You have come to the end of a road which at times must have seemed endless. You have grown from Childhood into young adulthood during a period of time when strife and distrust have become almost a way of life for mankind. You have been involved in a major restructuring of the educa- tional life of your age group-yet you have survived. As your principal, I have had the good fortune to come to know many of you personally and I am privileged to have been a small part of those times, both good and bad, that have made up your junior and senior years at Lancaster High School. I look forward to following your lives and careers and feel certain that we will be as proud of you during the next phase of your lives as we have been with that just completed. 35 r-w SECRETARIES. lst row-Katherine Anders, Viginia Hazelton, Aleen Hester, Sue Rodenbaugh, Mary Brooker, Grace Ray; 2nd row-Clara Ruth Moore, Eileen Blosser, Diane Dishon, Sally Ankrom, Ruth Thimmes. 36 w v ; ames BI'OWH Worth H arman Susan Klein john Watson Ruth Young Robert L. Sutton Superintendent Perspective, a visionary manifestation of considerable importance, begins with a broad base and transcends to a focal point-the future. Isoarus, of mythology fame, established his goal to flight toward the sum, but neglected to prepare him- self adequately. He did not research his equipment and as he flew too near the sun, his wings of wax melted and he fell to the earth. This fine school system has prepared you for your trip into the future. You must establish your own focal point, or goal. It is hoped that you have accomplished your research and are well prepared. It is our hope that we can bask just a little in the light of your accomplishments and claim a small bit of credit for helping you establish your perspective. Our best wishes go to you! r?! . Students will be en- couraged to Choose their own English program, one that will be suited to each studentts individual needs and interests. Over eighty subjects will be of- fered on topics ranging from composition to film- making, from ttThe Short Story to ttThe American Dream. Courses will range in length from nine weeks to a semester. Next year will bring non-grad- ing. Sophomores and freshmen will be eligible for the same Classes, as will juniors and seniors. Al- though there will inevitably be problems involved, the rewards for students who will finally be able to select the courses they are most interested in Will more than compensate for the headaches resulting from making such a choice available. v . -. 5.; v.5. Such as: the many, many nights we worked late to meet our deadlines tby the way, we missed all threeD and slaving away for hours on end in the Mirage room, existing on nothing but fresh ideas and stale Christ- mas candy. Probably the best thing we had going for us was the fact that we had each other. We fur- nished one another with a back to pat when things went well, and more often, a shoulder to cry on when things did not. We shared ideas, the blame for mistakes, and Hobo sandwiches at Grillils. We both know that neither of us could have made it without the other. A project of this size takes much more than a hard working staff. It involves the coopera- Wes Mirick Consultant tion and help of many persons. Because of this we feel that many thanks are in order: To our close friends-for putting up with a couple of girls who did nothing but eat, sleep, and live ttMirage,l for over seven months. To our families-who havent seen much of us this past year. To the staff-for enduring the confusion of working under two editors. To Mrs. Thimmes-for giving us the key every morn- ing, and to all the office personnel for putting up with us while we made complete pests of ourselves. To Mr. Moore-for having faith in and tolerance of us-and for finally turning in his write-up! And, Wes Mirick, for your undying enthusiasm and much needed support-to you goes our admiration, appre- ciation, respect, and much love. Most important are the things which Mirage has taught us, such aszTemperonce, the ttgive-a-little, take-a-little,l skill which we all must acquire not only to create a good book, but to live a good life; Endurance, the stick-to-it ness of starting a project and not quitting until it is finished which results in the great reward of seeing one,s ideas become reali- ties; and finally, the Importance of standing up for what one believes, which can be the hardest thing a person may have to do. In spite of all our gripes, editing this book has been an experience which we would not give up for the world. We can honestly say, though, in all sincerity, that we are glad its over. Y! I three language areas: French, Latin and Spanish. 