Director of Nursing TO THE CLASS OF 1952: When you entered our School you chose Nursing as a career. Actually,.Nursing is a great vari- iety of careers. Now, about to graduate, you are choosing that one career in Nursing, Wl11Cl1 YOU can Serve most effectively and in which you can find greatest personal satisfaction. To you who have taken the important step of becoming a nurse, the World is beckoning. What sort of a nurse! Reliability and all it implies in honesty, loyalty, and alertness would certainly be the outstanding quality that physicians and other nurses expect of a nurse-but patients look for more. Con- scientious performance of duties is that intangible something that makes the truly successful nurse. The quality is hard to define. It is the sort of devotion to duty which keeps the captain of a great ship on lhls bridge 48 hours, without sleep, when danger threatens. It is something more, for a nurse is not dealing with ships, but with the human body-the temple of the mind and of the soul. It is a spiritual quality that patients recognize instantly, hospital directors long to find in every nurse, and that can most simply and unsentimentally be called interest plus. .Henry Van Dyke's Work expresses an attitude that seems particularly desirable in the field of Nursing and your chosen career: This is my Work. My blessing, not my doom, Of-all who live, I am the one by Whom This Work can best be done in the right Way. Will you be that sort of professional nurse? If so, God bless each one of you. ' en. How often have We, as dazed, excited canopy nurses heard these Words and thought to ourselves that We'd never have that canopy ready for th-e eight o'clock op? Those busy days in the O.R., when We'd stand at the canopy from 6:30 in the morning until 1:00 in the afternoon, when no one, absolutely no one, cared Whether we liv-ed or died, the place where we Went off duty with our pockets bulging with torn gloves because We were just too tired to patch themg where all we ever got accomplished Was changing from uniform to scrub gown and back again. After the excitement and drama of the O.R., Working on a surgical floor seemed dull and very quiet. However, the pre-op. and post-op. treatment of these patients, We found, is just as important as the operation itself. SEIPLE, RI. D. Chief of Medical Service Remember Harry? Every student nurse can remember literally hundreds of out- standing, ever-returning, true-to-the-bone medical patients. Men's and Women's Medical would just not be the same without them. Here's where you discharge a patient one week and admit him again the next, whore a patient under sixty is a youngsterg and where bed sides are a necessity. Gn these floors a good knowledge of Materia Medica comes in handy, for probably the most important assignment here is giving out baskets-full of pills q. 4 hrs. each day. Passing stomach tubes, doing paracenteses, starting nasal suction, and giving nitrogen-mustard are all in the days' schedule. In short, medicine can be summed up in the following lyrics: M-is for the Million medications. E-is for Each time you change a bed. D-is for the D-ear 'ole ones like Harry. I-is for the Insulin, Peters said. C-is for the Confusion always present. I-is for the I.V.'s they make sub-q. N-is for the Nurse they're always calling. Chief of Pediatrics The department of fun - until you get a spoonful of Cartose shoved in your hair or you find yourself alone on BD. with nine kids to feed and a stat appendectomy going up. Chi1dren's Wfard has many nice reliefs from ordinary medical and surgical floors: for example, the chairs during the morning report and the absence of decubitis ulcer care. Here isolation technic reigns supreme. The practical side of all those Com- municable Disease lectures manifests itself in the many dips, the gowns and masks, and the counting incubation periods. The kids literally run' the place. You have only to open the door to the left of the elevator on third floor and a rush of children's laughter mingled with the cries of hungry babies tells you it must be Kids VVard . The two year old's trusting look as you give him his first hypo , two chubby hands reaching out for you as you approach a crib, the baby's squeal of delight as you show him his bottle - these are only a few of the things which make your twelve weeks in Childrens, VVard some of the best loved weeks of training. i I Q s ww M, . This was the night we put behind us six months of con- centrated studies, Worries, and tears. For the first time We Wore our bibs and displayed our capes. But, best of all, we received our caps, the symbol of our profession g and for the first time, we actually felt like nurses. Now we could assume greater responsibilities, such as giving medications, which included the dreaded hypodermic and the intra-muscular injection. No longer were We probies g those days were gone forever! Having reached the first milestone in our training, We faced two and a half years which were to be years We Would never forget. The night of May 20, 1952, amid much excitement and anticipation, we bade farewell to our blue and White stripes as We donned our Whites . Our student cap was replaced by the long-awaited graduate cap and our School of Nursing pin was placed on our uniform, to ever remind us of our training days. But th-e crowning moment of all was when our diplomas were placed into our eager hands. Memories of this momentous occasion will forever be with us. . . 