Lancaster Central High School was huilt near the center of the town- ship in 1922. Klr. A. E. Hunt was trustee at that time. Klany good times were shared together hy the students. As the years rolled along, the population of the township increased quite rapidly. lt hecame necessary to add an addition to our building. This was constructed by the Vvforks Progress Administration and completed in 19-H. Klr. Rlilo Lesh was our trustee then. Since there was more room, Klurray and Craigville schools were ahandoned, and the students were sent to L. H. S. A new gymnasium was the outstanding feature of the new addition. XVe the senior class of 19-IPS are very proud to graduate from such a fine school as Lancaster High School. .XX I x X 'I ' PAGE TWD Stars of the Evening STUDIO A The Directors 2079850 STUDIO B We The People STUDEO C Sports Review STUDIO D Club Matinee LHRM' H Hocus H ia 1. i-:N 'l'Rm' ian MA RG,-XRET jon N sox VVe, the senior class of 1948, wish to dedicate the 1948 Reflector to our high school sponsors Kliss Margaret Johnson, Klrs. Before we had the misfortune to be killed in an automobile accident l, Lauretta, was the editor of the Craigville Comic Book, a superman specialty. I, Ruth Ann. was engaged in raising Palomino horses. which at that time was very profitable as the fad of horseback riding had returned. Since we were killed in an auto accident, we feel it our duty to warn you about sharp curves. Although it is loads of fun being able to scare people, and never have to fear on-coming trains. or falling off a twenty story building, it would be nice to sit at a tourney once again with coke being poured down your back, and knees poking you inthe ribs. The people living in this grand old world don't know how thankful they can be for all of this. k Being thankful reminds us of when we were in Florida. The sun was shining brightly, and the weather was fine for swimming, when out of the clear blue sky, rose a terrifying shriek that would even scare a ghost. We hastily went to investigate. Out on the ocean a tiny girl was flouncing up and down, screaming, and crying for help. Being as swift as the wind, we went to investigate. As we drew near, she was gasping for air, and slowly she went down. She looked like an angel, long blond hair with beautiful blue eyes. We pulled her to safety and how thankful she was. Later we learn- ed the girl was Lillian Fiechter, and we were truly glad to help our old classmate, She had done so much for the class of '48. Lillian was on a vacation from working at a bank at Fort Wayne and had come to Florida for a rest. Last Christmas we went to California, and on Christmas Eve we went to one of the beauti- ful churches in Los Angeles. As we seated ourselves on the chandelier, the choir slowly marched in carrying lighted candles. After the choir was seated, the preacher., who had been kneeling be- hind the pulpit, rose. How surprised we were to note that it was a woman. While she was reading the second chapter of Matthew. we recognized her, and we fell right off the chandelier into the laps of two women. The women jumped up and ran right out of the church leaving their coats and purses. We were looking through the purses to find some identification, when we noted the names of Dr. Wanda Byerly, 1784 Palm Drive, Los Angeles, and Janis Ann Bynum, Registered Nurse, 1784 Palm Drive. Los Angeles. Later we read in the paper that the people of that church believed they had seen one of God's miracles. They were encouraged by their preacher to make ready for the great coming. In case you want to know, the preacher was none other than Carolyn Henry. As we floated down the street of Los Angeles one day, we noticed a magnificent building call- ed The Yuteve Fashions . Being as fond of lovely clothes now as we were when alive, we decided to go in. Hearing a familiar giggle, we immediately ascended to the second floor, and to our sur- prise we saw Joan Wiebke fitting a new creation on her model Bonnie Trullender. We too, had to laugh when we saw the new style. Once again in the year of '61 dresses are back to the knees. Just as we were about to leave, we were astonished by the dramatic appearance of the most handsome man ever created. We heard Joan exclaim, Dick. As we listened, we learned he was Dick Harris. who had taken the place of Clark Gable as the screen's greatest lover. One night the wind was raging, and we were carried far out to sea. Suddenly there appeared to our wondering eyes an airplane signaling in distress. Realizing its danger, we immediately hast- ened to take a position, one on each wing, and by our divine guidance brought the plane safely back to the San Francisco airport. The pilot got out weary. but happy to touch ground again. He was met by the radio technician, who exclaimed that it was a miracle, that he returned uninjured. Once again we were very glad to see our old classmates. Lloyd Stern., pilot, and Bob Duncan, radio technician, walked into the hanger to receive new orders. Before leaving San Francisco we visited the docks, where huge ocean liners were getting ready to sail. There was a crowd gathered in front of the ship. Queen Elizabeth. 