Miss Lilly-Class Advisor ASS PDE Three long years have already PHSSCCI by, And a graduate nurse now am I- Nly student days seemed mighty 101155, And there wasnlt much time for dance and song? But as I stop and glance back into the p-'EISIQ The time really did go very fast. Why, I remember that very first day When none of us knew exactly what to say, And I remember when we gave each other baths, Boy, that was good for lots of Iaughsl Oh yes, the first day that we went on the floor, When we thought we couldn't possibly learn any more. And the parties given us at Christmas and Halloween, I know we all agree that they were pretty keen. Then came all the new things that we had to learn to do, Like giving enemas, inserting catheters and injecting needles too. Oh! something that I canat forget to include Is the series of tests we had, that made life seem so crude. We'll all always remember that extremely glorious night, When one by one we each received our pert little caps of white. After Capping came Diet Kitchen where we Wrote diet after diet, And the problems we had getting Diabetics to eat really were a riot. Our next adventure was the Operating Room where the main problem was sterile technique, And where our attempts at putting up the canopy were very often quite unique. Then came our days in Maternity, where the mothers with their babies were the main attraction, While we..the student nurses. worried about changing diapers, giving bedpans and 7 counting each contraction. Our next twelve weeks were spent in Children's Ward, where vomiting and diarrhea seemed to prevail, 7 Y T 46 , . O And Im sure ue ll all recall Nurse, a drink of water pleasew as their constant wall. By this .time we thought we had experienced everything, but then we Went on affiliation, To sp-ipselplfe us Xtlgiiltieirned like three months of nightmares, but to the others it But all in all I canlt complain. And if I had to, I would do it all over again, For to be a good nurse and help those in need Is worth all the hard work and studying indegd! As I need as much knowledge and experience as I can acquire, In order to become a registered nurse my greatest desire L' 5 By: Ruth Worst Forty-eight 1955-56 INTERNES 1 Left to Right-David L. Shortly l found myself doing daily routines. Catheterizations, enemas, gumco suction, l.V.'s, dressings, BXP, and preps seem to fit into the schedule just as easily as the morning bath l first learned. Then when l was working 3-ll and ll-7 tours, l found that efficiency along with orff ' fl' A ' ' C,E1Il1Zr.t10l'l is as important to the patlentns comfort and progress. I was told I wouldnit like it too well but-I guess they were wrong 'cause I do! As a nurse I found medicine to mean good nursing care with an abundance of patience flavored with smiles. The visions of O-2 tents, bedsides, aspirators, IV7s, and the like fade away as I recall the day Harry, our beloved coronary occlusion, sat out on a chair, the day Lizzie, the little lady with a CVA, walked to the door and back, and the day George, our ulcer patient, received cream soup instead of milk and cream for dinner. I soon learned that medical nursing could be very hard. There were times when we thought we'd never wade through the endless lists of medications, treatments, and bells. Remember those nerve racking mornings that never gave you a chance to get anything done? Then one recalls those long slow evenings when all of a sudden things began to pop-Mary went into a diabetic coma, and little, confused Joe thought he must pack up and go home! . . . yes, it was time to be putting patients to bed but-? l What about the night you had a death and an admission at 1I:3O? How about the day para-typhoid hit Lancaster? We had lots of fun on medical service. I don't think any one of us would give up that experience. We learned how to carry out the basic principles of good bedside nursing care and we also learned much about the worlds most interesting subject- The Patient. Soon I was scrubbing and assist- ing with the Mopsw and setting up the canopy with its instruments and supplies I never thought that Hbreaking suturen and passing instruments would someday be routine for me. From the very first confusing day to the last thrilling moment l realized the important part obstetrics plays in our period of nursing education. I'1l never forget the thrill of watching that first delivery and the tiny white bundle of joy that cried and cried. Bemember the night there was only one empty bed left in maternity. Those full moons. Floor duty was fun. Taking care of ha h used to get under foot. g ppy mot ers and proud fathers who The nursery will always hold a bright spot for me Those little mit . es were so much fun to hold. Changing diapers, taking temps, weighing, getting that last ounce down were daily tasks that held fascination for me. There will always be an obstetrics department and l know a great many students are making plans to work there as graduate nurses. Seventy I WHER E LH? cms ,J , l ia! After visiting hours I enacted my maternal role by consoling the child and finding some toy with which to divert his attention. By instilling strength, discipline, and security I fulfilled my paternal role. As a nurse I became a playmate and friend thus obtaining their respect and co-operation. I helped cure their physical ills by mixing pills with 'cgooeyw cartose, and gave those little Mhee-stingsi' in the form of hypos. To ease the feverish child I spent many eve- nings forcing tea and kool-ade and administering tepid sponge baths. I'11 never forget the GG I received prior to working in polio, also those typhoid boosters which were of value during the para-typhoid epidemic. Dips, gowns, masks -the never ending isolation routine. All this and more was packed into my eight hour Working day on Childrens, Ward. S6I,'0I1f.V-f0I1T EVER wx HULL CME Q33 amz'-1' I axigggul. It was here where I Mshoweredw patients until I was as wet as they were, where I learned to play pinochle with my eyes shut, where I waltzed to the music of Wfhe Yellow Rose of Texaswg where I acquired a new admirer every day, and where I received proposals more than once. Imagine carrying sixteen keys and a whistle around in your pocket. uNow where is that No. I key'?', Too had if you needed it in a hurry. lVIany thanks to the helpful people who helped orient me to my keys. Will I ever hnd my way around this placew, I often wondered. I could always depend on George to escort me to and from classes. Psychiatry, psychology, ward conferences, and assignments certainly kept me occupied for a while. Who knows the difference-paranoid, catatonic, or hebephrenic? They all seemed the same to me. But gradually, Mthe light began to dawnw and I found psychiatric nursing to be interesting and challenging. I even began analyzing myself and diagnosing all the people on the subway and the buses. Never to be forgotten were those frequent parties and gab sessions, when I compared notes with students from the ten other nursing schools. I will always treasure the many new friends I made, and the experiences we shared. How we all enjoyed those exciting shopping trips in down-town Phila., when many of us ex- perienced our first breathless ride on the subway and the HEI . Best of all, I recall those fourteen weekends off and those tri over much too soon. ps to and from Byberry. The hustle and bustle and excitement of duty in the receiving Ward are features of this special training which will be long remembered. Arriving at the dispensary, l was greeted by the familiar figure of Miss Wfolge- muth. A few moments later l was confronted by an unbelievable amount of files. You're a nurse. And your big aim in life is-your patient's good health! No one knows better than you that proper nutrition is part of the story. And that means proper food before, dur- ing and after hospitalization. For your own health's sake as well as your patient's, you believe in good food. And that's one more objective you and New Holland have in common. Perhaps you have seen some of our material promoting the increased use of meat and milk for a healthy country and a strong agriculture. We believe a strong agriculture is part of the picture, too, because it's the farm- er who makes possible the food we need for those 11,000 babies born every day- and for our older-growing population. To keep the farmer strong and able to provide our food-and, like you, to keep all of us healthyhNew Holland is glad to join in the campaign to win good health through good food. i 'I rl X if t . . . :La -f Drunk more mrlk ti S SZ Eat more meat for a healthy countrg and a strong agriculture Du-gud and Produced by NEW HOLLAND IR the Publ.: Intense Nzw HCLLAND Hrst: in Grassland Parrningl New Holland Machine Company, New Holland, Pennsylvania l One hundred six I o Your Good Healt I r The United Gas Improvement Co. . . .
