In the Mardi Gras Parade, Debbie Koon, Milt Taylor and Jeff Maxficld exemplify the spirit of the Senior class. SPIRIT Page Four During a pep rally, Greg Montague makes an earnest appeal to the student body for support for the basketball team. Christmas dance, Nancy Fairchild and Bob Sheets await the coronation of the queen. When his friends express their true sentiments toward him, Steve Messerly becomes “all choked up.” The enchanting Senior Prom provided memorable moments for Debbie Koon and Milt Taylor. Fun and frolic are evident at this pep rally. Page Six Laboratory experiments give students a first-hand knowledge of chemical action. Portraying his part well, Robert Russell gives an original dramatic reading, “Let My People Go.” Page Seven WORLD INTEREST Sponsored by the Lancaster City Forum, the well-known news commentator, Paul Harvey, discusses “Current Events” before a capacity crowd. At a senior assembly. General Curtis LcMay expresses his views on the Viet Nam crisis. Hosted by the Lancaster Campus of Ohio University, the distinguished Barry Goldwatcr, former presidential candidate, speaks at Lancaster High. The honorable James A. Stuart Director of Administrative Services Page Twelve V ith the passage of each succeeding V year the urgency and impact of the world situation becomes more and more pronounced. These ramifications are now being felt most definitely and decidedly in our nation here at home. Never has a generation been faced with a more critical challenge. It is a generation which will be looked to for answers and for directions. It seems to appear that these challenges become more critical by the hour and answers and solutions must be found. The educational opportunities afforded each and everyone in this school system have been designed to lay the foundations for a strong and fortified citizenry. It is always a concern that the students leaving these halls of learning today have acquired the basic concepts necessary to grow in wisdom and stature. The youth of our nation has always provided the best in leadership and solutions and there should be no question that this will again, in fact, be true. At the 1967 commencement Mr. Brown challenged the graduates to find places of service in a complex society. LHS baseball fans. Mrs. Sally McCarthy, Vocational; Mrs. Ruth Thimmcs, Record Clerk; Mrs. Eileen Blosscr, Student Office; Mrs. Katherine Anders, Financial Clerk. Page Fourteen Clearly, beyond doubt, the problems facing the youth of the nation are, in 1968, the most serious in the 179 years of United States History. The issues can be identified and defined by simply looking about you and by being alert to the daily reports of the various communications media. The question is, of course, can you, the upcoming generation, meet the challenge; will you allow America to “go down the drain” or will you, through determination, stability, knowledge, understanding and humanity, stem the tide of destruction of this great nation? We have had tragedies in the deaths of our own boys in Viet Nam and we cannot, in good conscience, permit ourselves to compromise with the Communists and thus “write off’ the supreme sacrifice of your friends and our boys. What is more, your generation must see to the reestablishment of respect for reasonable and just laws and safety in our cities and rural areas. You cannot, as the great surge of “new voters”, sit idly by and watch apathetically the destruction of property and the continual rise in crimes of all descriptions. You have the task, of finding, in your generation, leadership of vision, integrity and ability. Somewhere in your generation there must be young Americans who approach the Washington, Jefferson, Webster and Theodore Roosevelt tradition. Yes, and have the qualities of “Old Hickory who commanded his battery officers at New Orleans to, “Elevate them guns down a little”. There have been many of the senior’s activities that I have missed this year; needless to say that I am sorry that this situation had to obtain. My greatest wish for you is that each and every graduate of 1968 has a full and satisfying life in whatever he or she chooses to do. Fred W. Lowry Principal Special days call for celebration. Mr. Lowry and band students enjoy wishing Mr. Teachout a happy birthday. Lending his support to the basketball team, Mr. Lowry listens as Frank Kluz speaks at a pep session. Page Fifteen T ancaster High School has reason to be proud of the highly trained men and women who comprise its faculty. In addition to the principal, there are 78 instructors, five guidance and counseling personnel, two supervisors, and one librarian. These individuals are involved in 129 different units of instruction within 27 subject areas. Exclusive of study halls and supervision, each day approximately 459 classes are taught. Among the present faculty there is a combined total of 861.5 years of experience in classroom instruction. Day by day this staff utilizes its various abilities, diversified training, and wide experience in teaching the more than 1,600 students enrolled in the high school. Carl E. Ackley B.S. Ed., M.A. Ed. Together, the classes grew and matured as competitors and as friends. They began to utilize the vast opportunities offered them while they were learning, achieving, and preparing for the challenges of tomorrow. Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors alike developed pride in maintaining traditions of the school. Maturity, friendship, knowledge, and pride-these were the elements which combined to procure greater achievements in all phases of academic life. The staff, therefore, presents the 1968 Mirage with the hope that it has recorded accurately the experiences of the school year. It is our desire that the knowledge attained by the student body will also lead it toward the goal of “Reaching New Heights.” Sara Erakcr, Maribcth Munchmeycr, Kathy Grimm, Rae Ellyn Henderley, Jill Markwood, Linda Seeley, Beth Burnett Judd Liggett, Mike Crumley, Tim Doran, Steve Messerly, Charles Shafer. The language laboratory at Lancaster was designed to be very versatile and to provide a wide variety of programs. It was fitted with the best equipment available. The objectives of the laboratory are many. For modern language students it is used to listen to native speakers and to drill with them in grammatical and conversational situations. For classical language students its purpose is to drill grammatical structures. Each student is provided with his own set of equipment. As a result, he can practice pronunciation and grammatical forms one hundred per cent of the time rather than a small portion of it as in a regular classroom situation. The teacher is also free to supervise those students who need extra help while the rest of the class continues its work. Dynamic spirit coupled with conscientious feeling were key notes in every sport in 1968. The job of guiding and shaping these sentiments into organized and individual efforts fell upon the shoulders of eleven dedicated men, the coaches. Lancaster High School is privileged and proud to have one of the finest coaching staffs in Ohio. Proof of their abilities can be found in the fine records compiled by the teams. Page Sixty-eight FOOTBALL 1967 Dick Christian and Keith Arent take a well deserved rest on the sidelines. November 10 marked the end of three months of grueling work for more than 70 Lancaster boys. The Gales, under the leadership of Head Coach Earl Jones, had a successful season of six wins, three losses, and one heart-breaking tie. After a shuffling and reshuffling of players, the coaches put the new team through an obstacle course of three tough pre-season scrimmages. The Gale gridders were victorious in each. In the beginning of the season, the Gales displayed their strong offense and defense by winning three of their five pre-league games. However, the Gales were not satisfied by resting on these laurels. Practice and spirit toughened them for the impending Central Ohio League. The Gales clinched an 8-6 victory on the Marietta field, then went on to defeat Chilli-cothe 18-0. Supported by the enthusiastic spirit of the Lancaster fans, the Gale gridders held the Zanesville offense to a 6-6 tie. Then after defeating non-league Ironton in a 14-0 shut out, the Gales were defeated by Newark. This loss placed the Gales second in the C. 0. L. Watching the action on the field, Bill Crowell waits for trainer Tom Amerinc to finish taping his knee. Co-captain Butch Kauffman rounds the end to pick up more yardage for the Gales. The leadership of senior Chris England was displayed by his winning attitude. Junior standouts included Gary Graf, Tim Bush, Bill McKinley, Jerome Franklin, Carl Dillon, Steve Henwood, and Ron Alten. The cross country team was also fortunate in having an outstanding sophomore runner, Bill Beaty. His greatest achievement included running the third fastest two-mile for a sophomore in the state of Ohio. The Gale Harriers exhibited their running ability by defeating Granville and Brook-haven in a pre-season scrimmage. Later in the season, the Gales defeated state champions Worthington by fifteen points in a dual meet and again in the Lancaster Invitational by eleven points. The Gales defeated third ranked Upper Arlington by seven points and also tied them once. With a happy smile. Coach Reall shows Chris England the latest results while Jerry Mathias looks on. The cheerleaders made various announcements during school which supported and advertised varsity athletics. Under the direction of Mrs. Ewing, the cheerleaders spent many tiring hours rehearsing their cheers. The girls directed the cheers at the games with exactness and vigor. Planning and executing various pep rally stunts was another way in which the cheerleaders strengthened the morale of the Gales. The unselfish dedication and enthusiasm of the cheerleaders has added balance and enjoyment to the athletic program. The varsity cheerleaders intensify the spirit of the Gale fans during half time with the familiar “Let’s go, let’s fight, let’s win.” Page Seventy-five Waving her pom-poms Leslie Brenstuhl adds rhythm to A souvenir basketball is tossed by Patti Shahan to the screaming Gale a cheer. fans. Poised in mid-air as they plunge toward the water are Jeff Smith and Joe Londeree. Under the direction of Coach Don Phillips and assistant Coach Don