lt all began on August 31st, 1970, as 89 petrified probies entered the doors of L.G.H. prepared to face three long years of . . . ? Little did we know what was in store for us: hours of classes - tedious memorization of bones, muscles, and organs. With hearts pounding fast we received our first report card. Then that all-important day - insomnia the night before and finally we were taking BP's and TPR's on real patients. Next came beds and baths. With hearts longing to go home, we attempted to write themes for our F81M English courses. Concentration was difficult. Carrying lighted candles, we dedicated our lives to our profession as our parents proudly watched. Study hours were over! Our evenings were free. The next new experience was the O.R. with all its cold sterility. Penetrating stares and red faces predominated. Then - three weeks of blissful vacation!! Upon return, we faced nights, evenings, and weekends in Med-Surg. Nighttime snacks kept sleepy eyes open. Oh . . . that unforgettable Pharm course! With sighs of relief we entered specialties. E-town and observations dominated our memories of Peds. Along with this went minidrips that wouldn't run, isolation, croupettes, Tempspar, tears, and lots of TLC. OB brought proud fathers, tired mothers, and bundles of joy. Remember those timed contractions, D.R. rushes, crying and wet bottoms, postpartum checks, and never-to-be-forgotten mothers' classes? Psych!! Wernersville . . . Tuesday and Friday night trips. Peanut butter crackers, and milk are what kept us alive. Writer's cramp and endless papers. How about Bingo, movies, and dancing with the patients? Disastrous times, Agnes and snowstorms, brought double shifts and weary bodies. Aah! Summer vacation with an extra week. Time passed quickly and with only six months to go, we entered Med-Surg 410 and 420. The topping to our cake of education was E.R., C.C.U., leadership, clinics, geriatrics, and follow-throughs. The other side of those three years was captured in our dorm life. Support from parents subdued our homesickness. We couldn't miss Marcus and Joe or Mr. Softee's bell. Spare time? was spent in various activities. How many of us recall the 10:00 rush to the mailbox? Among other fond memories are dates on Wednesday, telephone calls, the sunporch, crocheting, pranks in the shower room, little sis-big sis chats, Christmas parties and caroling, finals, S.G.A. meetings, writing letters . . . Graduation day, May 20, 1973. 59 girls in white receive their diplomas. lt was worth it all. Happiness with our final success, tears for those we'll never see again, friendships that will endure the years and miles, brides, newlyweds, and mothers-to-be, the closing of a page of our lives that can be reopened only through memories. This then is the end and the beginning. An unknown future lies ahead. With God's help we step forward to greet it.
