Whittaker, our Nursing Arts Instructor, who has so faithfully given of her time, and who has unselfishly served to make us better nurses, we, the Senior Class of 1947, sincerely and humbly dedicate this Volume of the LanGe1iHos. 7 C71 flfmae .4 m er 'knki' Because the day that stretches out for me Is full of busy hours, I come to Thee To ask Thee, Lord, that Thou Wilt see me through The many things that I may have to do. Hero me to make my beds the smoothest Way. He L3 me to make more tempting every tray. He 9 me to sense When pain must have relief. Hep me to deal With those borne down with grief. Hel me to take to every patient's room 3 The Light of Life to brighten up the gloom. Hep me to bring to every soul in fear The sure and steadfast thought that Thou art near And if today, or, if tonight, maybe, Some patients in my care set out to sea To face the great adventure We call death, Sustain them, Father, in their parting breath. Help me to live throughout this livelong day As one Who loves Thee Well, dear Lord, I pray. And when the day is done, and evening stars Shine through the dark above the sunset bars When Weary quite, I turn to seek my rest, Lord, may I truly know I've done my best, -RUTH WINANT WHEELER ..4, Z '1- W -Qinkliamixlg ' Z 4 Q N' . WALTER BLANKENSHIP Chief 'kit The intelligent and Well-organized nursing service of The Lancaster General Hospital has been a major factor in the development of the hospital's medical service, and in maintaining that service at its present high level. It has always been the policy of our physicians to give personal instruction to the nursing staff. lVe try to meet any request made to us by the school of nursing in the matter of practical instruction, or in lectures dealing with the various specialties of the healing art. Through the years We have Watched the nursing school develop and keep abreast of the rapid strides that medicine has made. Our department takes pride in any share it may have had in turning out the calibre of nurse who rates with the very best. Though a nurse has long hours, tedious duties, and heavy Work, she reaps her reward in a vital service, which is Well appreciated by our hospital and our community. -WALTER D. FARMER Chief ttf Skilled, conscientious, and Well-trained nursing care is more essential in obstetrical nursing than in any other branch. Here, as in no other field of nursing, the nurse always has two lives to consider. This is true at the onset of pregnancy, throughout the pregnancy, labor, and the puerperiuin. The de- cision as to what is best for the one and Will not interfere with the other is often a diflicult one to make. The physical strain in abnorinal cases is often attended With grave and serious syniptoins. These conditions soinetinies last for a period of several inonths. Coinpanionship, attention, and care of a syinpathetic nurse is often the greatest aid in affecting a cure in such cases, more so than the services rendered by the physician niany times. The well-trained, thoughtful, conscien- tious obstetrical nurse is by far the greatest asset to the obstetrician in caring for any difficult or coniplicated obstetrical case. . -C. R. This practice applies to all types of patients. There are a few rules in reference to ear, nose and throat patients that I would like to emphasize: 1. VVatch the post-operative tonsil patient for bleed- ing. Count the number of times the patient swallows per minute and note the color of the skin. There may be no visible evidence as the patient may be swallow- ing the blood. 2. Note the rapidity and volume of the pulse. 3. Never leave the anesthetized patient until com- pletely conscious and do not assign this responsibility to the parents of the patient who may be present. The general principles of good surgical nursing apply to most other patients in this department. DR. T. C. SHOOKERS -T. C. SHGGKERS, MD. 0 i,fi.z.....z.W l 'k'k'k Good nursing is half the battle. Qphthalmic nursing requires in addition to the usual quali- fications of a successful nurse, certain technical and practical knowledge of ophthalmology. Special emphasis is placed on g00d Opeffiltiflg TOOH1 technique and post-operative nursing care, especially of the aged and children. I 3111 happy to Observe the good qualities and excellent work displayed by the nurses in our Ophthalmic Department, I commend them most highly. -XV. H. LEFEVRE, M.D. DR. W. H. LEFEVRE Chief .. MEMoRlEs or TRAINING 'k'k'k If at any time you wish to know the defi- nition of a hernia don't forget to ask JC311 Hess. Miss McKay did, and this is the defi- nition she received: Farmers get them. Chronic alcoholics sure can give a nurse the creeps. Peg Keveney can give you 3 seed story about one. One night she crawled through Men's Medical lVard on her hands and knees because an alcoholic gave her that come hither look. Just one of Becker's embarrassing