Lowry -- Principal To compile an accurate word and picture account of the interesting and challenging events of the school year is the primary pur- pose of our yearbook, the Mirage. This year, as in past years, the Mirage has recorded for our students their way-of-life at Lancaster High School. This is the history of the fun you have had, of the work you have done, of your ac- complishments in co-curricular activities, of the moments of exhilaration and, yes, of a few heartaches as you have progressed through L.H.S. 35 The fact may not occur to you presently but your Mirage, the chronicle of your Senior High years, will bring you great delight and certainly a little poignant shock of nostalgia as you look back through your 1970 annual in the years to come. You will be able to spend a few minutes in memory with old friends and familiar places. May I congratulate you upon the completion of your high school studies and wish for you all happiness and success in whatever your post high school plans encompass. Sheely - Superintendent To every graduating senior, I extend my con- gratulations and wish you to continue success in the future. For all of the students at Lancaster High School, my hope is for you always to aspire toward higher goals. Each and every one of us must aspire to be the best person we can possi- bly be. We, also, must aspire to achieve excel- lence in whatever tasks we perform. Most of all we must aspire to do the best we can for our fellow mankind. The challenges confronting you are great and will be even greater in this rapidly chang- ing world. The challenges focus primarily on resolving the social ills now confronting our socnety. I believe in the ability of this generation of teenagers to solve these problems. The social crisis of today will be removed through the endeavors of students such as you rselves. Today's problems cannot be resolved by looking into a rear view mirror, nor can today's problems be solved with yesterday's solutions. Even with our best efforts the land of tomor- row will not be one of milk and honey; but it can be a much better world through your hard work and your aspiring to adapt yourselves more easily to this changing world. Let us all look to the 70's with optimism where positive constructive action will be un- dertaken at greater speed and will be even more far reaching. As you young people move toward adult- hood, I believe, that you individually and collectively will be the vehicle for continued progress. We all, then, may continue to aspire to greater and better things for all mankind. Zia? Faculty The make-up of the Lancaster High School Faculty has changed perceptibly during the past decade. Where as, we were a relatively small faculty of long established Lancaster resident-teachers in 1960, we now find our faculty to be a blend of mature experience and enthusiastic youth. The world of 1970 may no longer be considered as the static orb which many of us once knew. We are faced with a dynamic world of many rapidly changing facets. As a consequence, the exposure to only one major philosophy is no longer adequate for our youth. They must be exposed to as many dif- ferent political, ethical, and economic points of view as possible. I feel the faculty of Lancaster High School is doing this job quite adequately, and I am proud to be associated with this fine group of professionals. j Mg; 4, Gregory Alspach Gary Bailes Dempsey Bailey Lee Barr . I Dave Morehead ine, Scott Hammond, Mike Friesner, R It is with great pride and pleasure that the Mi- rage staff presents to you the 1970 Mirage. , With the turn of the decade, the world has real- ized many advancements and accomplishments in numerous fields throughout the sixties, and has set a new precedent for the seventies. In keeping with the times, it was our desire to explore new techniques in journalism to better portray life at L.H.S. in 1970. It was indeed Challenging to deter- mine a more realistic and expressive way to depict our school's atmosphere. With such a wide range of sophisticated and creative ideas to choose from, the staff's selection has been thoughtful and moderate. We hope to have constructed for you a meaningful remembrance of Lancaster High School,1969--1970. Prac- tice, dedication, and determination showed that the Gales were not affected by their rec- ord. Lancaster's tough schedule was exempli- fied by their strong competition in the COL, where they faced State Champ Upper Arling- ton, and highly rated Zanesville and Newark. Such non-league teams as Columbus Watter- son and Springfield South added more stiff competition to the already tough gridiron schedule. Individual performaces in the back- field and line gave incentive to the Gales to fight as a team. The one-two combination of Huston and Jewell sparked one of the lightest lines in the league. Backfield standouts such as John Cook, Joe DeFillippo, Marc Bailey, and Rick Alspach exploded in almost every game. Many other individuals showed great talent and gave the team high morale. All season long the inexperienced and outsized Gales demon- strated great courage and dedication. 1 tyllurlnuiltl il'lllllll .r . 34:35, . . 