This will signify the end of our carefree years and the beginning of a new and more adult life. How short a walk on the bridge of time our high school career has beenl Soon, we must face our responsibility to society and meet the challenges that lie before us. Some graduates will go on to college, others will ioin the service, or enter business and industry. Whatever may be the paths we will travel in our future lives, we will always be bound in the memory and practice of our motto: No one knows what he can do until he tries. 2 F' Qi. .Q .J-A pg N -M .fx :F 4 4. .L , .,, ' .,., 1 -', ' Q.- x ff':'f l Rf:L-P 5 ,U zijn' if -' ,fi .,,w.Q,1.v x, Nfl-'9 .Q MU- 1 -- , . 1. 1 .- . fa 'K 4 x ' u . 1 or J .f V- ,'1'i Q x '-'-- 'G f A. CH.: Toni Davidson D CLASS HISTORY ln 1955, with the hel of our able advisor, Miss Barbara Ordway, our class sponsored lts first function, the Solphomore Swirl, folllbwed by socials and a splash party. Championship selling during the annual magazine sa e brought a substantial increase to our treasury. We climaxed a successful year under the direction of our first class officers: president - Ed Carlsen, vice president - Bob Nort , secretary - Phyllis Green- wood, treasurer - Judy Stuart, and social chairman - Toni Davidson. As Juniors, we installed these new officers: president - Bob North, vice president - Louie Patrignani, secretary - Frieda Aicher, treasurer - Ed Carlsen, social chairman - Janet Nicholson. Paving the way for the enterprises of our senior year, we chose wder blue and white as our class colors and a pink rose as our class flower. Our motto, No one knows what he can do until he tries, gave us an added incentive. Following the tradition set by the Class of 1956, the Junior Prom and Senior Ball were again combined. lts theme, Mystic Midnight, was a perfect setting for the coronation of our King - Kenny May and our Queen - Phyllis Greenwood. Beginning our senior year in a spacious new high school, we are awed at how quickly the years have passed. Now, as Seniors, we must assume the responsibility of setting the pace for traditions in our new school. The leaders for this last, most precious year are: president - Tom lppolito, vice president - Bob North, sec- retary - Judy Stuart, treasurer - Louie Patrignani, and social chairman - Sharon Mclntyre. Under their dl- rection, the Sadie Hawkins Dance was a tremendous success. We are now anticipating the production of our Senior Play and our Senior Ball. The completion of our senior year is drawing near. We, the Class of 1958, will have the honor of being the first graduating class to go forth from the halls of this new Alma Mater. However, we will always remember our years at L. H. L.C.S. students are now able to actively participate in water athletics. Thisjear, we are going to present our first annual water ballet, under the irection of Miss Caroline Parkman. Since November, the girls have steadily practiced fundamental swimming strokes and formations. Using our imagination, we formed our theme. Then the real work began: arranging music, organizing routines, planning novelty and specialty numbers, and, of course, long hours of practice. The addition of this facility not only enables senior hi h school students to have swimming instructions, but the iunior high schoolg, the elementary schools and the adult education classes as well. The team is led by the co-captains Charles Nelson and Kirkland Beck. In this preparatory year, we hope to gain a great deal of experience through our nine prac- tice meets so that next year, upon entering league competition, we will not be completely devoured by the sharks. ln our first competitive meet, we downed the Maryvale Mermen by a score of 49 to 37. The pace setters in this particular meet were: Roger Seibel, Charles Nelson, James Bradley, and Kirkland Beck. ln our second and third attempts for victory, the team went down before the two strongest teams in the division--East Aurora and Clarence. CHARACTER by Frleda Alcher Happiness and success are built on character. It gives you the strength to face life and its problems without falteringg the courage to win, the faith to believe, and the love to forgive. Character is what you are, reputation is what people you are. If you honestly strive to uphold high ideals and fairness in associating with friends and advisors, and create an atmosphere of good influence, you have the makings of a strong and worthy character. When others fully realize your ideals and your outlook toward life, they will award you with everlasting friendship, trust, and above all, a faultless reputation. Each individual is solely responsible for choosing the road he will follow in building his character. We should all thank God that we have the privilege to choose that road. Make it the Qghl onel Left to Right: J. Karl, P.Greenwood, A.Davidson. I.Stuart, Pres., K.Wander, D.Maxim, C.Teague, Treas.. J.Warmus, V.P. , C. Estes, F.Aicher. I.Harper, Miss Diana, Advisor Cl C 72 SCHOLARSHIP by Antolnette Ddvldson Webster defines scholarship for us as learning, or the character and qualities of a scholar. But, what does it mean? Scholarship is much more than mere book-learning and high marks. It is, foremost, a love for learning and the sacrifice of time for reading and studying. You must not only be willing to learn, but you must fully realize that the road to knowledge is not an easy one. Every effort reaps its own rewards and propels you along toward your goal. , Scholarship is the quality of a person, an intangibility which compels him to learn. Scholarship is evident ina student's marks, and more so in his actions. Class interest, attitude, participation are evidences of a student's scholarship. Scholarship is one of many qualities we search for in our leaders and outstanding students. It is a quality demanding the respect of others. It should neither be frowned on as old fashioned nor scorned as sissi- fied and stupid. Education is the true goal of scholarship. Education itself, is not acquired merely in high school or college but through life. By means of literature, observation, experience and contact with others, we continually add to our education. Never consider your education complete, for--'one learns something new every day. With the key of knowledge, we can unlock the door to a successful future. SERVICE by Charles Teague A choice that confronts great artists is this: 'Shall I separate myself from the world of men and capitalize on my own genius, or shall l go down to the world of men and show them what l have learned about beauty? The eminent mu- sician, Sir Wolford Davies of England was con- fronted with this choice. He turned his back on a career of self-glory, lived a life of service, and raised a whole nation's love and apprecia- tion of good music. Service is the creative use of the knowledge, skills, and resources we possess. It may be ren- dered in many ways. At all times and in all places there is opportunity to do good at home, school, church and in the community and world. Doing for others gives one the highest fonn of satisfaction. One must give not only of his time, but in a very personal sense, himself. ln our complex world of today, we need individ- uals who can elevate themselves above the tides of the times to serve their fellow men. To live for the benefit of others is one of man's most noble attributes. Thus when a person overcomes his own selfish desires, he conquers greed and achieves purpose in life. Pierre Van Passen once said: 'Great men live for great causes. Mankind may be divided Into two classes--those who serve and those who are served. By a strange paradox, the servant be- comes the masters the served--the slave. May we, one and all, adopt the axiom of the great- est master of all time whosald, 'Hewhowouldbe greatest among you must be the servant of all . LEADERSHIP by Phyllis Greenwood Leadership is the art of directing others in con- duct and achievement through one's initiative and resourcefulness. A true leader is unselfish because he desires to serve others. A leader is one who sees and does what is best for the group, community, or state with no thought of selfish gain. Leadership is not merely popularity, nor magnetic personality, but the inspirational influ- ence that comes to him who has in daily efforts tried to do the very best hecould in small things and constantly has high ideals. Each individual possesses influence either good or bad upon some group of his associates. Each person may choose the type of leadership he will exert. Leadership will show a person's goodness, mercy, selfishness, and iniquity. Throughout history there has been leaders and followers, but today the world demands leaders- good, strong leaders. The National Honor So- ciety represents leadership. Will you, the lead- ers and citizens of tomorrow, take up the torch of leadership, and follow examples of great men like Eisenhovmr, Churchill, and Chiang Kal-Shek, who have become the leaders of our time? Leadership demands courage, self-respect, clear thinking, and humblenessg but good leadership is a true display of high character and service to others.
