To refresh our minds about each other and to sum up our past illustrious UID deeds we write our 'Class History. The first half of our Freshman year was spent in Junior High School. We wondered why we were there and soon were informed that low Freshman were no longer considered a necessary factor about the Senior High. Our feelings were hurt considerably at that time, but now we pride ourselves in the fact that we are the first graduating class to have had our birth in Junior High Schools. On the eve of February 1, 1926 some of our hearts were full of joyful an- ticipation and others of growing fear of our entrance to Stevens High. Some of our older friends had told us that the upper classmen were accustomed to serve castor oil to the new recruits: this was our chief worry now. The next morning bright and early we were before the Illustrious Portals of Knowledge-Stevens High School. We entered the school with the proper amount of Freshman humilityg we were thrilled to the soul if a Senior happened to cast a kind look towards any one of us, while the mere mention of Virgil and Trig. sent our respect soaring higher than the Plateau of Tlibet. We were astounded by the antiquity of the place, especially the marble stairs which bore the impression of the feet of thousands of Freshmen of years gone by. After finding our way to the Auditorium we soon encountered some more girls who were to be our companions for the next three and one-half years. When th-e bell for chapel rang, we heard the thundering of feet on the stairs and found it to be the other students racing as if to see a newly arrived menagerie. VVe were frightened Cas first year people usually arel at their icy stare, but Mr. Peters soon calmed our fears by a few kindly words and told the others to make us feel at home. CThe custom of administering castor oil had been abandoned, so we were now quite at easel. The twain had met: East Junior plus West Junior equals Class of 1929. VVe were soon found to be the largest class in the school. This made us very haplpy until some Sophomore reminded us that 'tquality comes in small bundles. Our feelings were pinched, but that Sophomore little realized- the fire she would stir in us. From then on we decided to make our -class, though large. a success. Soon we were asked to join the Athenian Literary Society. The class re- sponded as a whole. An active part was taken by our girls in all the athletics permitted to Freshmen. The following months ran along rather smoothly although we met with many obstacles. June came, bringing exams and flowers Clilies for failuresj Then on June 27 we rushed home eager C all to show our reports to our parents. After enjoying a short vacation of two months we returned in Sept-emlber, 1926, as Sophomores. At the beginning of this year we received more classmates in the personages of many girls from the Neffsville Junior High. This year we rested more comfortably. Again we shone in Athletics. We contributed many of our girls to the Senior Tournament, the Hockey Squad, and the Track Team. lVe had one lone menrber, Jane McGinnis, on the Varsity P-asketball Squad, but both class teams Cfirst and secondj carried off the banners in the Inter-Class games. This year we assisted in the performance of an operetta, The Marriage of Nanettef' Our classmate, Eloise Muhlberg, proved herself very valuable in taking charge of the dancing. At this time we also added some of our members to the Vidette Staff, the GIGS Club, the Orchestra, and the Mandolin Club. E681 , Me df- The school year ended again. During the vacation that we now enjoyed We stored up some surplus strength for the strenuous Junior year. Upper Classn1en, how we loved the sound of those two words! One morning in the auditorium Mr. Peters announced that the class of 1929 would meet in Miss Probst's room for the purpose of organizing. This was our first introduction to our dear adviser, Miss Pro-bst. The election which made Mr. Hoover President of the United States was a mere trifle compared with our election of class officers Caccording to Ruth Kroegers opinionj. The following girls ,were duly elected: President, Betty Turner: Vice-President, B. Josephine Miller, Secretary- Treasurer, Mary Harbold, and Historian, A-my IIelm. Blue and gold were selected as colors. NVe again made our contributions to the various school societies. This time the faculty saw fit to elect B. Josephine Miller, Betty Turner, Mary Harbold, and Jane McGinnis to the National Honor Society. Th-e following is the equation for the production of a good