The Class of 1961 SEVEN - Y- W H 'i To the members of the graduating class of 1961: lt has been said that the solemnity of graduation symbolizes the end of preparation: now is the time for energetic doing if one is to make life worth living. Each of you undoubtedly has a desired objective for the future. Irrespective of what this may be, fix your purpose, be sure that it is the right one, study the details of the ways and means by which you may reach it, and follow through. On behalf of the Board of Directors and the Administration, I am happy to extend to each of you hearty congratulations and best wishes for success and happiness in life. Donald C. Smelzer, M.D. Executive Director EIGHT Q To the Class of 1961: We are proud to list you as graduates of the Lancaster General Hospital School of Nursing. Farmer Chief of Sur99fY As student nurses we have within us an infinite yearning to gain ,knowledge helpful to us in giving care to our pa- tients. We remember when surg- ery was foreign to us. Those first days in the operating room are memorable ones. We became immaculate lig- ures in white gowns, hair cov- I K ers, and conductors for 'our Mes Anna Mae NQY spotless shoes. We were filled with interest, but we were slightly frightened. Supervisor, Operating R'-90m Orientation treated us to our first look at our spic and span environment. We were eager to observe an operation and disappointed not to be able to do so- right away. Some of us could not control our anxious eyes, and students were often found peeking through the square glass windows of the OR doors. There was so much for us to see and learn. The tiny dials, paper discs, levers, and lights on the autoclaves increased our interest, while the classroom reminded us of the task of study ahead. We solved much of the unknown in our classroom by listening to lectures, taking notes and practicing accepted surgical procedures. K Occasionally, the silence of our classes was broken by laughter or a. sigh as we discovered our mistakes and corrected them. How Miss Eva Alexander . As' ' , ' R proud we were to be able to glove and don our gowns without S 'Siam Supemsor Operating com contaminating ourselves! Often we thought we would scrub the skin from our hands and arms but we soon learned the importance of timing our Hscrubsv. We remember how we draped one another, applied the rules of sterility, and performed mock operations . Now scalpel, forceps, and hemostats had meaning to us. We had a feeling of accomplishment when we correctly set up a table for a major operation. We remember -our breaks and the way we checked the signal lights to see if anyone outside the classroom was listening to us. We viewed the interior of the OR and were impressed with its spotless walls. We remember the times wecleaned everything with alcohol and carbolic acid. We tolerated the anesthesia fumes, whiffed the potent Bard-Parker solution, examined jars of suture, and pondered each sterile package. Then one day wide-eyed and motionless we. peered over our masks and observed our first operation. We were aware of the soft pat of the hemostat as it came in contact with the surgeon's gloved hand and felt the oneness of the team of whiteclad figures before us as each performed his duty. , Our big day came when we put all our learning to use and took our position by the operating room table. Our t' ' ' ' ' opera ing room experience has given us the principles d b ' . . . . an asis of man of our nursing ro - used in giving care to those who mean so much to use-our patients. y D P Cedules SIXTY-SIX p,, 1 of-4' W 'Q as 2 -,pfzpi , ,gk .sasfaf - YQ f QS4 X. .4 B I, M12 .:-42 0 2 - ff 1 ' 5 .. ii The Drs. Dr. Christian S. Wenger Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology it Miss Alma Engle Supervisor of Maternity This part of the hospital, set apart from the rest, seemed like a mystery to us. We often saw expectant mothers coming from receiving ward on a wheel chair or the new family getting into the car on their way home. We were unaware of all that went on between these two events until we spent three months on maternity ward. First we went to the delivery room where we listened to fetal heart beats and timed con- tractions. We felt the thrill of scrubbing for a delivery. There was the smile of the anxious mother's face as she heard the first cry of the child and the typical fatheris excitement when he took a first look at his baby. Next we went to the nursery with its chorus of cries coming from hungry infants. Here we learned the proper way to feed, bathe, and dry baby with plenty of T.L.C. We will remem- ber all the -troubles we had at our first attempt with the formula slip. There was premie nurs- ery too, and eye dropper feedings. ln mothers class we taught the new mothers how to bathe baby. And finally we took care of the mothers. Here we saw and the problem of choosing just the right name. We watched with a strange warm feeling as Mother fed Baby for the first time. I ' ' ' joy expressed in cards and flowers After three months we left maternity grateful for thesexperience we had gained and thank- ful to all those whohelped us reach another step in our education. We also have a large critical ward which has proven very beneficial in giving better and constant nursing care to the critically or seriously ill. Many of us will never forget the times when all we did, or had time to do, was run around checlcing I.V.'s and clysis, which always seemed to run dry or infiltrate just as the doctor walked into the room. Nor will we forget crush- ing those pills, tasting all the vitamins, filling croupettes, calling for someone to come help feed, deciding where to put the new admissionsg and, at the same time trying to play the role of parent, teacher, friend and nurse to our little patients. How foreign these words appeared, accompanied by our first sights of Philadelphia State Hospital, gray, silent, and fore- boding. We can never forget the learning and patience involved in one of the most important facets of nursing. Ripple Chief of 0p9holmolo9Y ln our E.E.N.T. ex- perience, we obtained the experience of caring for the young children having their D L' S' Hutduson Chief of Oiolaryngol09Y tonsils taken out and the older folks having cataracts removed. We learned quickly to organize our thoughts and actions to admit 10-15 'I'8cA's in an hour. These little tots came into the hospital anxious and apprehensive about the new ex- perience. We had to gain their confidence and the confidence of their parents. We had to explain the needle sticks, the adhesive tape identification tags, the plastic bracelets, and every- thing including the last but not least detail of the ice-cream and 7-Up they'll receive after the operation. We soon learned to make the routine checks of each throat and to respond to the deep voice of the doctor saying, A flashlight and tongue blade, Miss Nurse. After spending these two weeks we moved on for our cataract experience. Here we be- came teachers explaining the procedure of the many eye drops, the flushes, and the black eye patches. We had to help these patients in their dark world, to eat, to bathe, and to explain that they must lie still. Finally the black patches are taken off the patients' eyes and we felt as though we also were seeing the new light. These four weeks to us were a very worthwhile experience. It's hard to say exactly why she will decide to spend so much of her life serving others. But, fortunately, she will. And so will thousands of others like her. In a few years, she and those others will enter a School of Nursing to learn how to care for and wait upon the sick, aid the injured and help the in- firm. Like the nurses in training today, she will learn many things of science and of nature, of the mind and of the body. Much of this learning comes from the teachers in the classroom, the labo- ratory, the operating room, the sick room. The lessons leamed mean better health for all of us. That's why the job of the nursing instructors is so important. And that's why we're so grateful to these teachers for their unselfish and untiring efforts. Teachers and students have earned the admiration and respect of all men.
