In the year of 1845 Lancaster Township was organized as a township unit under the law of 1816. An election was held and three trustees were elected on the 29th of August 1845. The three trustees elected were William Hannah, Allen Clark, and William Montgomery. In 1847 the board met and laid the township off in school districts starting in the northeast corner of range 12 with District No. 1 known in later years as the Daily School, District No. 2 as the Eagleville School, No. 3 as the Donaldson School, No. 4 in the southwest part of the Township, No. 5 as the Center School, No. 6 as the Bender School, No. 7 as the Wasson School, No. 8 as the Toll Gate, No. 9 as the Lamb School, and at a later date a district was made in range 13 known as the Little School No. 10, and No. 11 known as the Craigville School. In 1856 it was decided that district No. 4 was too large and a new district was made which became the Murray School. And the last district was made in the northeast part of the township known as the Swamp or Little Vine School. On May 7, 1853, a petition was filed with the trustees of the township to hold an election for the purpose of levying a tax to build school houses in Lancaster Township. The election was held on June 6, 1853 and a levy was made for fifty cents on the one hundred dollars evaluation to raise money to build the new school houses. The trustees at that time were Allen Clark, Nathaniel Greenfield, and Alexander DeLong. In 1859 three more new schools were built by Enoch High in district Numbers 3, 10, and 13 at a cost of 3320.00 each. On June 6, 1868 the trustees opened bids for a new school building to be built in District No. 12. The lowest bid was S475.00, made by both George Steele and Isaac Shady. The law of 1859 reduced the number of trustees from three to one. On April 4, 1859, Nathaniel Greenfield was elected. The following day, he took office. In later years the frame buildings were f replaced by brick buildings. Several of these one room buildings were built by E. R. Davenport, trustee. In 1895 the two back rooms of Craigville School were built by Andy Reed, trustee. In 1899 a four room building at Murray y was built by Nelson Stafford, trustee. 5 F In 1903 the front part of the building at Craigville, was built by Joel Fry, trustee. In 1910 the brick building' known as the Little School was built by Dan Harsh, trustee. This building was used until 1928 when the students were sent to Craigville School. It came to a time when these one room schools were getting old and not very suitable for school purpose any more. There was 5 started a movement of consolidation of these one room buildings. Some of these were abandoned and the children were hauled to A L A -Q - the Craigville and Murray Schools. In 1920 the 'trustee and advisory board started plans to build a high school and 5 g D x I .1 -1 T-ll? tr Y i C elementary school, and in December 1921 . f ia s 1 Histor of Lancaster WASSON SCHOOL--one mile north and two miles east of Bluffton. the trustee and advisory board met and opened bids for a new school building to be built near the center of the township. Five acres of ground were bought from George Mill- holland for iB1,250. Students were all brought to school by bus. Thirteen busses were used and 23 teachers were employed at that time. The first class, of 14, to graduate from the high school was in the spring of 1923. The first principal was Cary E. Mounsey. The new school was not completed by the time the neighboring schools were opening, so Lancaster's classes began later in the fall. When classes began, the Home Economics Room was still not completed. A water pipe was run on the top of the floor in order to supply water for the classes meeting in this room. This building was built by the following township officers: A.E. Hunt, trustee, A. R. Huyette, Co-Supt.g .Tess Dailey, Charles King, Raymond Wasson, and N..T. Kleinknight, ad- visory board. To the trustee and the advisory board, after having the building built, came the obligation to meet bonds as they came due, and this was done by taxation. The above board met all of these payments as they came due through all their term of office. At the end of the above boards term of office they had paid 335,000.00 of the township indebtedness. In 1927 the following men served as ad- visory board members: Jess Dailey, Raymond Wasson, and Barney Rupright, J.L. Mounsey, L.E. Stimmel, and Barney Rupright served on the board in 1931. After a few years the teachers were re- duced to 19 and the bus drivers were reduced to 11. Six new bus bodies were bought and three new trucks to replace old ones. All three schools were in good repair except the Lancaster gymnasium floor which was in bad condition caused by water coming in under the floor. Trustees of Lancaster From 1859-67 Originally, the township trustees had charge of the entire school system, including building and planning of the school, with some help from the advisory board. Today, the duties of this office have been greatly reduced. Assessing and relief are the main responsibilities of the trustee with most other powers vested in the school board. The trustees for Lancaster Township were as follows: 5 r From left to right the team members are: Gretchen Bell, Aleda Barger, Dorothy CPaxsonJ Smith, Lola Barger, Irene Speheger, Mable Patterson,Vera Barger, Lorene Speheger, Celia Schwartz, and Paul Dailey, hat was the year Bobcats have been around for a long time nw T3 Mr umm wm r aawm me my me TS ijgilli HW! GOOD-BYE