Basketball team: Pauline Stager plus Jane McGinnis equals Gvood B. B. Team. Stinger was our star forward while Ginny used the Big Stick policy as center. Both girls received S'is'l for their work on the Team. The class in general had enjoyed .good health, but now disease poured fast. Kitty Kreider suffered fr-om an attack of the measles. QThis is a, child's disease, but never mind Kitty we consider thatj. Now our wit was beginning to be looked upon as uncommon. As Florence Peters walked up North Queen Street, a bootblack cried: 'tHey, Missl, Wanna shine? Flos replied, No, sonny, I'm quite satisfied to remain obscure. Other brilliant remarks were al-so made by different students but space prohibits their being stated here. When March 17, 1,928 arrived, we held our first class function that involved the other sex. It was in the form of a St. Patrick 's day party. QAll the Irish- men appeared in green, including Dickie Miller and Lib Leamanj. A few knee trousers and short socks made their appearance. fBlanche had a cold the next day due to the short socksj. Every one had a glorous time, especially the Committee ffl. Many love affairs, Cor should I say lasting friend- shipsffj were begun at this party. We were well on our way in the scientific field in spite of the fact that Betty VVarfel made our hair stand on end when she insisted upon playing with dan- gerous things in Chemistry class. Father Time moved on apace and we followed him. Our ambition was realized as we were 11ow Seniors. The following new officers were elected: President, B. Josephine Miller, Vice-President, Betty Turner: Secretary, Violet Vkfeberg and Treasurer, Kath- arine Boeninger. It was decided to pay fifteen cents per month as class dues. As we were now Seniors we needed a penman-ent Social Committee to reign supreme over the last two functions. The President appointed the following girls to serve on this Committee: Betty Turner, Chairman, Edna Lindsay, Williemac Clark, Betty Furlow, Mildred Stratton, Betty Banzhof, and Amy Ilelm. The Prom of December was a howling success. It rained kittens and puppies but, nevertheless, we ran short of cakes and ice cream because of the crowd. Some five hundred and fifty attended. Everyone had a fine time and was sorry when it ended. I may add that the high Seniors were green with envy. Another Honor Society election was held and the following gwirls were ad- mitted to its ranks: Mildred Alexander, Katharine Boeninger, Christina Bru- baker, Ellen Evans, Florence Peters, and Violet Weber. We now became high Seniors and received the mantle from our worthy predecessor, Mid-'29. A great responsibility was felt and we were eager to make our last ive months at Stevens High worth whiile. I69l -6-13ml an W- Our vocal talent which had been recognized before now made up the H Cream of the Cropll of the Glee Club. Although one of our class mates thought Michael Angelo was a great violinist, Miss Landgraf, nevertheless, admitted her to that musical Society. Again the Honor Society opened its doors to members of our class, namely, Grace Gehr, Anna M.cGlinn, Mary Louise McG'linn, and Rebekah Thorpe. The first prize of the annual D. A. R. Essay Contest was won by Mary Harbold, and the second prize by Arlene Senseniich. Tons of Money, a farce in three acts, was presented on May 3 and 4 in the Boys' High Auditorium. The girls from our class in the cast were B. J0- sephine Miller, Mildred Alexander, and Ellen Evans. All the actors Were espe- cially suited for their parts and interpreted them exceptionally Well. The girls from our class that served on the play committee were Lillayn Slotkin, Amy Helm, and B. Josephine Millerf Ex Oilicioj. Our class took a prominent part in the production of the Messiah, This was the first time that that great oratorio had been adapted for High School voices. The Whoopee Festival which was in charge of Betty Foh-l, Grace Gehr, and Kit Horner was very successful, both socially and financially. Our last social function was held in the form of a dance on June 21. In every way it was as good as, if not better than, the last prom We had held. There Was an exceptionally large crowd present. Now we, the class of 19219, are about to end our career with Class Day and Commencement. We have finished our Class History. VVhether our deeds have been noble it is not in our place to say. Time alone can tell. VVe leave our dear Alma Mater, Teachers, and Pals with heavy hearts as we launch our little ships on the great sea of life. Vale! Vale! Vale! AMY T. HELM, Historian. fi -E 5 V., ' E701 -hu es