Clearly, beyond doubt, the problems facing the youth of the nation are, in 1968, the most serious in the 179 years of United States History. The issues can be identified and defined by simply looking about you and by being alert to the daily reports of the various communications media. The question is, of course, can you, the upcoming generation, meet the challenge; will you allow America to “go down the drain” or will you, through determination, stability, knowledge, understanding and humanity, stem the tide of destruction of this great nation? We have had tragedies in the deaths of our own boys in Viet Nam and we cannot, in good conscience, permit ourselves to compromise with the Communists and thus “write off’ the supreme sacrifice of your friends and our boys. What is more, your generation must see to the reestablishment of respect for reasonable and just laws and safety in our cities and rural areas. You cannot, as the great surge of “new voters”, sit idly by and watch apathetically the destruction of property and the continual rise in crimes of all descriptions. You have the task, of finding, in your generation, leadership of vision, integrity and ability. Somewhere in your generation there must be young Americans who approach the Washington, Jefferson, Webster and Theodore Roosevelt tradition. Yes, and have the qualities of “Old Hickory who commanded his battery officers at New Orleans to, “Elevate them guns down a little”. There have been many of the senior’s activities that I have missed this year; needless to say that I am sorry that this situation had to obtain. My greatest wish for you is that each and every graduate of 1968 has a full and satisfying life in whatever he or she chooses to do. Fred W. Lowry Principal Special days call for celebration. T ancaster High School has reason to be proud of the highly trained men and women who comprise its faculty. In addition to the principal, there are 78 instructors, five guidance and counseling personnel, two supervisors, and one librarian. These individuals are involved in 129 different units of instruction within 27 subject areas. Exclusive of study halls and supervision, each day approximately 459 classes are taught. Among the present faculty there is a combined total of 861.5 years of experience in classroom instruction.
