Page Twelve LANCASTER SCHOOLS Our Schools are established and maintained for the purpose of providing educational oppor- tunity for the young people of our community. The laws of the. state of Ohio require that our com- munity provide the opportunity and the Board of Education is elected and charged with the duty to carry out the mandate of the state law. In order to accomplish this the Board of Education has many meetings, where the laws are implemented by means of policies, and rules and regulations adopted for the operation of our schools. Buildings are provided through many activities of the board. Teachers, administrators, bus drivers, jan'itors, sec- retaries and other personnel are employed to ac- complish the purpose of the board. It is the aim of the board to provide education from kindergar- ten through the second year of college, providing not only scholastic but vocational opportunities to meet every student. Graduation requirements are stipulated by state law and supplemented by board policy adopted by the board. Students who com- plete the requirements are recommended by the high school principal and presented diplomas by action of the board. Education by the very nature of the process is oriented toward the future. Each student must look forward to rich, productive, and satisfying lives. The great promise and pledge of a com- munity is to furnish the best possible educational program for the fullfillment of the individualis capabilities. On each step, one through twelve, the: in- dividual pupil is taught to assume an ever-in- creasing responsibility for his intellectual growth. The pupil is guided through an organized program of basic skills to the understanding and apprecia- tion of our national heritage. These goals can be accomplished only with a broad, rich curriculum to meet the mental potential of each individual student. The ultimate strength of any nation and state is prefaced upon the educational opportunity made available to the youth of each community. The Lancaster City Schools will continue to strive toward greater quality and enrichment of cur- . riculum. There must be a continuous upgrading of skills, talents, and professional abilities of those important people who work daily with the youth of this community. The Lancaster City School System over the last decade has been gearing itself to meet its commitment to the youth of this- city. All who have had a. part in your educational program are proud of your achievements and hold the greatest hopes for your future success. J. E. Brown Superintendent of Schools Walter F. Blume Dr. Edward Jirik . Dr. Donglci Rielle Director of Business Affairs Director of Curriculum Dlrector of Administratlve Service Page Thirteen With the graduating seniors of 1966 go the best wishes of the High School F aculty and Ad- ministration. We hope, sincerely, that your three years with us have been scholastically rewarding and as happy as possible. You are graduating into an adult society that is-and will continue to-make ever increasing demands upon your time, your energies, your skills and your intelligence. You cannot, therefore, fail to understand that you must continue to learn and you must continue to improve yourselves spiritually, physically and intellectually to the end that your ability to compete in a nation and a world wherein distance is no longer a factor but expanding populations, tensions and automation present serious problems that require a strong, able and willing citizenry. COACHING STAFF Through the years Lancaster High School has won its share of league titles and other champion- ships as well. One knows that this is a result of having talented athletes in the student body, but one tends to overlook the important people who work with these athletes. These men are coaches, and without this dedicated group of men there would be no such thing as titles or championships. The coaching staff at LHS is one which has eleven of the finest men anyone would want to know. These men prove their dedication by the long hours which they keep, along with the en- couragement which they give the individual ath- letes from time to time. The student body and faculty have a right to be proud of the LHS coaching staff. The Golden Gales went undefeated in C.O.L. action and compiled an 8-2 overall record, This season saw one of the best conditioned teams in the schools history. Along with this was an incomparable team spirit which enabled the Gales to win their last seven encounters, having dropped two of the first three games of the season. Of course, this was a discouraging factor for the Gales, too, but through individual drive, hard work and determination, as well as a great team effort, the gridders completed this extremely suc- cessful season. This is a credit to the team and the coaches, who were willing to sacrifice to reach. these heights. One thing is evitable: the Golden Gales never cigive up? Several accolades highlighted post seasonal activity. Seven of the Golden Gales were named to the All-C.O.L. first team. Four gridders made All-Ohio, and one Gale was named to a high school All-American team. The 1965 season also saw several school records shattered in the rushing and passing de- partments. With accomplishments such as these the Gales were able to be rated the 16th best team in the state. Our congratulations to C.O.L. Vandermark. At the end of the first week in November of 1965 Lancaster High Schools Cross Country team completed its third and most successful