SENIORS The school year is almost over and the Seniors will be leaving us. We wish to congratulate them on their success during their school career, and hope that they will have as much success in the future as in the past. We regard them as our older brothers and sisters, and they have been our example. We are sure they deserve much praise for their work during the past four years. As years roll by, may they en- joy every measure of happiness. James Burgoon. Grade 4-Jean Harris, Genevieve Martin, Anna- bel Snider. In memory, we fondly think of those former mem- bers and officers. In our first year there were twenty-eight mem- bers. During the year, Paul Cutler, Arwilda Roberts and Vivian Thompson left. A new member who joined our throng was Harold Curry. The Sophomore year began with twenty-one stu- dents and ended with twenty. Those who dropped out or moved away before school started were: Jack Aeby, Byrl Elzey, Daniel Lantz, John Rowe, and Flor- ence Heyerly. The Junior year found Dean Andrew a new mem- ber. The pupils who did not return as Juniors were: Lloyd Stewart, Loren Frauhiger, Velma Durr, Othal Herrick. Those that moved during the year were: Everett Gentis and Helen Eversole. The Senior year started with Harold Messick be- ing absent one semester and William Johnloz enter- ing as a new member. Officers of the various classes were: Senior Officers: Dean Andrew, President, Earl Elzey, Vice Presidentg Fay Jackson, Secretary- Treasurer. Junior Officers: Dean Andrew, President, Earl Elzey, Vice Presidentg Harold Curry, Secretary- Treasurer. Sophomore Officers: Lloyd Stewart, President: Fay Jackson, Vice President, Harold Messick, Secre- tary-Treasurer. Freshmen Officers: Irvin Ginter, President, Lloyd Stewart, Vice Presidentg Betty French, Secretary- Treasurer. The following students graduate this year: Dean Andrew, Harold Curry, Frances Davis, Earl Elzey, Betty French, Irvin Ginter, Robert Groh, Fay Jack- son, William Johnloz, Lowell Kelsey, Edna Maupin, Russell Myers, Wendell Shady, Josephine Studa- baker, Harold Messick, Harold Wilcoxson, Mary Belle Wilson. The last few weeks have been filled with adven- tures and preparations. The class presented the class play, Meet Uncle Sally at the Lancaster School, Wednesday, April 6. On April 10 the baccalaureate services were held at the school and were conducted by Rev. Wisner. The final exercises were held at the school on Thursday, April 14, when the class received their diplomas. The four years have been pleasant and educational. The parting was sad, but many were eager to begin their battle with life. To L. H. S. we bid good-bye and wish the coming classes a pleasant voyage. We now leave you as we are setting out on a long voyage through life, filled with the will to win. Good-bye, Senior Class of '32. The fire fighters and e- quipment from six commu- nities including Bluffton, Un- iondale, Preble, Liberty, Petroleum, and Ossian as- sisted one another to over- come the fast advancing flames. The fight to save at least a part of the building became more hazardous as debris began to fall around the fire- men manning the hoses. The flames jumped as high as 75 to 100 feet as the roof col- lapsed. The flames were vis- ible from the north edge of Bluffton. 5 The Fire of1958 On Tuesday, April 15, 1958 at 11:15 p.m., a fire of undetermined origin destroyed the west half of the Lancaster Central School. The fire caused damage estimated at close to half a million dollars. The conflagration ended classes for 580 students for the remainder of the term which had three weeks to go before graduation ex- ercises. . Seniors appeared at Lancaster at 4:45 a.m. promptly to board the three busses that transported them first to Greenfield Village. Upon arriving at Greenfield Village, guides directed the Seniors through a few of the buildings. Then the Seniors were on their own to tour the rest of the area. Seniors toured the Ford Museum after lunchg and from there went to the Central Office Building of the Ford Motor Company and then to the Fowl River Rouge Plant, an assembly line, for a tour. After the last tour, the busses transported the group to Windsor, Ontario via Detroit-Windsor Auto Tunnel. After a brief stop in Canada, they returned to the United States via Ambassador Bridge. Back in Detroit the Seniors had an hour to tour De- troit shopping areas and then ate supper at the Post- House Cafeteria in the Detroit terminal. By 8:00 the busses were loaded with sleepy Seniors ready for the long trip home. l l x.,,. 'nga' ,- Tl? ti. My! My, Mick what a thrill! Ice cream diets don't help very much. We remember the good times, the friendships made, and all the know- ledge that we have gained amidst the hustle and bustle of the students. We remember the rush to beat the bell, the smell of dinner cook- ing, and noon hours in the halls and the art room. We think' the best part of every day is the long-awaited moment when at 3:15 the bell dismisses us from another typical day at Lancaster. In the future it will be the Norwell School annual. We wish to thank each and everyone of you for helping make this, our final book, possible. We are grateful for the pictures that you loaned to us so that we all might share in some memories. On the previous pages, we have tried to record a few moments and experiences with you and your classmates. With the passage of the years, you may look back upon this school year as the time when the darkness of ignor- ance suddenly became bright with the gleam of knowledge.