mo- ments: In her characteristic, jovial spirit she rushed into a patient's room singing f'Ding Bat, the Singing Oat. In turning around to place the thermometer in the patient's mouth she discovered that the visitor who was pres- ent was a minister offering a prayer. VVith a flushed face and a sheepish look she replaced the thermometer and left the room just in time to prevent herself from exploding in their presence. f'What's her first name?', asked Dr. Pon- tius of Pearl Groff who was circulating in the operating room during a Thyroidectomy operation. Misunderstanding the question, she answered, 'fPearl. Dr. Pontius then pro- ceeded to have the patient respond by calling Pearl! Pearl! Pearl! No response. Pearl at last realizing her mistake said very ex- citingly, Noi No! Nolf' and running to the patient's chart she obtained the proper name to which the patient responded. Only those who know Dr. Pontius can imagine his reac- tion to such an episode. Pearl sure had her Htimesi' in the OR, One busy morning she was hurriedly tying gowns and opening gloves for the doctors when all of a sudden, due to the wet floor by the alcohol dips, her feet slipped from under her and she found herself lying flat on the floor with all the doctors' heads turned her WSLY- She quickly gathered herself together, arose and bravely replied 'fNo', to the in- evitable and much asked question f'Did you hurt yourself?,' in spite of the fact that she felt a bit scuffed and sore and not only a little embarrassed. Anna Mary Mohler in her early Junior days: What's that horrible stuff? asked an excited patient who had started to rinse his mouth. Upon investigating she discovered she had given him Phenol solution instead of astringent mouthwash. XV as her face red and no Hours Off that day for her! Mary Snyder very cheerfully carried the little baby girl into the niother's room when the gentleman who was standing beside the patient's bed said, Throw it out, it's no goodf' Mary, rather surprised at such an odd statement, looked up and said, f'Why? Don't you like it? Did you want a boy? Then the patient, rather embarrassed, spoke up and said, 'fHe's my doctor. 'fOh, Pm sorry,', said Snyder and left the room. Another one on Mary. llvhen she was a 'fprobie and giving a patient a back-rub one afternoon she couldn't understand why her hands felt so sticky. She then discovered that she was using ginger ale instead of alcohol. Maternity is enough to make anyone con- fused and absentminded. One evening while on ED., Mary Harnish, wanting to make a call, rushed to the telephone, quickly picked up the receiver and said, f'Elevator.', Diet kitchen is another place of hard work, confusion and mistakes. Ask Charlie about the time she spilled cranberry sauce all over her shoes and stockings, or ask Munnna about the time she let fall a gallon can of apple- sauce on the refrigerator floor and it splashed all over her, under her and around her. Then there's Groff who politely poured chicken gravy down the front of her bib and apron, and Wisman who stepped in the butter bucket, Pcs Keveney who poured a quart of egg whites down the drain. Ada Ross who dropped a tray of casseroles, and Erb who used powdered Sugar for her White sauce instead of flour. c'Why is that batter so thin? asked Miss Godshalk as Mumma was pouring it over the pears and about to place then1 in tl1e oven. f'Are you sure you usetl the right amounts? '4Yes, Miss Godshalk, 1,111 sure. One quart of milk, 6 cups of flour, 6 cups of eggs antl -? 4'What? asked Miss Godshalk, 6 cups, itls 6 eggs not 6 cups. Ext-itedly, Mu1111na picks up the recipe card and in consternation reatls aright-6 eggs. 'fYou'll have to do it over, Ilm afraidf' said Miss Gotlshalk. Nancy lllenger was very glad that her apricot whip was just about finished and ready to dish when, alas! along comes Miss Taylor and tastes it. Miss lYenger, what ever tlid you put in that?? Nothing, but what the recipe called for,'l replied Nancy. Well, where did you get the powderetl sugar you put in? inquired Miss Taylor. HE LIFE STORY of the Lancaster General Hospital began in 1893 in a small house on Queen Street. At the end of the first year, the rudimentary medical staff had cared for fifty-one patients. Today, more than a half century later, the General Hospital-widely known as an excellent and progressive institution-frequently admits more patients in a day than it treated in the Whole first year of its existence. As our city has grown and matured, so has the Lancaster General Hospital. And through the years, it has never faltered, never failed, as an effective community Weapon against illness and disease. We are deeply grateful to the fine staff and the civic-spirited Board of Directors of the Lancaster General Hospital for their selfless, en- during concern for the public Welfare, On this anniversary, We offer congratulations . . . and thanks.