Boys' Class History Freshmen FTER nearly four years of pleasant comradeship and happiness for us, the class of 1929, the thought that we must leave comes with many regrets as we look back over the days spent in Lancaster Iligh School. Although all of us look forward to future things we shall always consider with much satis- faction the time spent here as very worth while and not to be forgotten. We entered these halls of learning in awe one day in February, 1926, a motely crowd of about 160 boys, hardly knowing where to go or what to do. Things were quickly straightened out for us in a very businesslike way and we were soon taught our place, especially by upper classmen. We were reminded that we were freshman so often that, while we dared not reply, we cherished a hope that some day someone would pay for all the free amusement afforded them at our expense. However, we soon began to take things seriously and our class was organized. Ted Brubaker was elected president, Austin McColl-ough, vice- president, and Russel VVatt, secretary. The student council was organized this year. It gives us some satisfaction in knowing that our class was the last to finish the eighth grade in a public school and the first to enter, as a whole, a junior high school for the ninth year. Also ours was the largest class that ever entered Ii. II. S. Sophomores NVe passed through our Freshman year safely and with no permanent in- juries reported, and the following September we bobbed up serenely as Sopho- mores. And Oh, our dignity and importance in our own eyes! I heard one of my classmates remark in a tone of triumph, 'WVell, now we have one class to look down upon, and I added, Why not tl1e other two as well? The case with which we diverted ourselves of the idea that we were Freshmen was truly remarkable. I doubt, the fact is I know, that it has never been so successfully done by any other class. VVe also began to show our originality in many other Ways. Our original Caesar translations threw our teachers into ecstacies of admiration-they always declared that they had received new light on many an old passage that year. As for the originals in Geometry, no one can say that our demonstrations thereof were not the newest discoveries of the age. During this term those elected as our class officers were Robert Warren, presidentg Ted Brubaker, vice-president, Irwin Rehim, secretary, and Austin McCollough, Vidette reporter. Harry Dunlap was elected to the student council. Those inclined to be famous mechanics, electricians, and draftsmen found their dream realized as the first co-operative course was offered. Many took advan- tage of it. There was a certain attraction in taking this course-it was neces- sary to study books only half the time. Juniors The next year rolled around and we began to feel important-we were now upper classmen, at least Mr. Gast said so. During the Junior year the class offi- cers were John Dotterer, President, Howard Bare, Vice President, Russell Vtfatt, Secretary, Ted Brubaker, Treasurer. Mr. Grube was our Class Adviser. .,,Qur class colors, blue and gold, and the shield emblem were selected this year. On the 17th of March a class party was held in the Girls' High Gym. Refreshments, games and dancing were enjoyed and many a shy fellow took his plunge that night. Many acquaintances were made that evening an-d some of them are still progressing. Those who served on the student council that year were Austin Mc- Gollough and Omar Nissley. U11 -if Seniors Then came the fourth year and we were Seniors. NVe occupied those covet- ed seats up in the center of the auditorium. All of us put forth our 'best effort in everything we did for We knew it was our last chance to do things for Lancas- ter High. For this final year the following officers were selected: President, Theodore Brubaker, Vice President, Charles Panmer, whose resignation was fol- lowed by the election of Paul H. Hershey to the same office, Secretary, Austin Mctlolloiighg Treasurer, Kenneth Tredway, Historian, Henry Hillard. Mr. Atchley was our class adviser and we owe him many thanks in appreciation of the man things he has done for us. ADD December 17, 1928, the first senior prom was held in the Boys' High Gym. As it was a success in every way and the cards, refreshments, and dancing were enjoyed by all, the social committee which handled the affair deserves a lot of credit. It consisted of Donovan Smith, Richard J. Andes, John Dottererg, Robert Beacham, Henry Hillard and Theodore Brubaker, ex-officio. In May, 1929, the senior play, Tons of