1 The classical language over the years has proven it- self invaluable to those who are interested in his- tory, English, and some of the professions. Many former students remark, TI never really understood English until I took Latin. The objectives of Latin are comprehension of the written word, or translations, writing and the under- ; standing of an ancient culture with which we have many problems. 3 The modern languages and Classic languages have the same three objectives in common, but the mod- I ern languages have two additional objectives: oral I comprehension and speaking. These last two 00- ! cupy most of the studentsI work during the first two i years. 1 The Foreign Language Department hopes to re-es- tablish its offerings at the junior high level in the near future. Languages are more easily learned when children are more receptive to distinguishing and pronouncing new sounds. I t. J 5? FRENCH CLUB: lst row-M. Miller, I. Sted, R. Poulsen, K. Everhart; 2nd row-S. As such, it is an area Which is dynamiC-subject to innovation and change. It seeks as one of its primary goals the cultivation of free thought, free speech, open minds, and extensive communication. The interchange and flow of ideas and opinions among all participants in social stud- ies classes, based upon foundations of. extensive training and practice in cognitive skills and affec- tive attitudes, is intended as a means of developing compassionate, realistic, humanitarian citizens who will be desirous of sustaining civilization as a Viable and vital force promulgating creeds of law, justice, peace, and brotherhood throughout the city of man. As it becomes more obvious that the classroom textbook cannot give all the information essential for a well-rounded educational experience, teachers turn to the library and audio-visual departments more often. Our ex- panding, changing world has brought about new and signiiicant educational trends-one 0f the most signihcant being the need for independent study and research. The school library is the ttlearning laboratory, of the school. It provides material for varying needs, interest and abilities, and it encour- ages the student to pursue independent study at his own pace. The library provides help for the slow reader and challenges the gifted. Along with the audio-visual department, the purpose of the library is to serve both students and teachers at Lancaster High School. Books, magazines, newspapers, and pamphlets are provided in the library while films, iilmstrips, tapes and records are shelved in the audio-Visual room. 4...... ...... -Aw.-.-u . - V., m... 2..-... h -2.m..,.-....-.2-.. 4.. a HHHH o: NHPSDPDNQWPPNH Debbie Smith Valerie Smith Sharon Lansing Susan Gilcrist Kay Odle Teddy Roosevelt Donna Wooldridge Mrs. iWebster Cinda Herndon Debbie Johnson Kathryn Carrel Debbie Webb . Naturally we would like to make mathematics tthose that have the ability to add to the math al- ready discoveredi, out of all our students, but only a very few have the talent to accomplish this goal. Quite a few more will become competent enough in their use of math to use it as a tool in the sciences or to teach it at some level in education. Probably the majority of math students will spend their lives en- countering math in the form that it is applied in business. It is our goal to help all of these students to become more proficient at what ever level they are dealing with math. Because of its highly symbolic nature, math has be- come a powerful tool that can be used almost every- where. We would hope that those who study math would develop some appreciation for the power, precision, order and beauty of such a logical system of knowledge. - wank; Thomas McConkey, Willis Miller, Frank Westall. 61 Science The major goal of science education is to develop scientihcally literate and personally concerned indi- viduals with a high competence for rational thought and action. This choice of goals is based on the be- lief that achieving scientific literacy involves the de- velopment of attitudes, process skills, and concepts, necessary to meet the more general goals of all edu- cation, such as learning how to learn, how to attack new problems, how to acquire new knowledge, us- ing rational processes, building competence in basic skills, developing intellectual and vocational com- petence, exploring values in new experiences, un- derstanding concepts and generalizations, and learning to live harmoniously within the biosphere. 0 Top: Richard Clark, Richard Fenstermaker, Ioseph Gabel; Bottom: Curtis George, Daniel Iones, Charles Kessler. 