The first half of the twentieth century has seen in all phases of life the upheaval resulting from two world wars. Nursing and Nursing Education, like most other branches of education, could not escape the impact of changing emphases. You are fortunate to be completing your basic nurse course at a time when Schools of Nursing must provide both technical and liberal education- form principles that will help to safeguard the personality of each indi- vidual and provide for necessary discipline and efficiency to meet the crisis of life and death. You, as future Professional Nurses will help to mould this careful thinking and planning. Again, you are fortunate to graduate at a time that Nursing must ad more boldly. It must have a mind and it must speak it clearly and forcefully. It must initiate more and follow less. Your profession serves the health of the people, it is a profession that is closest to the people. The Nurses of yesterday did not forget-they are challenging you, The Nurse of Tomorrow. You can ing a goal for tomorrow. Congratulations-Best Wishes-M tomorrow. now see why I say, you are fortunate in hav- ay God speed you on to your goal of Edythe Gring Kistler, R.N., B.S. We in the Administration of the hospital and the School of Nursing must point with pride to the accomplishments ot the nurses who have received their nursing education within these walls. While many ot you will not continue actively in nursing, it is my hope that you will continue your interest in matters ot public health and take active part in matters of the health and welfare of your respective communities-a privilege and a duty for which you are well pre- pared. Then you will have your yearbook and two dead editors. A yearbook is a tremendous project. Cooperation on the part of every class member and the interests of the other students are the basic factors which lead to success. Forgotten dead lines, the frequent response of- Oh, I simply can't, and the inability to obtain the proper equip- ment, undoubtedly make barriers that at times seem unsurmountable. The purpose of the Langenhos is to compile in a limited amount of space the memories that the seniors wish to cherish and a tie of friendship to the underclassmen. l ,. STUDENT COUNCIL Within our years this group has made great progress toward a more efficient organization. The revision ofthe handbook brought more privileges for the students thus resulting in a happier student body. The main objectives of the association are to establish self-government under an honor system, to unite the student body, to develop a sense of personal responsibility and loyalty for the school of nursing, to advance the highest ideals of nursing and the nursing profession. Landisville, Pa xiii: 'Tea for Two BIG AND LITTLE SISTER TEA Did you write to your little sister? How often we heard this question echoed and re-echoed during the summer, just before the last class of preclinicals entered. For, you see, each senior selected one or two little sisters from the list of future nurses whom we wanted to welcome to our family. It was the duty and privilege of each one of us to write to our little ones, giving them some idea of the routine here and suggesting some very handy articles to bring along. When their big day of arrival came we went over to Fondersmith home, to meet them and their new found friends and introduced them to our friends. The first Friday after their arrival here, September 16, we gave a Big and Little Sister Tea. This was held in the living room of Duke Street Nurses' Home with Mrs. Hartman and Mrs. Mueller serving. The big sisters ac- companied their little sisters, in this way they became acquainted, and each learned to know more girls in the other class. We have enjoyed having little sisters and hope we may be of every possible help to them during their re- maining training days at the Lancaster General Hospital. ,UL '15'.,: +A T. c - UTE8 PA I W lsiuilmiuiic mmiiiimi. iimiimc, ..,. l.A1x:cixls1LR RO 1 A -1 c It.l.., llIIlll4I'i - 'hmm i' rw Underneafh fhe Arches .V 1 up , , , I W , 1. 4 Us 1' 3' , . ,1 ' '? M Otto Courtesy to all. SANTA HIMSELF CAN YOU TOP THIS? Doris Lefever, who was circulating for an opera- tion, suddenly remembered she must call a nurse to come for the patient. Hurriedly, she rushed .to the nearest phone, picked up the receiver and said, Will you please send a patient to the O.R. for your nurse? i The Operating Room was the origin of many top-hits. Nancy Shellenberger who was scrubbed at the canopy attempted to empty the drum of sterile gowns. To prevent making more than one trip to the canopy, she stacked the sterile gowns high and in her attempt to keep the neat stack from falling, she held it with her chin. Was your chin sterile, Shelly? Red Long remembered one of the instruments because they were a girl's name. Result-she called Allis Hemostats Sallys. Martha Eshleman vigorously went to work to scrub the O.R. floors with a hand scrub brush and hot soapy water. Did you expect to trade jobs with Howard, Eshleman? More than one of our group evidently got cold while standing at the canopy because at the end of the morning they were wearing three or four O.R. gowns. We also had a very efficient damp-duster who dusted the birdie so thoroughly that it landed on the floor in a thousand dust free pieces. Who was it that finally realized that white lines, on the blackboard do not come off regardless of type of cleanser used? Diet Kitchen also hit the top of the meter -as Nancy Shellenberger fell over the lard can as she walked out of the refrigerator carrying a tray full of lovely salads. Result-Shelly, lettuce, pineapple, mayonnaise, and dishes on one pile. Joyce Wilson made exceptionally good use of all the dust pans and brushes. Kate Edelman spilled all the little cream pitchers in the refrigerator. Lois Barnhart sent raw eggs to all the recipients of D.K. trays. Anna Metzler, thinking she had a large amount of pureed carrots mixed the ones she had just pureed with a large container full of Lucille's apricot pudding. Geesey worked hard making an appetizing cherry jello salad and found she had forgotten to seed the cherries. A certain dietician was recipient of a free milk bath just as one of the students was trying to make a good impression on her first day. Ask Bumbaugh what she and Eshbach did after the ureed five boxes of asparagus and still didn't yhife enough pureed food for their fifty diets. The first evening in the Delivery Room proved quite exciting to some of us, especially to Eshbach who dropped the placenta basin as she was about to