September 13, 1948 found 54 bright-eyed probies eagerly awaiting to start a new, ex- citing, heroic adventure. By the end of their first week their view of nursing became a sober one as class assignments grew heavier and the responsibilities of nursing seemed weighty. Delving into our many books We learned the technical names of bones, muscles, and bacteria, the inter-relationship of the physical and emotional, and our responsi- bilities in applying all this knowledge to our patients whom we worked with on the floor. Our new undertaking seemed immense. For- tunately, not everything was work, we did take time for social life. Our big sisters, the Seniors, gave a tea in our honor. By October we were making beds and giving baths to patients. The social calendar proposed a Hallowe'en party, which was given by the Intermediates and enjoyed by all. November brought a Thanksgiving tea and our first holiday. December with its many exams was eagerly welcomed in anticipation of the holiday season and our much-needed two weeks of vacation. As a good send-off, we were well entertained at the Christmas party and other surprise events. A back-to-earth sensation ushered in the new year as we dug deep into our springs of knowledge and hoped to pass more finals. The first milestone was reached when we laid aside the role of a probie and became Juniors. This was climaxed with the capping exercise held on March 13, 1949. The traditional May dance was held. The crowning of the May Queen tied us closer to the upper classmen as two of our class- mates became members of the Queen's court. How we welcomed the end of classes and another two weeks of vacation. Summer events included doggie roasts and picnics. It was during this summer that we saw the beginning of the realization of the Greater Lancaster General Hospital. September 1949-one year over and two more to gog classes for us and the realization gig-A that we were Intermediates as we saw pre- clinicals circulating through the dining-room and class rooms. Social functions, Big and little sister tea, Halloween party, and weekly Glee club prac- tice helped to lift our noses off the grindstone. Then our Thanksgiving tea Cwith Priscilla Alden and John Aldrich servingj Christmas dance, the Christmas party, Christmas carol- ing with the addition of holiday time off, all added to the excitement of the season. March found us the hostesses of the Senior class as we entertained them at Sigmund Romberg's concert at McCaskey High School. By this time many of us had learned to like or dislike various forms of special training as O.R.g diet kitchen, maternity, children's ward and receiving ward. Commencement helped us realize that in one year our celebration would come. Again vacations were hailed with much anticipation. This summer found improvements for the nursing school. This included new labora- tories, and classrooms, more nurses' homes and redecoration of our present ones. The building of our new hospital was progressing well. September 1950, found us, 46 of us, Seniors. We proudly added black bands to our stu- dent caps 'and determined to make ourselves worthy of them. This last and final year of training found us taking turns afliliating at Philadelphia State Hospital and struggling with year book assignments. What fun-moving to other homes, living with new roommates and learning to know each other better as we struggled and tri- umphed through training. These years seemed long as we looked ahead. Behind us we know it as having been full of difficulties, which resulted in success, growth and achievement. We have achieved, but we see greater things ahead to be achieved. Our chosen career is one in which we must continue to grow to fulfil its require- ments. With determination we entered it, with hope and courage we continued in this, our nursing profession. SKRAMUSKY if U ' Noam Where you learn what happens when: you hand Dr. Pontius an A gown- you make a huge stack of counted sponges wrong-you scratch your nose the first day you're standing alone at the canopy and while you're talking to Miss Alexander-you knot your last suture just as the instrument nurse calls for it-they discover that you don't eat eggs for breakfast-you untie Dr. Appel's gown before the operation is finished-you're the circulating nurse opening the gloves and Dr. Pontius discovers that his were put up with Biosorb-you're at the canopy and drop a basin in the middle of an operation and it keeps bouncing up and down on the floor but no one has time to pick it up-your hands shake while you're holding out the iodine prep forceps to Dr. Pontius- a bug flies into the O. R. while you're circulating and they tell you to take care of it -you don't know what brassiere ,might mean-they call for the basin in a Caesarean section and you carry a specimen basin over-you've scrubbed 8 minutes and are entering the O. R. to relieve at the canopy and fall flat on your face--you autoclave the gloves an.hour and a half-you're told to relieve at first O. R. canopy and you get into second somehow and send that student out-you cut your finger and glove breaking sutures for a .thyroidectomy of Dr. Pontius's and drip blood all over the canopy floor-you put the needle patch on upside down-they tell you Miss Ney wants to see you and you think they're kidding but this time they're really not.
