The friendships we have made, the joys and sorrows we have shared, will remain with us the rest of our lives. Each of us will go our wayg some will further their education, others will move into the missionary held, and there are those who will hear the sound of wedding bells. No matter what we do or where our paths may take us, we shall always be influenced by our student experiences, the people who have helped us and those with whom we have lived the past three years. There have been times of complaints, but when we look back, we only remember the happy times because they outnumber our dismal days over and over again. We wish at this time to take the opportunity to thank our instructors who patiently guided us and to thank those whom without, there would have been no practical experience available -our patients. With this we close another chapter in the book, our life. rwo WC have Jin with ucation, VC those Vhal we lluenced us and ve look number ink our whom 1ailablC its Dedication Although you have guided our progressing steps for only one year, we dedicate this, our yearbook, to you, Mrs. Nancy Tingley Director of Nurses I All your kindnesses, understanding, sincerity, and patience -because of these, you shall always be well and fondly remem- bered by all of us, the Class of 1960. Now' Metroid-S i I f grzintm' Donors I Histor of the Class of I960 On the fateful day of September 3, 1957 the class of 1960 had its birth, when eighty shy and apprehensive girls learned to know one another at Hcoke time . There were many strange faces to know and so many names to remember, but somehow we accomplished the impossible and not only remembered faces and names but elected class ofiicers from their midst. We elected Ronnie Reese, president, Joyce Brubaker, vice-president, Shirley Rankin, secretary, Nancy Diller, treasurer, Carole Wittle, historian, and Marjorie Keller, social chairman. We selected as student council representatives Kathryn Mann, Joyce Brubaker, Joyce Rohrer, Judith Hellen, Patricia McDivitt and Shirley Rankin. ,,,',., ' H , ,wi 'fc s, e f -yi-ZX, fy if X 1-V 0 R. Reese J. Brubaker N. Diller C. Wittle M. Keller Our preclinical days were spent in long, hard hours of study, for we knew if we wanted to become nurses, we had to study. However, there were many diver- sions such as the doggie roast at Long's Park, Glee Club every Monday night, swimming at the YWCA, the Halloween party given by the Seniors and the Thanksgiving Tea which we gave for our former high school teachers. And finally in the later part of October our uniforms arrived. Remember those first frightening days on the floor-and the terror of doing new procedures. And then it was Christmas and we experienced the caroling processional through the hospital and buffet supper afterward. We also participated in the Annual Student Nurses' Christmas Glee Club Concert at the Iris Club. And along with our class project of selling stockings, we sold Christmas candy. Gur two weeks of Christmas vacation flew by and we were back working harder than ever with more confidence. We took part in the Winter dance at the Brunswick, the Mother-daughter Tea, and worked hard selling doughnuts, candy and nylons. However, we realized capping was only the beginning of the end. Memories of the following months as juniors included the May dance with Ronnie Reese and Lynne Haupt as our representatives, the two weeks vacation, working evening duty and nights and our new experience in the OR and Diet Kitchen. . . And Then We Were Intermediates . . Well, we were really on the way now! Some events to remember from that second year were the Rummage sale, the Halloween party, the Thanksgiving Tea and the election of Ruth Anne Andrews as president, Ronnie Reese, vice-presi- dent, Patti Whitekettle, secretary, Marjorie Keller, treasurer, and Ellen Lawrence, social chairman. Our student council representatives were Nancy Diller, Joann Bucher, Judith Hellen and Kathryn Mann. R' AndfeWS R. Reese P. Whiteketfle M. Keller E. We attended the holiday dance Moonlight and Musicv at the Iris Club. I On May 2, 1958 we sponsored the banquet for the Seniors in Fondersmith Eassroom. .Our theme was oriental. Supervisor of Surgery Supervisor, surgery SURGERY From the pre-operative preparation until the patient is discharged and the hospital doors close behind him-this is the period of surgical nursing. It is a period of explanation,Vteaching, preparation psychologically as well as physically, intensive care, and sharp alertness to daiiger sig- nals. It is a period that calls for many skills, much knowledge, calmness with speed and assur- ance, and clear thinking. As Seniors we were equipped to meet these demands. V V Constantly we had to call upon our stored-up knowledge -- recognizing the symptoms of shock and carrying out emergency measures, determining the signs that showed the need for re- lease from pain and comparing the toxic symptoms of a certain drug to those presented by the patient. Psychologically the patient needed preparation before his surgery-what would happen and how he should expect to feel afterward. As we took vital signs every fifteen minutes on a craniotomy patient, as we encouraged a pa- tient to walk straight after abdominal surgery, or taught a patient with a broken leg to walk with crutches as we recognized the need for comfort and reassurance, we reflected that surgery can be major or minor, complicated or uncomplicated-but it is never dull! Seiple 2nd row: H. Freeland, K. longenecker, S. Harnish, P. Garner. Chief of Medicine EDIC N Medical patients, unlike those with a quick recovery period from surgery, require a long ted- ious uphill grade to return to health. An innumerable number of medications, blood pressures, call bells, bed pans, and Clinitests make this a very busy and interesting field of nursing. Here we learn to carry out such procedures as enemas, douches, glucose tolerance tests and catheter irrigations which were taught to us in our first six months of training. Here we teach the patient with dia- betes the importance of insulin and diet therapy. The patient with heart disease is taught the im- portance of a balanced rest and exercise. Although at times the work seems to become drudgery, after a patient's back is rubbed, and the pillow iluffed, his look of appreciation and whispered, Thank you, nurse, that feels so good, are the rewards which make the work light. ' One experiences the real joy of nursing when the patient who has been in the hospital for weeks with a coronary occlusion or Tuberculosis has finally climbed back to health and greets the happy smiling faces of his wife and children. We, as nurses, must always keep our eyes on the distant goal of recovery