'Z'-. :qu Eh' f',',f?f?2gf? Q. We feel that it's value has been appreciated by many since its beginning three years ago. This fact Was proven by the attendance at our Christmas Concert presented With the Franklin and Marshall Glee Club at Hensel Hall. Certainly, the songs that were rendered at both the Capping and Commencement Exercises were Welcome additions to each of the programs. Hard work, patience, and faithfulness were in evidence at our Tuesday night rehearsals, held in the class room of th-e Fondersmith Nurses Home. Let's all remember with pride the attainments that have been made, and wish our chorus good fortune for the coming years. The time Pat Leibley, our procedure wise probie, showed her wide-eyed classmates the art of boiling thermometers on Ground Floor? What a first charge slip to write out! Pat Hackman's mopping up 2nd O.R. after a stat? Nice of you to help out the porters, Pat. The time Doris George went to chapel at 4:30 a.m.? She can't help she turned the alarm ahead instead of back one hour to change from E.S.T. to Day Light Saving Time. Lou Lambert's first starch bath? Sure, Lou knew how to do it! Fifteen minutes later, our Men's Med. head nurse finds her diligently following the recipe for corn starch pudding while bent over a hot kettle in the kitchen. Incidently, Lou, we don't eat starch baths! That twelve midnight stat op. of Joan Frey's? Joan, after being thrust in front of the canopy, promptly fainted into that sterile pile of draping sheets and, as if this weren't enough, climaxed it by falling backward and knocking over the basin stands. T'hat's one way of getting the doctor on bended knees. Charlie's going on E.D. on maternity in her clean starched uniform-only to find that this was her night off? ' Howard's Sunday morning church services in the O.R.? Shirley Geib's long drawn-out procedure for discharging patients? Just wave good-bye as they walk out of the ward! That first I.M. Pat Bare gave? Pat, with the syringe perfectly poised in her hand and with that confident manner of all preclinicals, came down with a mighty jab-right into her own thumb. Has it healed yet, Pat? Mrs. Case's specific instructions on how to fold back the counterpane-the first day you entered the nurses home? When you were confused concerning which one was the patient? That temperature you took on the patient's visitor wasn't elevated, was it, Ulrich? And Mary Gerlach really was feeling alright when she put the patient's mother to bed in the labor room on Maternity. Your first death-on night duty? Ginnie Slabach's apron-after she spilled the results of an S.S.E. over herself? The time Nancy Reitz assisted Dr. Appleyard in Cysto. room? Quick-acting Nancy got the urine specimen out of the way in a fiash-even if it was down the doctor's back! That morning report of Betty Mark's on Child- ren's Ward? Everything was going quite smoothly until the bottle of hydrogen peroxide exploded in her pocket. No hair bleaching that day for Betty. Those ambulance rides with Charlie when you fell off the seat going around a corner and the intern lay sprawled in front of you? Careful Shirley Ament spilling urine on a vis- itor's hat. Bet his head was reeking 'til he got home, Your first morning in the O.R. when Dr. Pontius gruffly asked your name and you shrank back in fear and trembling? The time Marian Wenger tried to economize her time on Maternity E.D.? Cautiously and care- fully she placed her six o'clock meds, bottles of mineral oil and milk of mag, a pitcher of water and crackers on one big tray. It worked fine! She had discovered a time saving device! But then she set the tray on top of a pillow. Mineral oil over the pillow, over the chair, on the floor . . . mixed with ergotrate, feosol, milk of mag, crackers and broken glass. What time did you get off duty that night, Marian? Inquisitive Leaman, asking the Nursing Arts instructor if there was a difference between peren- nial and perineal? The time Elva Groff' made rounds with the minister? Kathryn Harnish's diligent search of the O.R. and supply cupboards for Fallopian tubes? Let us know when you find them, Harnish. Those endless weeks of E.D. on Maternity with every Tuesday night off. The time B.J. Myers and her date were stopped by a traffic cop for speeding? The reason B.J.'s date gave? He was rushing her to the hospital. With an acknowledging look at B.J. he left them by. What the policeman didn't know was that they were only trying to make the 10:00 curfew. l - '.- .g-,gg--1-as u--q-r 1 gr- ff 11.- Y,-,.3,',,.x-in ' .f .I . New Holland knows how much industry is indebted to the men and women in white who are helping win this fight. And we pay tribute here to those nurses who are graduating into a lifetime of unselfish service. I l NEW HOLLAND MACHINE CCMPANY l LANCASTER New HOLLAND ' V w f c. g.y,v.e7s-arf.:-f...s , ' - ' V D.
