with the exchanging of name cards, autographs, and pictures. Class Day, conducted in our own auditorium, and our Bacca- laureate Service, held June 13, at St. Paul's Reformed Church, Rev. T. A. Alspach, D.D. minister, soon followed. Then came Connnenccment night, which closed our school activities with appropriate orations. And now as we are leaving high school to find our places in this great world let us not forget the underclassmen. They might not need nsg but they mightg So let our heads be just in sight. A smile as small as ours might be Precisely their necessity. And as for us, the class of 1937, may we always remember Thackeray's statement: The world is a looking glass, and gives back to every man the reflection of his own face. Frown at it, and it in turn will look sourly upon you: laugh at it and with it and it is a jolly kind companion. ' Girls' Class Will To will or not to will- That is the question: Whether 'tis nobler for the class of '37 To keep its virtues and unequalled talents, Or bestow them on the underclassmen, And, by our kindness, help them: To give, to keep no more: And by our gift to leave them perfect knowvle dge And a thousand other talents they'll be heir to. h We, the class of 1937 from Stevens High School, do bequeat 'the following of our precious articles and possessions to the persons herein mentioned:- 0116 son it's We bestow Arlene W0lfe's avoirdupois upon Melanie Pollack. Our ability to comprehend we leave to the oncoming Physics class. We transfer tl1e debating lH21lIl'S undefeated record to the Boys High athletic teams- and all. We will Helen Levy's college hoard exams to anyone else who can use them. To Miriam Klivansky we leave Mae Maxwell's art ability. We bequeath the boisterousness of Marie Winsinger to Dot Kranich. Kitty Bevis's dates we bestow upon any one who needs them. We will Amelia Forney's tripping capacity to Rachel Moore. To Sara Slaughter we bequeath June Smith's vocal talent. Betty Barrick's wise cracks we leave to the girls behind the candy stand. Betty Cornelius wills her wanness in Latin class to Kate Stumpf. To Anna May Ackerman we bequeath the ability of Jean Bordner and Helen Garri- to make funny scarecrows. Jean Rineer leaves her ability to hawl out the debaters to someone else who thinks for the good of the team. We appoint Ruth Warfel and Merial Beachrnan as executors. And talents of great worth and virtue. With this bequest are turned from us, the Worthy, And saved till '38, Boys' Class Will We, the Graduating Class of One Thousand, Nine Hundred, Thirty-seven, of the Lancaster Boys' High School, in an unusual moment of cooperation and general clarity of mind, do publish this our last will and testament. This document by our class is unusual in the fact that we instead of being about to die, are about to start the long years of manhood. Most wills dispose df the usual, drab, unexciting articles of everyday life. Here, however, we leave behind us very cherished and tangible possessions of our school days, reminiscent of good times too numerous to count. I. To the rather insignificant: Mid-Seniors in general, we do bequeath our noble characteristics of Self-satisfaction Enviableness Nonchalance Inimitableness Optimism Respectability II. To those whom we believe to be especially deserving and meritorious we leave cer- tain very noted possessions of members of our class who are, in a sense, passing on. 1. Bill Schaeffer's college humor, Ccynicism to youj to Eddie Benedick. 2. Les Garner's studious attitude to Charles Piersol. 3. Walt Parkin leaves his bulk 'to Tiny Nagle. 4. Cooper, Engle, Erisman, and Oller leave Lancaster for California and points west. 5. Jim Shreve refuses no leave his oratorical ability to anyone. He will probably need it to sell pink shoe strings. 6. Dick Powers leaves his speed to Barney Ewell. 7. Harry Raub leaves John Hondras's ability to do Latin to Miss Mumma's next Latin 8 Class. 8. Schafer and Trapnell leave their megaphones to Newswanger. 9. Mr. Hartranft's Social Problems classes leave him all the sheets of scratch paper in the school. 10. Kenny Dicely leaves his deep bass voice to Gordon Eby. III. We leave in the near future 'thc revered halls of L. H. S. to a group of youngsters in knee-pants and anklets. IV. To the janitors, the expert marksmen of the class leave wads of paper in the chandeliers. If we have forgotten anything, we need not mention it anyway, because if it has been left lying around loose, someone else probably has it already, or will certainly soon get it. We will before long be gone and forgo'tteu, but you live in our memory now as for- ever, L. H. S. Closed is our last will and testament. Administrator ,John Oller, Jr. Ruth Beattie, A. M. Sarah E.