62 Top: Terry Oehrtman, Richard Poiner; Bottom: Mary Jane Rising, Jim Wheeler. It is a course designed to teach, first, the background basics of the elements involved in flying. These would in- clude such topics as weather, navigation, aerodynamics, radio and com- munications, systems and instruments, federal air regulations and would generally encompass most of the information necessary to pass the writ- ten portion of the FAA Private Pilot written examination. Secondly, the course includes additional subjects such as the history of aviation and aerospace, an introduction to the science of missles and rockets and ca- reers in the aviation aerospace field. Outside activities of the course in- clude such activities as orientation flights in a light airplane, trips to such areas as Lockbourne Air Force Base, Port Columbus radar room, Flight Service Station and control tower, the Air Force Museum at Wright-Pat- terson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio, and a navigation flight, whereby the students are responsible for the proper navigation of a three-leg flight. The student receives one-half credit toward graduation, in science for the successful completion of the course. 67 Driver Educatmn .. m m a H m b 0 DH am H8 0k Iu ML t u; n. n.; E --.- Q.. 0-- .112 ..$:: . h .o 0' .m..... g. . .: . There are many programs available for the business student. For the freshman, General Business is offered. There is a course for Sopho- mores, Introduction to Vocational Business and Of- fice Education, that helps the student decide which of the three block programs interests him most. This course is a prerequisite to the following block bro- grams. The block programs are Clerk-Stenography I 8: 11, Clerk Typist I 8: II, and Account Clerk I 8: II. The first year of each program is at the 11th grade level, and the last year is for seniors. The Classroom for these courses are similar to real offices. The modern business laboratory is equipped with large, offioe-type desks, and the finest in office machines. For the student who wishes to learn some of the ba- sic skills of business, other courses are available. Personal Typing is given for the students who want to learn typing for their own use. Separate courses of Typing, Shorthand, and Bookkeeping are offered for the student who does not want to be in a block program, but who would like to learn these skills for their own use, or possibly for an office job in the future. i J; FBLA: Top Picture: first row-D. Vocational It is interesting to note that most students spend ap- proximately 13,000 hours in school from grades one through twelve. A vocational student spends only 1,600 of those hours in a specialized training that will prepare him to make his living. During the re- mainder of his life he will work, 80,000 hours at his trade. Some of our critics ask, ttHow can you be sure that the student Will not make the wrong decision and Choose the wrong vooation'xw Our answer is, ttOur high school students Will Choose the vocation to Which they are the most adept, with the help of our vocational quidanoe counselors. stYou can al- ways change a wrong decision, but what can you do with NO decision? Life is what you make it; work is the tool you use to shape it. lst row-William Brown, Joseph Burgoon, George Carr; 2nd row-Martha Cyrus, William Douglass, Donald F etters; 3rd row-Iames Iadwin, Martha Jones, Charlotte McNaughton; 4th row-Ray Mulrooney, Polk Saunders, Wanda Shaeffer. 75 76 Top: Carlton Sherrick, George Snead; Bottom: George Stokes, Richard Thimmes, Katherine Thrush; Not Pictured: Millie Miller. Industrial Arts The Industrial Arts is that part of the educational program which provides opportunities to explore, identify, and develop occupational and vocational interests through study and experiences of planning, experimentation, and construction; to better under- stand and appreciate our industrial culture; and to give practical application to other subject matter fields. Industrial Arts classes in Lancaster interpret five selected areas of our industrial community. The laboratories are well-equipped and staHed With qualified instructors who are all specialists in their teaching field. Approximately 600 boys are taking courses under the industrial arts program at Lancas- ter High School each year. The industrial arts pro- gram in Lancaster offers great opportunities, and students should consider carefully its contribution to their occupational or college plans. Students have the opportunity to explore the areas of woods, met- als, drafting, electricity-electronics, and power me- chanics when they elect the 9th grade program. When they become sophomores, juniors, and sen- iors they have the opportunity to elect work that leads to careers and further training in woods, met- als, 0r drafting. The art department is comprised of Introduction