Physically tough, mentally alert, and moral- ly sound, they are proud of their uniform, proud of their service proud of their country. Embued with a willingness to die in de- J fense of the principles for which this nation stands, they con- sider their duty to their country more important than life itself. By developing our cherished yearbook around the theme of their activities, we wish, this year, humbly to evidence our profound appreciation of their sublime courage and heroic sacri- fice. We know they will acquit themselves admirably, for that is an old American tradition. We, the class of 1944, salute them! U edhnei Class ROBERT ACKMAN, President PERN SCHMAHL, Vice-president Class As we look back on the happy years that we have spent together, it is inevitable that we should find written large in our memories those events and achievements which have most memo- rably contributed to our progress as a class. In i94CP4i, as Freshmatic neophytes, we participated for the first time, in the creation of a representative form Of government, which laid a solid foundation for our subsequent years of prosperity and abundance. we chose our class colors, blue and silver, the blue of the azure skies and the silver of the lining of its clouds, and for its everlasting beauty we se- lected the crimson rose as our class flower, while with the motto, USUCCESS OUR AIMU, we early showed that confidence in our collec- tive abilities which has since so clearly vindicated itself. In 1941-42, our Sophomore year, Mrsf Shannon was ap- pointed our class adviser, and we chose as our class officers Robert Kihl, presidentg Beverly Southworth, vice-presidentg and Esther Finch, secretary-treasurer. We established our reputation for doing things thoroughly, thanks to our efficient adviser, by sponsoring a successful magazine sale and two popular dances. The juniors and seniors of that year, we ironically recall, prophesied for us a financial loss because no mere Sophomore class had ever engaged so expensive an orchestra. Their dire forebodings, however, fortunately proved groundless, for not only did we not lose money on the dance, but we realized a net profit of 51,65 for our class treasury. . 12 fiiee s L i ESTHER FINCH, Secretary CHARLES CREED, TreaSurer istor In 1942-43, under the aegis of Robert Kimbrough, our Junior Class president, assisted by UDonH Simme, vice-president, Esther Pinch, secretary, and Charles Creed, treasurer, we cele- brated our Hallowe'en and Christmas holidays with dances appropri- ate to those festive occasions, climaxing the social year with the annual Junior Prom, the motif of which was HStarlight Sonatau, Charles Creed wearing tne crown, complemented by Laura Lanthier as his royal consort. The senior year was auspiciously inaugurated with the elections of Robert Ackman as our president, Fern Schmahl, our vice-president, and Esther Finch and Charles Creed, our secretary and treasurer, respectively. The senior play, HSkiddingn, di- rected by Mr. Bigelow, the most successful dramatic undertaking of recent years, both financially and artistically, aided by a sale of Christmas cards and a series of dances, filled our class coffers to the bursting point, while our Senior Ball, the social highlight of our four years of high School, was delightfully an- ticipated. we can hope only that the future will hold for us an equal measure of the same good fellowship, prosperity, and hap- piness that have been ours during these happy years in Lancaster High School. Cowan, the Discussion Club was organized to afford seniors on opportunity to discuss problems of current interest and to develop skill in research, discussion and leadership. Officers include Floyd Price, general chairmang Beverly Southworth, vice-chairmanj Phyllis Meidenbauer, secretary- t reasurer. 39 Senior la The hilariously amusing Broadway Uhitn of several years ago and the original Andy Hardy play, HSkidding,N was the happy choice this year for our Senior play, which played to capacity houses Friday and Saturday evenings, November 23rd and 24th. We had the distinction, in fact, of being the first senior class, within'the last decade at least, to reap such a rich financial harvest from the annual dramatic offering. This whole- some picture of American family life showed Marion Hardy, a college girl interested in politics, vivaciously played by Laura Lanthier, falling in love with Wayne Trenton, the scion of a wealthy family, convincingly portrayed by Harold Lein. The mother of the family, capably enacted by Julia Harms, on whose broad shoulders fell most of the onus of maintaining the family morale, was suitably complemented by the ever-judicious and dig- nified Judge Hardy, a role very effectively undertaken by Howard Mason, while the two daughters, who constituted the remainder of the family, were plausibly interpreted by Fern Schmahl and Beverly Southworth, not forgetting of course the inimitable and adorable UANDYH Hardy, who, in the capable hands of william Nichols, vir- tually stole the show. Robert Kimbrough acquitted himself cred- itably as the absent-minded grandpa who was always reminiscing about Grandma, while Al Kopf injected life into the veins of this otherwise quiet play in the role of a hard-fisted politician. Betty Whittaker, as the repressed and rebellious Aunt Milly, showed considerable histrionic promise: we shall watch her career with eager expectancy. Bob Kling, assisted by Ray Measer, as the ubiquitous and omniscient stage manager, certainly justified his local rep- utation with the hammer and saw. Special scenic effects were achieved by Miss Bates, Miss Studley, Mr. Brock, and Mr. Miles. The production was directed by Mr. Bigelow. ' 40 P UN? Q- Q? . , . nm f ' ' THIRD ROW: T. Bochenek, P. The chorus gave a Christmas Cantata featuring four guest soloists, and also participated in the May Festival. The chorus, this year, was unusually well balanced due to the fact that the harmony parts were more equally divided.
