The Lancaster Central School Board of Education, during the year 1956-1957, spent long hours planning for the edu- cation ofthe youth in this school dis- trict. Contracts were signed for a new 20- stall bus garage, as voted on March 6, 1956. Equipment was purchased for the new Senior High School to be opened in September 1957. The new Court Street Elementary School and the Transit Road Elementary School ad- dition were opened last September and dedicated during the winter to the boys and girls ofthe area. Plans have been discussed For an addi- tion to both the Central Avenue and Como Park Schools to house the rapid- ly growing elementary enrollment. ln February 1957 a four and a half mil- lion dollar bond issue was sold to fi- nance the buildings recently com- pleted or under construction . Mr.Walter H.Winter was first elected to,the Board of Education in July 1947 This was eight years before centraliza- tion. He has served the district con- tinuously since that time, being Presi- dent ofthe Board since July 1952. Al- though his position as Personnel Direc- tor at Scott Aviation Corporation in Lancaster is a demanding one, we are grateful that Mr. Winter has given un- sparingly of his time to further the in- terests of the Lancaster Public Schools. 8

I. THE TEACHER IN THE ATOMIC AGE Today's teachers must give their students o clear under- standing of the problems they will face in our atomic world. Teachers can help us meet economic problems by ground- ing us in the courses necessary for today's business and industry. They can improve students' skill in communicating and ex- pressing ideas.