Money, was present-ed by our class combined with the senior class of Mid-i3'0. The boys of our class who assisted in its production were: Joseph Thatcher, Kenneth Tredway, Paul Hershey, James Sullenberger, Frank Hennessy, William Guthrie and Theodore Brubaker. Mr. Atchley directed the entire play and deserves a great deal of credit for its success. Our class selected for its flower the yellow rose, and for its motto: Virtue Conquers All. The following boys of our class played on the varsity football squad: Joseph Gavan, Harry Dunlap, Charles Hauer, Fred Hauer, Ray G-aul, captain. Fred Hauer proved to be one of t-he greatest track sensations of the year. Class Day was a success for our class. A program consisting of musical and entertaining numbers was enjoyed very much by everyone. Our last prom held in June was a big success. And now as we are to be graduated as the class that has led all classes in scholarship and number, we therefore, the class of 1929, whose names are herein assemibled do in the name and by the good authority of the good faculty of this school, solemnly publish and declare that this class is and of right ought to be graduated with honors, as the best one that every has left or ever will leave these High Schools. For the support of this declaration with a sincere faith in the eternal and immutable friendship between the menrbers of our number, and with a firm re- liance on ourselves, we mutually pledge one to another, our fortune and reputa- tion, as scholars, and as athletes. Alas poor Yorick! 1 knew him, Horatiof' And then came the end of our high school career, Graduation. Our class boasts of being the largest class ever to graduate from Lancaster High School. Now as we look back over our high school days we can see what we have done that wasriivorth while and in all ways we have tried to uphold the standard of Lancas- ter igh School. May all the following classes strive to uphold and preserve its traditions as Me have tried to do. And thus, with a fond farewell, we part, Dear Old Alma ater. Gathered about the coach were the sport luminaries of the day. Timidly, one of the Freshmen inquired, May Freshmen go out for track'? . There was a deafening roar from the elite, but the Freshman received a favorable answer. That day rnarked the beginning of three years of athlenc service for Stevens High by the girls of 1929. The Freshmen took part in the track meet. Clur favorne sport fneedlessto sayj upon our return to schoolin the faH was that of tormenting the Freshmen. However, some few of us took an interest in tennis and hockey, but they were not for us. We knew too little about them. Basketball soon loomed upon the horizon. Tired of being in the background our class started to forge ahead. We knew as little about basketball as hockey, but that made no difference, as we were determined to learn. Jane McGinnis served as center on the Varsity. Our class teams surprised everyone by carrying off both banners. These teams were captained by Mary Harbold and Eva Lausch. Track again ! 0ur girls aided in the defeat of Shippen. 1929 was no longer a back number. Juniors! Tennis? Good. We were well represented. Hockey? Better! Jane McGinnis made the team. Basketball? Best! ! The Varsity Squad was composed of nearly all 1929 girls, among whom may be mentioned Ruth Kreider, Emma Miller, Mary Harbold, Ruth Kroeger, Elizaabeth Zahn, Pauline Staiger, and Jane McGinnis. Two, Pauline St-ager and Jane McGinnis, received berths on the Varsity t-eam and were awarded the first lS's given to the class. Nevertheless, our class team was sacrificed for the Varsity. The first team lost the banner, but the second, captained by Anna Ditzler, retained its laurels. VVith the first appearence of spring, the girls could be seen practicing for the annual track meet. Among these were Elizabeth Zahn, Ruth Kroeger, and Jane McGinnis. The track medal was won by Jane McGinnis, who totalled seventeen points Only one year to go! The leaders of the school! Surely we must prove it. Did we? Dorothy DeHaven was runner up in tennis. Edna Lindsay, Ruth Kroeger, and Jane McGinnis served on the Varsity Hockey team, the last men- tioned receiving her HS. The Senior team also won the Inter-Class tourna- rnent. The basket-ball squad was composed of the same girls as those who repre- sented the class in their Jiinior year, with one exception. Florence Peters joined us. Four made the regular varsity. They were Elizabeth Zahn, Ruth Kreider, Pauline Stager, and Jane McGinnis, the latter being elected captain. S's were awarded to Jane