1 CROSS COUNTRY - VARSITY 1st ROW - E. Miller, G. The Gales, playing for the last season un- der Coach England, pulled through with a 15-8 record with nine starts canceled because of rain. The Gales were victorious in the COL, taking the tournament win from Newark in a thrilling extra inning ball game. The boys were sailing along in the sectional with two wins against Hillbro and Greenfield McClain when the Tigers from Miami Trace dealt the Golden Gales a heavy blow. The Gales had a rough go at pitching that day and watched the Tigers walk off with their state hope and a 7-1 win. 115 TEAM STATISTICS Central Ohio League Champs Leading Hitter - Pat Powers Leading Pitcher Jim Callahan Rod Miller Team Batting Avg. The squad's only senior was captain Wayne Bosserman, who led the team to a five-seven sea- son. Although the Gales had trouble in the tough COL competition, their out of league play brought them firm victo- ries over Walnut Ridge, Logan, and Groverport. Although Lancaster did not gain victories in the Granville and Academy meet, the young Gales were given a chance for real competition. Sophomore Ralph Ticknor added a lot of spark to the team, totaling a 7-7 rec- ord, gaining nine team points and earning a hard fought second in the COL. Other tOp scorers were Tom Essman with eight; and Mike Evans and and Jeff Oetjen each scored seven. These three boys copped third place in the COL. Gale Golf Team Highly Successful Under Coach Spark's last year of guidance as golf coach, and Senior Steve Grove's fine lead- ership and play, the LHS golf team engineered a great season mark of 21-4. Their post season play was just as stunning. The Iinksmen from Lancaster High won the District Golf Champi- onship and placed 10th in the state meet. Steve Groves, undoubtably the finest golfer LHS ever had, won the district and placed third overall in the state. Eight school records were broken, and one of them, the Distance Medley, was an AII-time-Ohio Record . Lancaster also produced five district winners who captured their titles in Lancaster's sixth straight Dis- trict Title. Three winners, Gary Graf in the Mile-Run, Bruce Nickerson in the Pole Vault, and Bill Beaty in the Two-Mile, all went on to obtain state recogni- tion. Their first accomplish- ment was to construct the winning homecoming float, Leave 'Em in Our Tracks. The hard working class participated in other worthwhile projects. The Christmas food collection was one not- able success. Scholastically the versatile Juniors possessed high ambitions and achieved important academic goals. The enthusias- tic class participated in athletics, clubs, and other school activities throughout the year. With its fiery spirit the class won the victory headhunt sign again and again because of its earthshaking battle cry. Perhaps the highlight of the year was the enchanting Junior Prom which many will never forget. At the close of the school year in June, the class of '71 will look forward to a most outstand- ing Senior year. 157 Paul Abbot Tom Acton Kathy Adkins Susan Alten Ken Alvis Deborah Anderson Donald Anderson Michael Anderson Nancy Anderson Patti Anderson Judith Andres Larry Aneshansley Steve Ankrom Beverly Appleman Gary Arnold Frank Arter Charlene Azbell Susan Azzano Jane Babbitt Julie Babbitt Richard Babcock Rick Bagby Linda Bailey Tom Bailey Debby Ballinger Jane Balser Becky Banfield Bruce Barber Pam Baker Franklin Barker Joe Barker Andrew Barton Dennis Bash Susan Bash David Bauman Robert Baumgardt Jo Ann Beavers Joseph Beavers Kathy Beavers Paul Beavers Bob Beck Jay Beck Shelly Yenrick and Anita Sells take a quick rest break during float building. John Hayman practices his skit in front of the class. David Epstein Richard Alspauch Susan Myers Robert Gamble President Vice-President Secretary Treasurer Seniors How appropriate that our Senior Class of 1970 is the first graduating class of the new decade! We have been both a backward and forward looking class, respecting and enjoying the time-honored traditions of the '60's while establishing new precedents for future graduating classes of the '70's. Participating as a group in the traditional class activities and cooperating together in the various fund- raising projects have united us and provided us with good times together. Our class float, On for a Victory , served as a gathering place for us seniors, a center where we met to talk and have fun. At the Senior Prom LHS couples spent an enchanting evening as chivlrous knights and exhalted ladies in the dream-world of Camelot . We worked many long, hard hours to stage successfully the difficult but highly challenging play, INHERIT THE WIND, which was enthusiastically received by the citizens of Lancaster through a multiple-night showing. The Class excelled scholastically as well, with nine mem- bers named Merit semifinalists and nine with a letter of commendation, many more than in previous years. But the Class of '70 was not satisfied merely to follow in the footsteps of its predecessors. Reflecting the mood and trends of the times, we'felt a troubling social conscience prodding us to become involved in community and world issues. Our first project was a fund-raising drive for the United Appeal. Later, we collected old clothes and sent them to underclothed people overseas. One spring day we proclaimed Political Action Day on which we wrote letters to our political leaders on the issues of the day. The legacy of the Class of '70 is two-fold: it is the precedents of being socially and politically concerned as a class and performing worthwhile projects for the community; and it is the concern in ourselves about the political and social conditions in which we live, in a word, the desire to become active and responsible citizens of the world into which we are about to enter. 176 -...,4.,1.......mnv.i - 44-: y.- w--...v.. Brothers and sisters, I come to you on the wings of the Word. I am' not in the least interested in the pagan hypotheses of that Mr. ChlefJustIce, Citizens Of these United States; bookV' You're gonna need a room. Mr. Matthew Harrison Brady, this municipality is proud to have within its city limits the warrior who has always fought for us ordinary people. Hello devil, welcome to Hell. No! No, Father, Don't pray to destroy Bert! Do you solemnly swear to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth so help you God? The Senior Class of 1970 presents Inherit the Wind by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee Inherit the Wind has its basis in the famous monkey trials which took place in Dayton, Tennessee during the month of July of 1925. The play is not a history; it has di- mensions and meaning of its own. The stage directions set the time as Not too long ago. It might have been yester- day. It could be tomorrow.
