' PRESENT THE SENIOR YEARBOOK. OF THE LAN- CASTER HICE SCHOOL, LANCASTER, NEW YORK. 1947 FOREWORD In this, our 1947 Cayugan, we have tried to depict a typical school day. We wish to impress upon the minds of our read- ers that besides our formal school subjects, we have extra- curricular activities which provide both instruction, and a- musement. This combination of ,work and entertainment in school will emble us to become better American citizens and to make us more appreciative of a well-rounded life. 4 Q A f SI KL SX 1 --yi ,QW ' .Q . ftixx. 04. It was during this year that we chose blue and gold as our class colors. The class flower is the yellow Rose. In our Junior year, the King and Queen for the Junior Prom were Richard Curtis and Edwine Hornung. The theme was a Rainbow Room with balloons for decorations. We had one other dance to raise funds for our class and have reached the goal that the entire class has been striving for during the past eleven years. The main events in our Senior year were the Senior Ball and Senior Play. About eighteen Sen- iors took part ln the play entitled EVERY FAMILY HAS ONE. We also had a Sadie Hawkins Dance, which featured the famous Wyoming Woodchoppers with lots of Square Dancing. The Seniors went all out to sell stationery to raise funds for the class. Our motto which is launched but not anchor- ed was selected this year. Under the capable management of Miss Cowan, our class helped to develop the Senior High Student Council. We sincerely hope that the council will re- main active in future years. It is with regret that we draw to a close our high school days. Many of us will go to col- lege and some out into the business world, and we all will be broadening our education because it is impossible to live in the world of today without improving ourselves. -- Margaret Reynolds Class Officers- President Edward Halpin--standing Vice President Howard Zurbrick--seated Adviser Mr. Marville Jamieson--seated Secretary - Treasurer Phyllis Polen--seated 6 aloe, Me CVQILCOPJ 7 Aldinger, Arlene Birtch, Ioan Bochenek, Theresa Bock, Austin Bohlen, Richard College Entrance General Academic General Academic College Entrance College Entrance Bork, Ann Brooks, Ronald C. W x l l Q? i1--' 'fs .Q 'Q ' Fs. .iG'.- 9 1-1- N ' v X .. f be ka j a.. Qjurf Our fine cheerleadlng group has grown over a period of years. Cheerleaders are chosen when they are in the ninth grade. They spend that year practicing cheers and trying to make up new cheers. When they are in tenth grade, they become Jay Vee cheerleaders and lead the cheers for the lay Vee games. This year, the lay Vee cheerleaders wore red sweaters and black skirts lined with red and white checked taffeta, while the Varsity cheerleaders wore the white sweaters and black skirts lined with red, black and white checked taffeta. Duringtheir Junior and Senior years, the girls are Varsity cheerleaders and cheer for the Varsity games. For the '46 football season the Varsity cheerleaders had two boys with the squad. They wore black and white slacks and the traditional white sweater with a red block L. By combining clever verse and acrobats our cheerleaders have invented some outstanding cheers such as the Indian cheer, Ahh:Boom, Julius Caesar, The Jaya Cheer and the Lancaster Cheer. Their part in the games adds much color to our sport life. 42 TBALL JMNEE BASKE 1siRow-- D. Gdorglni, S. Luxne, M. Dembrow - Coach, A. Robin - Dove. uer , Nl. Brown, Broska. son, D. d Row-- D. Q3 .fi be JERN J9NN5T0N BLOCK L CLUB Lancaster's Block L Club is larger than it has been in previous years. The coveted Block L Letter may be earned by any boy in our school who builds up a given number of points in a chosen sport. The social activities of the Block L are the Football Banquet in the fall and the combined Block L and Old English L picnic in the spring. OLD ENGLISH L CLUB The Old English L Club was formed for the purpose of giving girls an opportunity of earn- ing a school letter. It takes the place of inter-school competitions. They earn their L's by a system of points, which are gained through sports. The girls feature an annual baked goods sale and party. There are also many other interesting activities, such as dances and skating. The school season is usually ended with a joint Block L - English L party. 51 BASKETBALL One of the glrls many extra curricular activities is basketball. The girls of the gym classes organize into teams which play after school on Thursday. Girls' basketball rules must be followed and each team must have its own captain. If two teams are tied at the end of the season, they have play offs.. This year there are fourteen teams in all. Points for the Old English L are earned by each gir1,who participates in basketball. Q G6 f ft i f D X? Y BETTY WADE!- 52 GIRLS' BOWLING Among the sports for girls at Lancaster High School, bowling has proven to be one of the favorites, with ninety-shi glrls participating under Miss G1llette's excellent leadership. Although there were many high scores, Shirley Osborne topped the list with an average of 187. VOLLEYBALL Each fall the girls of the Senior High organize vol- leyball teams to compete against each other. The class of '49 had the winning team with a mixed jun - ior and senior team coming in second place. 53 SENIOR HIGH STUDENT COUNCIL Our class in its freshman year was fortunate in being a member of Lancaster's first junior High Student Council. Last year the.Sen1or High Dis- cussion Club furnished an assembly program out- lining Student Council and its advantages to the student. Later in the spring the first Senior High Student Council was started JUNIOR HIGH STUDENT COUNCIL In the junior High the Student Council settles cur- rent student problems. Last year the council work - ed out a system by which two students from each homeroom act as hosts and hostesses in the caf- eteria. Conduct in the dining room has improved. The Junior High Student Patrol is keeping order in the halls between classes. 54 DISCUSSION CLUB The Discussion Club, which is made up of students who are interested in American history, meets under the expert gui - dance of Miss Cowan once a week after school. Topics of current interest to every high school student are discussed. OFFICE STAFF AND LIBRARY ASSISTANTS Among the services our student office girls can provide is to connect the Lancaster High School Exchange with the main exchange in the town. They can connect various room telephones in the building with one another. The P.B.X. QPr1vate Branch Exchange! gives information to visitors a- bout our school. The other girls included in this picture are those who assist Miss Davis with some of the library work.
