I 02 DEDICATION We entered the world of medicine with eager expectations, but also with timid apprehensions. We looked for guidance, we groped to find someone we admired, someone with whom we could identify. We first learned to know you, Mrs. Linda Buckwalter, as an instructor in our probie days. Your serene manner and patience led us calmly over stormy days of learning new techniques! With growing esteem we chose you as class advisor, not only in our first year, but also in the two succeeding years. We gained insight into the psychology of man under your teaching. With your help, Obstetrics became an enjoyable reality. In response and appreciation for your guidance, logical advice, acceptance and belief in us, we dedicate our 1967 NIGHTINGALE to you. ?b up I i - L l l , , ,.,,,.,,.,.. ,,,A a M,.,.J t also with d someone nstructor in ver stormy ou as class years. As if by fate, several tests always seemed to occur about the same time, our beds were no longer used for sleep- ing, but rather for studying. Window sills and chairs held the overflow from our sag- ging bookcases. Each year found us in the labs fha iv learning new procedures. Needles, syringes, catheters, stethoscopes, and bed pans became important tools of our profession. The pursuit of learning is a continuous process. Medical knowledge and nursing experience requires perseverance. s.. They seerned never. lddl' that shorthand ul S0 that We could S if by fate, several cur about the same onger used for sleep. dying. For most of us, nurses's training was our first ex. perience in living away from home. New friends were made and we soon realized that studying was essential to earn our nurse's cap. Our junior year found us helping to deliver babies, setting up O.R. tables, getting experience in psychiatric nursing at Wernersville, and working with sick children. . . . Finally our black stripe-we were seniors! We had experience in clinics, in the Emergency Room, in Intensive Care and in Public Health. As we graduate, we look back on the past three years and realize that our formal instruction has come to an end, but for us, it is only the be- ginning. 5 . These have not been easy years for you, but I believe you now possess confidence and enjoy a sense of accomplishment. Each and everyone of us has passed many individual milestones since we first encountered each other in Psychology Class. You have spent many hours in the classroom and clinical areas-now you are about to be presented to the world with your new found knowledge. Some of you will remain here at Lancaster General, but most of you will carry our cap and pin to distant points on the globe. Wear them with pride, for you possess the ability to carry out comprehensive, intelligent and sympathetic nursing care. Thank you for permitting me to relive my years of training through you and your. class. Your friend- liness, zeal and interest have certainly madepthese three years enjoyable and memorable ones for me. I shall miss you, but each one of you has left me with' a momento of yourself, and so I have a wonderful scrap- book of memories. I would liketo leave with you a thought which has helped me many times through the years. If you have faith as a grain of mustard seed nothing shall be impossible unto you. If it wasn't broken before, it will be now X KX x If CLASS HISTORY Wide eyes, nervous laughter, curiosity, and tears were all a part of that first day, September 14, 1964, when sixty-nine of us made our way to Fondersmith to register and begin life as student nurses at Lancaster General Hospital. Our first week was filled with introductions. We caught a glimpse of what lay ahead: Chemistry, Anatomy and Physiology, Clinical Nursing, and many other subjects. Many persons spoke to us that first week and explained our responsibilities and what was expected of us. Our heads swam with information and our arms ached with the load of books. Each evening was filled with entertainment and initiation by upperclassmen. We sometimes wondered who was entertaining whom. We learned much that week, but the one thing we learned above everything else was how to appreciate weekends! Two weeks later we began working on the floors. With practice we conquered the art of bed-making, giving baths, taking TPR's and blood pressures, and giving injec- tions. Through working together and sharing mutual problems, we learned to know each other better. In addition to much study, we had basketball, Glee Club, SNAP, and dorm life to occupy our time. And then it was Christmas Vacation! Before we left we enjoyed a student-faculty banquet and caroling through the hospital. After va- cation the weeks flew, filled with finals, new subjects, and new procedures to learn. May 14, 1965 was the highlight of our education. With a sense of accomplishment, we received our caps, lit our candles, and left our probie days behind us. Along with the satisfaction of being a nurse with a cap, came a keen sense of responsibility and knowledge that this was only one of the stepping stones of our education. We still had much to do and much to learn. Our junior year consisted of three months study and experience in each specialty: Operating Room, Obstetrics, Pediatrics, and Psychiatric affiliation. In each we developed new skills and met numerous challenges. September 1966 marked the beginning of our Senior year. Another status symbol was added: a black band on our cap. There was no ceremony, but the feeling of accom- plishment and the realization that another step had been taken was still present. Our dream of becoming a R. N. was rapidly turning into a reality. This last year has been a busy one, filled with hard work, study, yearbook planning, and fund raising. QWe'll never forget the chicken barbecuelj Our clinical experiences included ICU, Diet Kitchen, EENT, Rehabilitation, Visiting Nursing, Industrial and School Nursing, along with starting I.V.'s and passing levine tubes on each other. Now we are standing on the top step of this flight of stairs, and as we look up we see many more flights, each going in a different direction. It is up to us to choose the next flight, but whatever our choice, we know that the past three years with its fond memories and valuable experiences have given us adequate preparation, guidance, and courage to climb higher. --jean Huber C lam H irtorian NIGHTINGALE PLEDGE I solemnly pledge myself before God and in the presence of this assembly: To pass my life in purity and to practice my profession faithfully.