McGinnis and Pauline Stager. The Senior class team romped away with honors again. They were asbly captained by Ruth Kroeger, who had experience with the varsity. The athletes of 1929 are grateful to dear old Stevens High for the privilege of representing it. We relinquish our places to those coming on, all the while hoping that.they may uphold the records set by us. Follow the code of good sportsglanship no matter what the sacrifice may be. Play clean and you shall succee . E841 Boys' Sport Resume of 1929 As lowly sophs we entered L. H. S. with the fond but far fetched idea of doing wonders in the line of sports. Through this period we placed Wagner, Gaul, Gavan, Dunlap and Delp on the Jr. Varsity football squad and Gavan and Delp on the Jr. Varsity basketball squad. Then on becoming juniors we stepped out and decided to do big things. The result was that Gaul, Wagner, Gavan, and Dunlap landed berths on the Varsity football squad. ln basketball and track Delp, Dunlap, and Gavan upheld our colors. Then on becoming Seniors everyvbody joined forces and took L. H. S. sports strong- hold by storm. Fred and Charlie Hauer, XVagner, Gaul, Gavan, Dunlap proved their mettle on the gridiron, Gaul having been selected Captain, and Ted Brubaker, Gavan, Dunlap, and Delp helped Lancaster High put out one of the best basket- ball teams in the history of the school. In track Fred and Charlie Hauer, Hershey, and Gavan helped the team in its quest of honors. In golf we were glad to see Ted Brubaker and Bobll Beachman and Stan Fortncy upholding our standards on the links, Brubaker developing into one of the best ever listed on the school's records. On the clay oblong we watched with some pride the doings of the tennis team and noticed especially the fine work of Breneman and Reynolds, who did much to rank Lancaster High School among the best in this sport. The old and almost forgotten game of soccer was revived and it was sup- ported by many seniors who practiced diligently to givethis sport a more firm footing in the future. The Intra-Mural track team composed of seniors outclassed all competition to win in a neat senior fashion. Thus you see we have been well represented and we are proud of our boys who gave their best to help place Lancaster High on the pinacle she now holds. I371 -W- gg-as Retail Salesmanship ITH this issue of the Vidette Annual we recognize the graduation of the first group from the Retail Salesmanship or C0-operative Course of the Stevens High School. Thirteen girls of the 1929 class have com- pleted the full two years of work required in this course. Members of preceding classes have taken some of the work offered and are continuing in the work of retailing instores and schools. VVith each semester more girls have shown an interest in the course, proving its value and its right to a place in the curriculum of the school. In addition to the viewpoint of the girls there is that of the city merchants who seem to be much interested in the work and co-operating to the best of their ability. Much commendation has been given the memlbers of the course by the merchants who have employed them. If one is to judge by this, the course must meet a felt need in the community. During the school year 1926-1927 merchants of the city expressed a desire for employees trained for salesmanship prior to their employment in the store. Through the co-operation of the Federal Government under the Smith-Hughes Act and the merchants of the city, together with the school authorities, the course for the preparation of sales people was effected. With September of 11927, at the beginning of the school term, the course began with sixteen girls enrolled, some for the full two-year course, others for the remaining months of their high school work. The principles of retailing are taught, also a survey of the types of retailing stores. This does not limit the group to any one type of salesmanship, but pre- pares them for a wide range of work. The individuals, however, are given an opportunity to express their own tastes by the type of salesmanship they prefer, so that it is evident that personality and individuality are not ignored. NVith the graduation of this group from the Stevens High School vacancies may occur in the school for the newcomers in the course, many of the girls, how- ever, will continue in the same position now held or advance to more responsible ones, the merchants of the city, through the Chamber of Commerce, preparing to take care of the next group to take the course in school. s- 3, Y SL ISST fe -d- .
