The faculty has tripled in number as well as the student body. However, the more dramatic changes have been those cov- ering the social and political aspects of education. Priorities on course content as well as learning processes have presented toda s faculty with great challenges. Lancaster has always been fortunate to have many great teachers on its faculty. The present faculty has met the challenges of today by adapting itself to this rapidly changing world. jU MpJl I am proud to have been a member of this faculty for so many years. 38 Virginia Benson Susan Bernard Janice Booth Joyce Booth William Brown Joseph Burgoon Warren Buskirk Sara Carmany 39 Joan Crumley Martha Cyrus David Dill William Douglas L 40 - 1 V Richard Fenstermaker Donald Fetters James Fey Ceorge Finnen Marilyn Finnen Virginia Fetters Ruth Fraker Kenneth Freeman David Cluni John Goller Jacque Cray Robert Hamm Ruby Hanson Worth Harmon Golda Hedges Daniel Jones James Jadwin Myrna Hieke Mary Hoey Richard Hazelton 44 1 Charles Kessler Roger King Sue Belle Lillick James Lukasko 45 4 Wilma Marlin Robert McCauley Thomas McConkey Flora McCurdy 44 r Charlotte McNaughton Willis Miller Ray Mulrooney Margaret Oakey David Rainford Robert Real! But by the end of the year they had united to form one class with true spirit and the determination to get work done. The first step in that direction was the freshman carwash. Of the 75 who gave their time, not one left dry, or disappointed with the results. The so-called underdog class also proved themselves at homecoming by encouraging hundreds of voters to “Keep Our Schools Afloat. The class showed even more responsibility by sponsoring many projects in order to attend the January assembly. By working together the class of '74 achieved its goals and was rewarded with a well-deserved semi-formal prom. We, also new, found trying to help the freshmen a true test of pa- tience. Meeting new friends, joining clubs, and attend- ing sports events showed us that high school is more than merely being in classes. The athletic ability in high school was deep and very competitive. However, the determination of every sophomore team was backed by a powerful force called school spirit. To prove that the sophomore class is where it's at we built the winning Homecoming float, Put a Tiger in your Gale”. Our scholastic ability stood out when we placed many students on the honor roll. The sophomores would like to thank all the people who helped in class projects and especially our class advisors, Mrs. Alspach and Mr. Wheeler. After a summer of rest and fun, we will return as a leading junior class. 76 Pete Stokes Vice-president Dana Fox Secretary Debbie Bay Treasurer Bill Abram Teresa Abrams Steve Adams Cheryl Adkins Ken Aller Richard Alexander Bernadette Alonso Joe Amato Mary Anderson Raymond Anderson Susan Anderson Jim Andres Nancy Apperson Wendell Arledge Beverlee Ash Bill Ashton Sue Aurand Carrie Azbell Charles Babcock Dave Bailey Kim Bailey Mary Jane Bailey Mike Bailey Peggy Bailey Diane Baker Cary Baker Sandy Baker lean Ball Lisa Barber Don Barringer Greg Barry Bill Baughman Jane Baughman Anne Bauman Dan Bay Debbi Bay Joyce Behrens Kathy Bennett Mike Burnside Penny Biggs Greg Bitler Kathy Black Fred Blank Beth Blankenship Jeff Boch Joyce Boch Stan Boch Ken Boetcher Merri Bope Vickie Bope Kim Boris Connie Bowersock Dale Bowman Randy Boyd Norman Boyer Steve Boyer Mary Alice Brand Gary Brenstuhl Rick Bressler Greg Briggs Dave Brooks Terry Brown Vickie Brown 77 Above: Barb Friesner, stop right there! This enabled the Class of 1972 to get off to a good start—they took sec- ond place with their unique Homecoming float entitled One Small Step for a Gale, One Giant Leap Towards the COL , and contrib- uted to a successful levy campaign with a full page ad in the Eagle Gazette. A Valentine's Car Rally added excitement to the usual mid-year doldrums. The highlight of the year was the Prom, held in May. It was a fitting finale to a profitable and enjoyable year— one which will indeed send the juniors on to a rewarding and suc- cessful senior year. Our class has had the distinct privilege of working with two fine administrators, Mr. Fred Lowry and Mr. Jack Moore. The Class of 1971 has achieved much in the line of com- munity service. The team is aided by a native in- terpreter. A spit-and-polish colo- nel and a victimized captain en- counter many difficulties with the natives. Only the interpreter, Sakini, can straighten things out. “This is the story of a common flower girl who was transfigured to a lady of high society with the help of Professor Higgins, a renowned speech instructor. Coach Farmer was extremely pleased with the consistent performance of Senior Pat Powers. Other standouts were seniors Steve Romine and Tim Hall, whose fine showings were at times overshadowed by either the play of Pat or team defeat. Farmer's nine got to the finals of the Sectional Tournament, where Sheridan upended them and brought their season to a close. Although many underclassmen will be returning next year, they will have some large holes to fill, particularly at the critical spot of pitcher, where only Tener and Boyer will be returning. Although many season matches were cancelled because of poor weather, the Gales finished with a 6-4 winning season, losing only to State Champs Upper Arlington and state ranked Whetstone and Columbus Academy. Returning lettermen Ticknor and Oetjen made fine showings in the COL match, while Ham- mond and Essman went to the 3rd round of the District, the farthest yet for any Lancaster players. The doubles team of Akin and Hester completed the school's most successful in- dividual season record, and although both are seniors, next year's team should be very strong. 