TWO ON s 425-4 a 4.5 'I DR. JOHN D. HELM, JR. I swear by Appollo Physician, by Asclepius, by Health, by Heal-Afll, and by all the god and goddesses, that according to my ability and judgment, I will keep this oath and stipulation: to reckon him who taught me this Art equally dear to me as my parents, and share my substances with him and relieve his necessities if required. To regard his offspring as on the same footing with my own brothers and teach them this art if they should wish to learn it, without fee or stipulation, and that my precept, lecture and every other mode of in- struction, I will impart a knowledge of the Art to my own sons and to them of my teachers and to disciples bound by stipulation, and oath, according to the law of medicine, but to none others. If it is possible for the many principles and virtues emphasized by the Hippocratic Oath to be embodied in a single individual, the graduating class of 1955 has selected as the fulfillment of these ideals one whom we through the course of our training, have come to know and appreciate. At the conclusion of three years, we have had the opportunity to observe many, but there remains one, high in ideals and outstanding in practice, who has fostered in us the desire to excel and renewed in us much needed courage. Now, we have come to the parting of the ways - where each one must pursue alone her own conception of attainment and ultimate happiness. When the path becomes steep and dim, difficulties loom up insurmountable and courage falters, may the beacon of hope that guided us through our student days restore in us the courage of our own convictions that we may continue with renewed faith. At such a time as this, words fail to convey the true feelings that were wont to be expressed in deep appreciation. Witli these thoughts in mind, we entrust our book in humble dedication. THIRTY FIVE CLASS I-Iisfroav September 9, 1952-This was the beginning of a new and different life for 69 girls as we mounted our steps of opportunity. The first few days we started classes with a stack of books which necessitated two trips up three flights of stairs. October 9, '52-Our first uniforms the blue smocks were a great asset as we entered the wards and started becoming professional nurses. The halloween party was a great success. Participants of our class were dressed as the characters in Cheaper by the Dozen and captured first prize. Our first Christmas dance, The Winter Whirl' was quite a thrill as we whirled about to the music of Eddie Humpf's Orchestra. December 20, '52-We were off for two weeks Christmas vacation. We won- dered what we would do with two whole weeks but, my, how the time flew. Back again, after two joyous weeks, to start off the New Year with giving injec- tions to each other, nevertheless, we are still friends. The Valentine Tea, sponsored by our class, was the first get-together of our moth- ers and new friends. 'Twas the night of March 19, 1953 when 64 of us proudly received our caps, which meant to us one more milestone reached. This also was the year we celebrated the 50th Anniversary of our school. Hurrah! Classes over and what do we see in the near future - vacation! Then September unfolded with its many beautiful colors - a rosy color for us - we were now intermediates and anxiously we awaited the arrival of our little sisters. Christmas came with bells ringing joyously and our first experience of Christmas in the hospital. Christmas caroling added greatly to the happiness of both patients and ourselves. A New Year began with resolutions to do even better in the coming year as many of us entered Diet Kitchen, Operating Room, Maternity, Pediatrics, Receiving Ward and Dispensary. Time flew and much was gained for our pages of history this year. Fall came and thus September bestowed on us the honor of becoming seniors and with it the black velvet bands were an added attraction to our caps. Never will be forgotten the three months at Byberry 9 unforgetable three months of a lifetime. Spring came with long awaited graduation and commencement. Yes, and those beautiful, white uniforms and dainty caps. We will never forget the past three years, some of the most precious years of our lives, and the experiences they have brought before us. 1HIl!TY IX CLASS WILL To our many friends at the Lancaster General Hospital, we, the Senior Class of 1955 bein in our rightful minds, willingly bequeath, not our money, for we have none, but all our P0555-55lOA5 whih were so indispensable to us as students. CAPPING THE NURSES CAP Upon her head, you see a cap, so crisp and snowy white. 'Tis the symbol of a nurse, you see, to the ill, a ray of light. ,Tis the sigh of understanding and the ability to heal 'Tis a sign that fever soon will fade as will the pain you feel. It signifies an abundance of knowledge well attained It signihes a mind alert and lingers deftly trained. The cap is a sign that she's come to serve unselfishly and freely For health is steadily regained with treatments she's applied. The cap is a sign of expert care administered with pride And the care she renders, is carried out elliciently and ideally. 'Tis a sign of love and kindness and tender sympathy. A sign of sacrifices made to serve humanity. The cap denotes many hours spent and many lessons learned With patience and sincerity is the only way its earned. The cap does more than designate the time that's spent at learning It designates the happiness ol' comforting the yearning. P. All around the nurses home we wondered, while we were there, For there were many friends to meet-many ex- periences to share. When we were nursing catatonics and schizoph- renics in a psychiatric way. Sharing and benefiting by the lessons Learned each day. All the work was interesting, everywhere we went, We all look at affiliation as three short months well spent. We were one hospital among the many-repre- sented there. Three full months of day duty-no night duty or E. D. care. Fourteen weekends to ourselves-We didn't like to see it end. Eventually back to L. G. H. we traveled-knowb edge to lend. All the work was interesting, everywhere we went. We all look at affiliation as three short months well spent. 'Y qwlvii' .X J if J i 64. II IIIY I X .:..Lti.Q:.a13:. .. There are many more things wie can recall Of the stat operation-the emergency ca-ll We had visions of sleeping in our good beds But still we kept vigil with weary heads.
