Happiness 'Zhm gh Sfrccda In a world of turmoil and strife, we graduates of 1945 must learn to treasure and defend those things in life which give happiness and pleasure to all. Each and every one of us must put forth his or her best effort in order that happiness may con- tinue to exist, not only in this country, but in all the countries on this earth. Our freedom and happiness have become real and personal things which must be preserved at all costs, even if it entails sacrificing our lives. You may wonder what we graduates mean when we say Hhappinessu. A home, a family, friends, a smiling face, a friend- ly handclasp, all these make this world a better place in which to live. We experience spiritual happiness and inner content- ment when we realize that while we worship God in our own church, others are free to follow their faiths, no matter to what race they belong or what creed they follow. The people in this country may freely give voice to their opinions and advice, whether these be in praise or in con- demnation, they may enjoy the privilege of reading any newspaper or magazine published, no matter whether what they read is for or against the government and its officials, they may listen to any radio program they so desire, whether it be music, drama, or a news commentator. what American is there who does not enjoy to the fullest these privileges which are his birthright? The bright.eyed, laughing children of America have never known what it is to hunger for the warmth of a home or the food necessary to keep their bodies alive. They need have no fear of their friends or neighbors spying on their actions and perhaps reporting them to the police. 'To be free in our thoughts, words, and actions, and to be free from fear--this, we believe, is the meaning of happiness, and it is in this spirit and for this purpose that we have chosen the theme of happiness for our yearbook. Therefore, graduates, we bid you go forth in this same spirit and with this same purpose to spread that friendly smile, offer that kindly handclasp, and those words of encouragement which we all, in every way, need, thus you can help to keep freedom and happiness in this world. miylfy COMLRQ' '48 4