212 213 4 Varsity Track Team—Row 1—D. Gales Have Superb Season Lancaster's 1970 track team proved to be the best in the history of LHS. Our Cales tickled Coach Hamm by defeating arch- rival Upper Arlington in a dual meet. This was U.A s first dual or triangular meet loss in 6 years and 35 wins. The team was upset with its fine 2nd place showing in the COL meet because the coaches and runners felt that they could have again whipped U.A. However, in- stead of letting this meet disturb them, the Cales bounced back to capture both the Fulton Relays Crown and their 7th consecutive District Title. Lancaster had three district winners: Wittman, in the shot put; Cole, in the low hurdles, and the phenomenal Bill Beaty in the mile and Vi mile Bill followed this perform- ance by becoming only the 2nd runner in the history of this school to win a state track event, the mile run. The 1970 L.H.S. football team proved to be unquestionably the best team Lancaster has ever produced. Under the superb guidance of Head Coach Earl Jones and his staff, our Gales scrapped their way to a won-lost record of 8-1-1, and an ultimate state ranking of 6th. A total of three points kept the Gales from an undefeated season and a possible state ranking of 1st. Only Springfield South and arch-rival Upper Arlington managed to give the Gales a contest. Springfield came away with a tie as injuries popped up which crippled the Gales. Then, before an estimated crowd of 11,000 or more, Lancaster fell to undefeated Upper Ar- lington by a single point for its only loss. The bitter defeat also caused the Gales to take 2nd place in the C.O.L. So many players were standouts on the team that it is senseless to attempt to list them in this small area. In fact, many excellent players were not even starters because excellent was simply common-place on the team. Next year's Juniors and Seniors will have to work extreme- ly hard in order to fill the gaping holes left by this year's strong contingent of Seniors. An ex- tremely young team, comprised mostly of Sophomores and Juniors, fought its way into what has already become an L.H.S. tradition in cross-country: winning. Senior Co-captains Scott Hammond and Dave Morehead pro- vided the necessary leadership for a great team, while Juniors Nathan Bush, Mark Welker, and Larry (Shrub) Bush repeatedly led the Gales in competition. The team early in the season became determined to win the Dis- trict and go on to the State, and nothing stopped them. The Gales wound up their ex- citing season with a final rating of 19th in the State. VARSITY CROSSCOUNTRY—ROW ONE — M. Welker, B. Barber, S. Hammond, R. Gust, J. Campbell, M. Messcrly, R. Ticknor. N. Re.ill 229 I Young Gales Retain Spirit And Enthusiasm Lancaster High School's basketball team fought its way through a difficult and ultimately disappointing season. Many individual standout performances, however, were visible from game to game. The sparkling ball handling of guard Brian Arledgc com- bined with the deft shooting of Powers and Miller and steady play of Boyer, gave the Gales a formid- able weapon against teams which did not hold too much of a height advantage. In many games the Gales found themselves just too small to get their share of rebounds. Two outstanding games, the near upset of State ranked Zanesville, and the upset of Columbus Whitehall, gave the smaller Gales a glimmer of hope for the post-season tournament. Jackson, however, snuffed out the Gales' hopes in the first game of the sectional tournament, held at Rio Grande College. Even so, the young Gales have much to look forward to next year. Vandenoever managed to set five school records, and after a fine District showing placed 8th and 10th in the State 50 yd. and 100 yd. Freestyle. Swim Team Gains State Recognition The 1971 Swim Team, under the coaching of Dennis Neff, swam its way to a 6-4-1 won-lost record. Co-Captains Rick Ryman and Dave Van Gundy provided the leadership necessary for a winning team, while Chris Somers and State-rated Chris Vandenoever repeatedly lead the way in the pool. Throughout the year Lancaster swam against some of the stiffest competition in the state, which makes only the second winning swim season for LHS even more gratifying.. Next year's team with its fine crop of underclassmen has much to look for- ward to. VARSITY SWIM TEAM—ROW ONE—D. Vangundy, C. Vandenoever, Coach Neff, C. Claigg. N. Boyer, B. Hajost, B. Somers, M. Hockey is a rela- tively new sport at Lan- caster, but is steadily gaining support and recog- nition. This year's team was ably coached by Mrs. Baughman, Miss Kubach and a different captain chosen each week. The girls' voted Karen George “Most Valuable Player.” The team, consisting mainly of juniors, hopes to better this year's record next fall. First Row; J. Crossen, C. Christian, K. Blackford, P. This year's Girls' Basketball Team, with many problems to overcome, has stayed together solely from en- joyment of the game. A new rule prevented the girls from playing in the league, because of their malt coach, Paul Lynn. The team, ad- vised by Miss Waldvogle, played scrimmages with sev- eral surrounding schools to acquire skill and confidence, whi(h gives promise of an exciting season next ear. 245 SENIOR G.A.A. These girls not only cheered the Gales to victory in the big sports, but also diligently supported those sports which are often ig- nored by the average spectator. The walls of L.H.S. were kept cov- ered with signs which boosted the morale of not only the athletes, but of the students, faculty, and administration as well. Perhaps the Cheerleading Squad was never a factor in the outcome of any of the sporting contests, but as one looks back over the year, he soon real- izes that ultimately it is not the outcome that is important, but the type of sportmanship ably demonstrated by our cheerleaders that is truly significant. 249 p 250 a RESERVE CHEERLEADERS—Front—A.
