The fire fighters and e- quipment from six commu- nities including Bluffton, Un- iondale, Preble, Liberty, Petroleum, and Ossian as- sisted one another to over- come the fast advancing flames. The fight to save at least a part of the building became more hazardous as debris began to fall around the fire- men manning the hoses. The flames jumped as high as 75 to 100 feet as the roof col- lapsed. The flames were vis- ible from the north edge of Bluffton. 5 The Fire of1958 On Tuesday, April 15, 1958 at 11:15 p.m., a fire of undetermined origin destroyed the west half of the Lancaster Central School. The fire caused damage estimated at close to half a million dollars. Bluffton's unit, however, remained on the scene until 9 o'clock to prevent the flames from re- kindling. Although many reports and suppositions have been made as to what caused the fire, no definite proof has been . made and probably never will. s ,im-W-awww... rss, 5 .M W- - 5 ' -'N-f 2 Q . .H . , 5 tg ,, ' WW. -.T t 5' N.. - E .. wneasts-..,, watzum-.M -,ftlfvv 9
