SOCIAL STUDIES Good American citizens are formed by knowledge of their social environment and good trainingj the social studies de- partment of our school endeavors to give the students this train- ing. ln Social Science Miss Snyder instructs them in the machin- ery and functions of our political, social, and economic life' ' Economics in the business of earning a living. OOHHEHCIAL DEPARTMENT The purpose of the Commercial Department is three- fold: To provide vocational knowledge, provide proper social habits, and to provide business knowledge for personal use. The teachers are: Miss Gracia Haight, M . E. W. Ockerman, and Miss Eleanor Smedley. The Commercial Department offers three courses: Bookkeeping offers the student an opportunity to obtain instruc- tion for vocational and personal use' a Stenographic course 57 502930 16,83 g F ' Q3 X a lfj of 5 'Ura --N offers a student training in typing, shorthand and general sten ographic techniques for both social and vocational purposes the Clerical course Provides the student with a knowledge of general office techniques and sufficient control oftechniques forsuccess ful vocational participation This department also provides many students from other courses with valuable electives THE E NGL I SH DEPARTME NT Our high school's English courses acquaint students with great American and English authors, distinguishing between genuinely good books and those which are cheap or only briefly popular Correctness in expressing one'S self, especially in writing, is another aim of English, and equally important is the attempt made to direct students toward the best 1n radio and motion pictures So the four years of English are not Just a school subject but a source of lasting value for life after high school Besides the usual four years of English, American and Enqlish literature and World Literature are offered here 15 y Q Y .K Q20 . 03.