Maddux, the Gale tankers completed a respectable season. According to Coach Phillips, this year’s schedule was as difficult as that faced by any other team in the state of Ohio. Their record of 1-10 does not actually do justice to these hardworking swimmers. During the season, 5 of the 10 losses were decided by the last event of the contests. In District competition, the 400 yd. freestyle relay team of Coen, Menson, Bowen, and Lucas finished 6th out of 18 teams. Also in the district, senior Myles Kiphcn finished 9th in the 100 yd. breaststroke and senior Andy Coen copped 10th place in the 50 yd. freestyle. The loss of many valuable seniors will be felt heavily, but Coach Phillips and Coach Maddux expect great swimming from the underclassmen, especially junior Joe Londeree and sophomores Bruce Bowen and Dave Lucas. The dual meet record for the grapplers was 5 and 1. Two Seniors, Doug Bailey and Tom Lehman, finished the dual meet season undefeated. The victory over Newark, 30 to 9, and the defeat of Chillicothe, 31 to 14, were two of the outstanding contests of the season. Lancaster also took first place in the Circleville Invitational, the Big Four, and the sectional meet. It was not surprising that the skilled Lancaster wrestlers were able to rank second in the C.O.L. L.H.S. had two individual C.O.L. champions, and five sectional champs. After defeating Columbus DeSales 57-53, the Gales went into a mid-season slump. However with the able leadership of the seniors, and the cooperation and ability of the underclassmen, the team was able to break the ice by defeating Columbus Watterson. The cagers went on to the sectional tournament, beating Chillicothe 90-76, and in a see-sawing game losing to Miami Trace 61-67. BASKETBALL With an all-out effort. TRACK AND FIELD 1967 The 1967 track team had two goals at the beginning of the season. These were to win the district championship and to be run-nerup in the Fulton Relays. The L.H.S. cin-dermen accomplished both. In the running events the Gale team consisted mainly of sophomores, while in the Field events the contestants consisted principally of seniors. Coach Hamm said that he would particularly miss Randy Kelley, who set a new Lancaster high jump record of six feet four inches, and Bill Cook, who set a new school broad jumping record of 21 feet Five and one-half inches. Five relay records were set in the Fulton Relays. One Final achievement of the Gale cindcrmen was capturing a fourth consecutive Southeastern District Championship. Tom Cunningham leaps over a hurdle to gain the lead. Page Eighty-six Working on his specialty, high jumping, Bob Sheets attempts to clear the six-foot mark. They compiled a record of 19 wins and 5 losses. Perry Blum, Pete Morely, and Pat Doran shared medalist honors throughout the year. After winning the Southeastern District title, the Gale linksmen went on to finish eighth in the State Championship. However, the class soon became a part of the busy life found in the senior high school. Besides attending a wide variety of classes, many became active in clubs and athletics. For the first time they built a Homecoming float, a huge purple and gold boxing glove, with the slogan “Sock it to ’em Gales.” Another outstanding event was their class party planned around the theme “Incense and Peppermint.” This informal dance proved to be a successful get-acquainted evening for the large number who attended. Throughout the year Sophomores played a significant part in the school’s athletic program because of their strength on various teams and because of their good sportmanship. Near the close of the year they found that continued academic effort brought rewards in the form of scholastic recognition. These many experiences, the new friendships, and the strong school spirit developed a tie that bound the class together. As vacation neared, each student not only looked forward to a summer of fun and relaxation but also to returning as Juniors next fall. Page One Hundred twenty-nine Joe Conrad Bruce Baughman President Vice President SENIORS '“phis year the Impossible Dream came true for the Class of ’68. Challenge, excitement, anticipation, personal successes and class achievements-all made this senior year an unforgettable experience. Seniors made their presence felt throughout Lancaster High School and the community, as leaders in academics, athletics, high school organizations, and civic projects. This class demonstrated a new unity and spirit as all its members worked together on “senior” projects. The Homecoming float, “Crown ’Em Gales”, revealed a unique combination of Senior creativity and industry. The Senior Ball, “The Impossible Dream”, carried all beyond the clouds into a magical world of castles and stars. The Class Play, “You Can’t Take It With You”, and the delightfully zany Class Night demonstrated the talent, enthusiasm, and fellowship of this senior class. And the laughter and tears of the All-Night Party became part of the Memory of ’68. Assembled in cap and gown for the inspiring commencement exercises, the Class realized one dream; and on that graduation day it looked toward the future, determined to transform new dreams into realities.