for so often the patient,s hopes and spirits fail him when he faces his long stay in the hospital. Evening Duty Supervisor Assistant Evening Duty Supervisor Night Duty Supervisor ED and ights How could we, newly capped student nurses, handlethe activities, tragedies, drama, respon- sibility that we were sure to encounter that first fateful evening on duty-alone-in charge of a whole wing of a section? Those new caps, still strange on our heads, and starched bibs felt grand and protective at first. But as soon as we reported at 3 oiclock for the first time, the stiffness and protection seemed to have vanished. No, they werenit going to carry out the duties and responsibilities - we were! What a sobering thought that was . . . There's an old saying: Experience is the best teacherf' We never before realized just how true that was. It was as though that motto were written specifically for us. We had the basic knowledge and skills-now we needed to learn how to organize and carry out that knowledge. As we became accustomed to the evening routine, we began to enjoy our work. We were in charge, we were responsible for our patients' welfare, it was an exhilarating feeling, but one not to over- shadow our thoughts of duty. The hushed voices, the slow grinding of the elevators as they moved in their shafts, the lonely darkness, the tragedies and deaths-these were our impressions of night duty. We always a550C18ICCi mystery, drama, and romance with the night duty shift. But as the evening duty nurse reported to us, transferred the keys, and left, -who thought about romance? Who was looking for mystery? Not us! All we wanted was to be back in our rooms with the others. Why? We Were scared! It was dark outside and we were all alone . . . h HOWCVCF, we sooned learned that the night held nothing to fear-for us. It was the patient X O needed comfort and reassurance, and the knowledge that he was not all alone in his pain. nd 50- by helplng and comforting others, we forgot our own misgivings. 1 Our first impressions were not entirely wrong. There was plenty of tragedy, drama, and ex- citement: the unscheduled admissions, the cardiac patient who suddenly began to fade, the dying patient whose last spark of life had just been extinguished - yes, there was plenty of work to CCP US busy and interested. To this sanctuary come those seeking aid, and those for whom aid is too late. At one minute there can be two empty treatment rooms and five open beds, in the next there will be two treatment rooms in use, five beds filled, the benches outside overflowing with waiting patients, an ambulance with siren screaming pulling in from the county, and our own ambulance called out on a 99,'- Calm is the watchword here, panic must be avoided at all costs. Although our hearts may be beating fiercely and our nerves tensed to the breaking point, our outward appearance has to be one to instill confidence in our patients and all others involved. To this hub of never-ending activity, drama, excitement, and tragedy, we, as students, come with awe and eagerness to practice our skills and learn to cope with emergencies. From childhood our ears pricked up at the sound of a siren, wondering where it was going, whose life was in danger, and if aid arrived in time. Perhaps the ambulance passed us on the street, and immediately, as if by radiation, the thundering of our hearts and the blood pounding through our vessels, seemed to be joining that of the ambulance crew in their race against time. Intermittent with our time spent in the Receiving Ward, was our valuable experience gained in Central Supply and the Dispensary. One never realizes the value and time saved by the use of a Central Supply unit until she works there and observes the sterilization of flasks, syringes, needles, towels, venesection trays, and many other items that are so necessary in a hospital. A week's experience in this much-valued area teaches us to appreciate the work accomplished. Tolerance, compassion, and understanding in addition to knowledge andskill are the in- gredients making up the Dispensary, or Out-Patient-Department. Here come the poor, in need of proper medical treatment, but unable to finance a private doctor. Here we practice true public health in administering aid and through teaching good hygiene. . Now, as we are caught in the rush of wind that blows past us as a racing ambulance speeds to its destination, when the wail of a siren pierces the air and sends chills up our spines, we recall the excitement that we once experienced in our gamble with Life and Death. Many times we had to step from our student nurse role.into that of play- mate, parent, or teacher role. Psychology, tact, wisdom, and patience were needed in giving medi- cations and treatments. We needed to explain why this pill or Mbee sting would help them get better or just why the doctor wanted them to have an enema before surgery, the need for a cast, traction, bedrest, or a fish net. Some of us will remember only the children's ward on third iloorrin the old part of the hos- pital while others will recall moving from the old into the new on seventh Hoor while still others will only remember working in our new department. The change was remarkably delightful. We now have on the East wing separate isolation rooms, a critical ward. and rooms for children ages three to five and six to twelve. The intercommunication system, hi-fidelity set, and air condition- ing are also treasured luxuries. The West wing is for the adolescents and those having their ton- sils removed. Many of us will never forget checking lV's every ten minutes, crushing pills, and mixing them with syrup, filling croupettes, going through isolation dips, suctioning, giving enemas, doing soaks and changing burn dressings, feeding babies and coaxing children to eat, wheelchair races, explaining bedsides, and allaying fears of both child and parent. Along with our experience in childrens ward we spent some time in formula room and pre- mature nursery. Our experiences were varied and interesting. They not only prepared us to be better nurses but more understanding of our patients. EIGHTY 'i .. an l .l i il ru 1, . But they are important words-words that reward and encourage the nurses who hear them. They serve as a small down payment on a tremendous debt that cannot be paid with dollars alone. Nursing today, as in the past, is a profession based on the prin- ciples of unselfish service and devotion to others. Into the making of a career in this vital profession go dedicated teaching, ardent study A and untiring effort. That's why New Holland Machine Company wants to express its gratitude to the young women devoting their lives to keeping America healthy.
