MICKEY lVIcDANIEL Secretary to the Superintendent MR. J.E. DAWSON, Superintendent of Schools TO THE CLASS OF 1961: I am proud of you, and for each of you I wish a worthwhile and satisfying life for decades to come. If you wonder how much control you have over this life, I refer you to the answer given by novelist Boris Pasternak, when he was asked, Can a man control his future? Yes,,' he answered: I believe that men everywhere have more power over the future than ever before. The important thing is that we choose to exercise it. What we do today determines how the world shall go, for tomorrow is made up of the sum total of today's experiences. No one knows what the formula is, nor how slight a change may reshape the pattern to our heart's desire. Far from feeling hopeless or helpless, we must seize every opportunity, however small, to help the world around us toward peace, productivity, and human brotherhood? Every day brings choices: this calls for courage, but courage has genius, power, and magic in it. You are beginning with high ideals and courage: follow these ideals and exercise careful choices, and your control of your future will amaze you. Sincerely, J. E. Dawson 29 l 7 MR. W. W. ALFRED, Principal, Lancaster High School TO THE CLASS OF 1961: As you, the members of the Fifty-Sixth class to be graduated from Lancaster High School, go new into new and larger areas of living, whether they be homemaking, business, or further education, we assure you of our hopes that you will have lives successful in every way, and of our expectations that you will continue to be the fine people you have been in your years with us. We are proud of what you have done, and have high expectations of what you will do. To say what the future holds is impossible, for the dream of yesterday is the hope of today, and the reality of tomorrow. That your share in that tomorrow be great beyond your expectations and worthwhile to all with whom you come into contact is the sincere wish of the faculty and administration of Lancaster High School. Sincerely, 34. Jfk TO THE CLASS OF 1961 Though you may forget most of what we studied in the class hours that we spent together this year, there are seven words from Wordsworth that l hope you will remember: We live by Admiration, Hope, and Love. That which we admire, we grow to b-e likeg that which we hope for, we strive to achieveg and it is Hope for things better which grows into Faith in Things Unseen. We are shaped and fashioned by what we love: People, ideas, ideals. We control our own Present and Future as we select and admit into our hearts the ideas, ideals, and people whom we grow to loveg and as We work toward that which We admire and hope for. Yet when we manfully strive and feel that we fall short of our goals, remember with me the words by Stevenson, 'LTo travel hopefully is a better thing than to arrive, and the true success is to labor. Wherever you may be, may you be strengthened by the knowledge that you in turn strengthened us in Lancaster High by being people whom we could admire, hope much of, and certainly love. THE SPIRIT OF THE WORKER 4'When love and skill work together, expect a masterpiecef' -Ruskin Life is indeed darkness save when there is urge, And all urge is blind save when there is knowledge, And all knowledge is vain save when there is work, And all work is empty'save when there is loveg And when you work with love you bind yourself to yourself, and to one another, and to God. And what is it to work with love? It is to weave the cloth with threads drawn from your heart, even as if your beloved were to wear that cloth. It is to build a house with affection, even as if your beloved were to dwell in that house. It is to sow seeds with tenderness and reap the harvest with joy, even as if your beloved were to eat the fruit. It is to charge all things you fashion with a breath of your own spirit. - The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran. MR.
