m e ur rede, n tin Photo by JOHN ROWE Clou of 1937 the story of fife at cjCancadter OJicjh School, oCancaster, Oh in . 1956 MIRAGE together t leue (op Letter citi zenS. J. E. Brown, Supt. of Schools THE SUPERINTENDENT'S MESSAGE The tremendous speeds now successfully attain- able by aircraft and guided missiles make our world seem smaller each passing day; and each day the world seems smaller the need for bigger men, and I do not mean mere physical stature, becomes more apparent. The current times demand that men emerge from our ranks with appreciation for, and an awareness of. the fate of themselves and their fellow man. Unbelievable speeds and inconceiv- able atomic force have been unleashed upon the world and held only in check by the strong moral fiber and fortitude of responsible men. Education is the means of preparing man to live with men in our world today. The educational pro- gram of this community and of this country will determine to a large measure the kind of a world in which we shall live. Our place in world leader- ship has become a great responsibility which we cannot deny or thrust off. Our schools must pre- pare for the new role of America in our times. J. E. Brown Robert W. Payne, Assistant Supt. of Schools Page Six FROM THE PRINCIPAL To all students in L.H.S., The Mirage will serve presently for a quick look at your classmates, the other classes, the clubs, the athletic teams and all the various activity groups of your high school. Then, after having obtained the autographs of your friends and teach- ers. you may put this volume away on the shelf with others of post yeors. Time will poss, and one doy you will pick up the 1956 Mirage and look bock through it with fond memories. The yeors will drop away and you will be. once more, back in L.H.S. So keep your Mirage, don’t let it get away from you. If will serve as the life-long mirror of your greatest days. To our 1956 Seniors, moy you have the very best of everything in whatever you choose to do. We trust that the educational background you have received will prove to be a solid foundation upon which to build further. Fred W. Lowry Fred W. Lowry, Principal Mr . Pearle Waugh. Flight into the Future Like the seeds of o poppy on we fly. Dispersed by the wind into the sky; Flying hither and soaring yon. Finally landing on a clean, green lawn. There to grow—some great, some mean; There to be heard, there to be seen; Like this flower we Seniors are Soon like the seeds to be scattered afar. We ll grow in the light of this world, we will find. Yet always remember the realm left behind. The old ‘‘Alma Mater we ll never forget, As the symbol of age—the sun—starts to set. We may now seem to think there’s naught more to know; But as we grow older, we ll find that's not so; As the years fly by we can only just guess, That the older we ore. we know so much less. Ode to Freshmen How large on oak to on ocorn seems, But we as freshmen hove our dreams: And if we strive to find the key T’will open opportunity. Before an oak can grow so tall It first must be an acorn small, And if we seniors are to be— We’ll start quite small, just like that tree. If we our knowledge would enhance Then we must seize upon this chance To do our best for self and pater, And never forget our Alma Mater. Too soon that day shall come at last When four brief years have quickly passed. Since then alumni we shall be And faithful always unto thee. Stephen W. Sports Editor AN EDITORIAL The 1956 Mirage has an obligation to fulfill to you, the students of Lancaster High School. Our decision was that the book should be written to satisfy your needs and desires. Through pictures and written material we hove presented the administration and classes. We have reviewed the events of the year with special attention given to those who made the events and to those who participated in them. Through this alternation of written and pictorial records, we wove our story of the year, relating the activities of clubs ond ideals of the individuals that hove added to another chapter in the history of the high school. To you, the students, we extend a hope that this Mirage will be treasured not just as a book of pictures and printing, but rather as representing one year of our life. And if, os the years pass by, this Mirage becomes a source of pleasant mem- ories of life and love at L.H.S., then our efforts shall not hove been in vain. The teams had a seasonal record of 12 wins and 6 losses, including six tournament victories and one defeat. The Gales compiled a team batting average of .271 which can be con- sidered good in any league. Coach Martin looks for a fine group of boys advancing from the reserves for the 1956 season. Bradford, Patton, McNew, Coach McVay TRACK The Golden Gales thinclads only won one meet last year, but in the eyes of coaches McVay, Jones, and Cole, the season was successful. In every dual meet, the Gales came through with first and second in the distance events. The Gales had the C.O.L. mile and half-mile champion and runner-up. Also they had two state finalists. Martin Rob- son was the S.E.O. District 880 champion and Charles Lunsford was the runner-up in the mile. GOLF This spring the Gales look for a better win-loss record. The golf team, coached by Mr. Peterson, had a successful season considering their inexperience. They had a record of five wins and five losses in the season play. They were a surprise second-place finisher in the Central Ohio League meet. They managed to place third in the Southeastern Ohio District Meet. Left to Right—Coach Peterson, Rosier, McAllen, Vanscoy. Their program included football and volleyball in the fall, basket- ball in the winter, and the spring sports in the latter part of the year. These sports helped the boys to achieve team spirit and good sports- manship. Also throughout the year, Mr. Leckrono instructed the boys in group games which helped promote indivi- duality. Mrs. McCauley and the G.A.C. officers had a care- fully planned program during the past year. This program included volleyball, basket- ball. bowling, badminton, and ping-pong. These games were participated in by the girls after school and at noontime. The girls received points by playing these games toward their G.A.C. awards.