to Art, Art Design, Ceramics, Fine Arts, and Com- mercial Art. Each of these areas covers a general course of in- struction with emphasis upon stu- dent experimentation. The goals of the art department cover a wide range. Some of the most im- portant goals are acquainting stu- dents with the basic language of art, offering students a variety of fields, directing the emphasis of their art study, and helping stu- dents develop an enriched envi- ronment of media and materials. After completing the courses of- fered in art, the student will be better prepared to understand the world of art which surrounds him. The Art departmentoffers the student a key to the future and provides him with the imple- ments for discovering his identity. 115 i z z z z z a, z z z1 z C, l l Iz,z II I IIl l l lI l l x 7xrkx x xl K x x x Ci: 5 r V11 116 117 ?. 2, l; y; 7 H . This year has been a very successful one for the Marching tFBand of Gold? Besides per- forming at all LHS football games, it was also in- vited to play at the Cleveland Browns Game. It re- cently won first place at West Jefferson, Ohio in competition with the Canadian Champs. The Sym- phonic and the Cadet Bands each performed three concerts during the school year. The Orchestra also had many public appearances. The Swinging Gales, a small selective group of band members, performed for twenty five dances and charity groups. The vocal music program includes the Freshman and Soph- omore Choruses which perform four times a year, and the A Cappella Choir which gives five concerts. The A Cappella Choir participated with the Band of Gold in a combined half-time show during the foot- ball season. The Singing Gales, a group of twenty selected from the A Cappella Choir, has sung for many Civic groups during the year. There is also an annlml Singing-Swinging Gale Concert each spring. Q U R Q 'U C U m 131 134 PH YS I CAL Supervisor Richard England Health And Phys- ical Education Physical education is that area of education which deals with the body in action or in movement, and it contributes to the complete education of the indi- vidual through large-muscle activities and the asso- ciated knowledge, attitude, and appreciation. Physical activity has potential values in personality and social growth. Students seek out others who play well. Frequently the ones with good play skills are the popular students, the ones chosen as leaders, the ones others want to sit beside. In the matter of safety, the ability to manage one,s movements capably is a protection against the many hazards of daily life. If the proper coordination is learned during childhood then work involving lift- ing, climbing, carrying, reaching and judging the speed of moving objects is performed more proficiently. There is a difference between physical activity and physical fitness. Some physical fitness is needed to enjoy participating in games. Skills are necessary. There are three reason for being physically fit: Fit- ness helps one enjoy physical activity; a physically fit person will learn more rapidly and effectively; and fitness enhances excellence in performing on the gym floor or on the field. Life is Godk most precious gift. 283 t t t t 'E E 3' 284 The family of LHS wishes to salute Mr. tiloei, Gabel, who has retired after 30 years of instruction. Mr. Gabel, who coined the phrases ttfiddlesticksr, and iibalderdashf, and often Challenged his pupils with ttWhere have you been all your lives?,, made his classes exciting and interesting even to those who were not particularly fond of science. A day of school was proclaimed ttIoe Gabel Dayh and he was honored with a cake and an American Beech tree which was planted in his name in the Arboretum. Many old friends and grateful students wished him well and realized that they were saying goodbye not only to a good teacher but to a great man as well. Over 100 students met in the High School cafeteria at the height of the Holiday Sea- son, December 28, 1971 for the first gather- ing of the graduates, staff and parents for an evening of sharing experiences and re- newing friendships. Festive decorations and beautifully appointed tables ladened with tea sandwiches and punch were pre- pared by the Cemmittee for the enjoyment of all. Hopefully this will be an annual event which students will want to come back to. This occasion will help the par- ents and teachers understand the gradu- atesl feelings of how their school and learning experiences helped 0r hindered them in the very beginning of their adult lives. The fruits from this kind of open ex- change of attitudes and tlfirst handii infor- mation will be an important part in the constant move to keep Lancaster Schools superior. 293 294 SENIORS!!!
