TO HELP . . . To nurse is to help comfort a child crying for his mother, to give encouragement to a wom- an about to give birth to her first child, to emotionally prepare a man who will be con- fined to bed for weeks while his injured heart mends, to be a solace to a mentally ill patient by just being there, to cheer an elderly woman with a fractured hip, to ease the pain of the dy- ing, to aid the doctor by conscientiously carry- ing out his orders, to reassure the family in an emergency situation, to help prevent further di- sease and suffering by teaching.