season as an interscholastic team. Under the excellent coaching of Bob Reall, the Golden Gale Harriers copped both the C.O.L. and District crowns, fin- ished 2nd in the Lancaster Invitational, ended in 8th place at the Worthington Invitational, and came through 28th in the State. Having competed in Cross Country just three years shows what the hard work of boys and the leadership of a highly regarded coach can do. Although nine of the twelve lettermen are seniors, Coach Reall can look ahead with optimism because of the fine showing of his reserve team last fall. The reserves compiled a 5-0 mark in dual meets; they were 2nd in a triangular, and came out on top in a quadrangular meet. Congratulations to Coach Reall and all his runners. Good luck in the, future for one of L.H.st newer sports. The Gale tankers made a fine showing for themselves in this first year with a record of 2-4. Constant improvement of each individual swimmer as the season progressed brought smiles t0 the face of the hard-working coach, Joel Mullen. The team competed in the Denison University Relay and finished in 9th place. At the District Meet, the com- petition was a little tougher, but the Gales finished in 8th place, a very admirable accomplishment. Page Sixty-eight I BASKETBALL At the beginning of the 65-66 basketball season, who would have dreamed the Golden Gales would reach the State Class AA Tournament and play in St. John Arena at Ohio State University? Well, they did and the entire student body and faculty, as well as the community are justly proud of the Gales for this won- derful achievement. Even though they didn,t reach the top, they,re still CHAMPS. Under the guidance of Head Coach, George Hill, and his assistant, Corky Sparks, the Golden Gales completed one of the most successful seasons in many years. After all, it is not every year that a team com- piles a 19-6 record. The Gales finished third in the C.O.L. behind Newark and Zanesville, who tied for the champion- ship. At Bainbridge the hoopsters took the Sectional trophy and then went on to Athens where they copped the District trophy. Then it was on to Columbus and the F airgrounds Coliseum where the team laid claim to the schools first Regional trophy. F inally, the Gales did something no other L.H.S. basketball team had ever done. They played in the State AA Tournament which classed them as one of the top four teams in the state of Ohio. The competition was tough, as nat- urally it should be, and the Gales lost in their semi- final tilt to Toledo Libbey by a score of 60-52. Since the Gale cindermen competed in meets throughout the state, there was little time in the team,s rugged schedule for dual meets; thus the Gales competed only in four. Trips were made to Cincinnati, Dover, Cambridge, Columbus, and Berea, plus the District, Regional, and State Meets. The cindermen 0f 365 broke seven school records, four District records, and four C.O.L. records, which is a very impressive accomplishment. Undoubtedly the highest point of the season was the Gales, Victory in the Berea Relays held at Baldwin-Wal- lace College. The Gales were down 22-0 to a fine Strongs- ville team and came on in the final events to nudge the northerners 28-27 V2. Coach Hamm and Coach Reall summarize the season as one in which the hard work and dedication of a great group of boys really proved worthwhile. The: Gales met the best teams in the state. Above all, they successfully defended their C.O.L. and Southeastern District crowns. The Gales, top miler, Dick Scherf, pours on the speed in the final leg of the 4 mile relay. Coach Dick England had a good strong group of boys with which to work. Statistics will definitely prove this point. Golden Gale catcher, Dick Dunkle, was named All-Ohio and earned the right, to play in the All-Star jame at Columbus Jet Stadium during the summer. The team lost out in the first game of the State Sectional Tournament against the Chillicothe Cavaliers, 6-5. Then, in C.O.L. action, the Gales took it down to the wire with Newark, losing the final game, 6-2. There were hopes that the 65 team would go a long way. Although this was not reality, Coach England still called this season a very successful one. Looking to the future and the spring of 66 there is a bright outlook as the Gales have a fine nucleus of returning lettermen to represent L.H.S. in the 1966 season. Eighty-one $2; GIRLS' INTERSCHOLASTIC SPORTS i Girlsi Interscholastic Sports have been an up-and- coming thing at Lancaster High School for the past few years, and this past year has seen the girls compete inte-rscholastically in four different sports; volleyball, basketball, track, and field hockey. The girls, as well as Miss Lee Ann Sadler, are to be commended for the fine addition they have made to the L.H.S. athletic program. It is the desire of most schools to compete in as many sports as possible, and Lancaster High is one of the few schools which has a complete athletic program. 15 The Spring of 65 saw the girls track team com- pile a fine record. Then, this fall, the field hockey team was initiated and for the first year they made a fine showing. The girls look forward to these activities, and ; all one has to do to prove this fact is come to the i L.H.S. gymnasium at 6:30 A.M. and see who is prac- ticing in the gym. I: Best wishes 'go to the girls and Miss Sadler for the future of Girls Interscholastic Sports in Lancaster High School. 6 Tammy Raymond works on her sprinteris stance and firing out form for the upcoming season.