rest it on the table. Unfortunately, it left its Stain on the supervisor who had to secure a fresh set of clothing before she could continue her evening as. sistance. ' Geesey, giving her first douche to a patient was very much concerned about her technique, so much in fact that she forgot to put the patient on the bedpan when she finally did get to giving it. And then there's the one who catheterized for residual and forgot to ask the patient to void first. Metzler, as a probie was working on Women's Med. when a patient called for a nurse. Hurriedly Metzler told her she'd call one for her immediately. Ask Dutch Frederick about the time she took a supposedly expectant mother to the D.R. and a few days later she delivered gall-stones on W.S.W. How our hands burned when Dussinger used Carbolic Acid instead of aqueous Zepharin for the dips in the O.R. Stevie, how did all the glove covers get in the laundry chute? It couldn't have been that you tried to get out of washing them, could it? How confusing are two nurses working on the same department with the same last name. Ask Alice Keller about the time Mrs. Dings asked for the graduate fmeaning the nursej and Alice brought the measuring graduate. On their next to the last day in Byberry, Herfllef and Himmelwright became confused over the event of coming homeg so confused that they were unable to differentiate between the colored and white race. Wondering why everyone looked so odd they found themselves an hour later working in the white build- ing instead of the colored building. It looks like Byberry made you color-blind. Do you remember how frightened Mrs. Case is of men. Well, ask Boone about the first day she Came in training and showed her father the nice room she was going to live in. Realizing the need for a good floor scrubbing, Del Leaman thought she would do her Paff bl' flooding Room 3 in 518 at 1:30 A.M. Result, one broken washbowl, Bumbaugh in the cellar hunting the water inlet, Wilson mopping floors, and Bw- baker and Eshleman needing a moving van. We wonder if Mort Hashinger's abil.ity.l0 dissect cats in Anatomy class will be any indication of her success as a mortician. . Mrs. Weirich seemed especially pleased with 2 students test paper and wrote what she thought Was Good The student came back in amazement and asked if she really meant what she had written. The first couple of months found us with our noses in books and more books, classes and more classes. Did we learn our Anatomy? You bet we did! QI wonder if our instruc- tor is quite so certain?j I U 1 Everyone, we're sure can never forget the first day on duty-giving our first hospital bath to a patient or should we say commiserated patient? No, we couldn't have been that bad! u In the very merry month of May we went to graduation exercises, the seniors getting their hard, yet well earned diplomas. We were still just probies-nobodies-but our graduation was coming someday too! August vacation came and we went-we came and vacation went. Those four weeks surely did go fast. Were we eager to come back? Sure thing! September and more probies --not seventeen but nearly twice as many and these constituted the other half of our class. We welcomed them with open arms and gladly handed down to them those first months - v of books and more books, classes and more classes, worries and wonders and frets. ' ' ' ' ' We were no Beautiful October at last and in that month a big day-capping exercises. longer greenhorn probies but distinguished juniors. Did our caps make us feel bigger or just taller? With the traditional capping also goes the intermediates tradition to initiate, so not many days later we experienced it. What a silly lot of fun. Christmas comes but once a year and when it comes it brings good cheer. Cheer for the probies of our class for they were on vacation, but we were working. Some of us did get a glimpse of our Christmas trees at home-some of us did not. March already-a year gone by and another capping exercise. The lower section of this class were no longer probies but juniors now. Then we were all one happy family with caps on our heads and vows in our hearts. As the months went on we still studied hard and worked hard. Still feeling a little timid and new as we went to the new floors to work-diet kitchen, operating room, maternity, and children's ward. Hallowe'en parties, Christmas dances and parties, May dances, the banquet we gave the seniors at Wigginsf Hot summer months with uniforms so cool, winter months with capes so warm, drilling and blasting for the new boiler house, class pictures fsmile for Mr. Shelleyj, moving and lugging your junk into another nurse's home, getting new roommates, holiday teas, swimming at the Y, baseball, getting little sisters, some a little twitterpated and spring not even near. Holiday time, why doesn't some one invent more of it? Forty-four of us struggled hard for three long years. Come to think of it those ye21rS weren't so long after all, nor did we struggle half as hard as we like to exaggerate. It'S fun to look back and talk and laugh about the many happenings and the long waited and looked for graduation. I'm sure not a soul in this class of 1950 need be reminded of our three glorious years in training by words written and titled Class History. We each and all shall still be making history as long as we live, maybe not the Columbus kind, but we shall still be achieving and pursuing in our nursing profession, and that, as 21 whole, is History. jean Schmieder and Evelyn Stout. ,, , .N,,.....- Q-T-7 4--.W t V -fn' Silt! A Probie came within our gates Tried with ambition and fearg She'd felt the need to come and serve The rich, the poor, those far and near. The first few weeks Hew swiftly by, She'd found an adventure quite new. She gladly studied hour on hour, Wasn't she one of the chosen few? The winter slipped by and on came March. Her work at last brought a reward so bright, For on her head was placed a cap So beautifully crisp and white. And as the summer with all its heat Broke the spirit of this dear young girl, She learned the truth, this isn't play- Little time for society's whirl. She bravely started another year, The year that passes in merciful haze, Yet she steadfastly did her best, And emerged triumphant, ready for senior days. The end is in sight, but no- As she opens her eyes she will find That this is just the beginning, She's learned to be thoughtful and kind. And now she stands on the threshold Of a world so gloriously new, She'd given her life, strength and tears. Was this girl ever you? Gloria F. Schimp APPRECIATION ....