'The Duke of Remington and his bride are sailing on this ship to return to England, said a woman in the crowd. Here they come, someone shouted. A long sleek. shining car came to a stop directly in front of us. Out stepped the Duke of Remington followed by his blushing bride. What? The bride was Berniece Moser. V One day while looking over the shoulder of an old man, we noticed the headlines which said. ONCE AGAIN WOMAN DARE-DEVIL AND COMPANION WIN. We got so excited we bumped the old man, and he thinking a fly was bothering him struck at us. Wow! Mr. Hedges. Now how did he get in here: he graduated a long time before we did. But it is rather nice knowing-what the sponsors are doing. In case you want to know, Mr. Hedges has retired and is living a life of ease. Mrs. Troyer has also retired to a lovely estate in New York and has been devoting her time to raising flowers which are the envy of every flower lover. After reading the headlines about the women dare-devils, we set out for New York.. We want- ed to see the race as best we could, so we just sat on the hood of one of the racers. Little did we realize this one belonged to that woman dare-devil. In she jumped with a bound and went off llke a fire cracker. Boy. what a ride! When finally she stopped. and we got our breath. off we went again. What kind of a woman was this behind the wheel?? Just to stop long enough to start again. But soon we knew it wasn't the same person. The first one had been Colleen Huss and the second, Virginia Clark. her assistant. Oh dear, and we had warned them about curves. I Upon leaving the grounds of the race track, we noticed an organ grinder, with a monkey. The monkey looked rather large, but then we all have to make a living. The organ was playing. Cheer, Cheer for Lancaster High. How strange that seemed. We drew nearer to see this wonder CContinued on Page 495 muse r-IFTEEN - wed' k , n 1 if' .A.,A A ' 7 a PAGE EIXTEEN ,fx , N A Our Junior Officers Starting at ilu' top and rvadizzg from left to right Dale lleyer, Vice-President Harry Steffen, Secretary-Treas. Sports Of The Year The girls of the physical education classes have learned and played many interesting games this year. so now I would like to tell you briefly the highlights of each sport. Y At the beginning of school last fall. softball seemed to be the main sport for us. Each class had a team, so at noon hour the girls would have softball games on their own ball diamond. Mrs, Shady, our physical education teacher. usually was the umpire. In class we learned to bat, bunt. throw. and pitch a ball. Other important points were learned in order to play good softball. Our next sport was soccer. It is a game somewhat like football. but it was not as strenuous. The classes enjoyed this game. since this was the first year they had ever played it. Volley ball was the main subject, since the weather began to get too bad to play outdoors any longer. The girls were not too much acquainted with the game, so Mrs. Shady started at the beginning and told each class the rules of the game, After practicing volley ball for several weeks, we had a game with Bluffton on November 18. on the Lancaster floor. The girls who participated in the game were: Lauretta Anderson, Janis Bynum, Virginia Clark. Betty Faus, Colleen Huss, Carolyn Henry. Joan Wiebke, Ruth Ann Randall. Bonnie Trullender, and Lucille Gerber. Three games were played during the evening. The score of the first game was Lancaster 63, Bluffton 22. The score of the second game was Lancaster 21, Bluff- ton 3, and the last game we also won 87 to 70, Another game was scheduled for December 9 to be played at Bluffton. Lancaster won all three games that were played. The scores of the games were 21-6: 21-103 34-28. We were very proud of these girls. since this was our first time to participate in games outside of our school and to win all six games that were played. After volley ball was over. basketball was our next sport. Doctor Meade of Blufftonbgavc each girl in the upper six grades, who wished to play basketball. an opportunity to have a physical cx- amination. The consent of the parents was also necessary in order to have each student participate in the games which were played. , CContinued on Page 493 PAGE TWENTY-NINE ,Q yo I J 'Wx -xy , H, xg 'i , eg - TT 1 5 ' ,- Q, 1 1 '. 5 2 K ' .Q Z - - 1 ' Lf ' 2 3 ' ' . 2 5 ' sl I sh ,gf I 1. XValter llankey The first student council of l,ancaster was organized in 1945 with the assistance of Klr. -lohnson and Klr. Hedges. The purpose of the council is to have government by the students. Two of the most outstanding accomplishments this year are the plan for the distribution uf tourney tickets, and the assembly programs which they planned. Officers who headed this xear's council were: president, Lloyd Stern: vice- presidcnt, Bob lVorden: secretary and treasurer, Carolyn l-lenry. Lloyd has served as president every year since it has been organized. AIl'll1l5l'l T of the council include the president of each class, a representative from each of the upper six grades, representatives from the girls' 4'H club, boys' -I--H club, girls' chorus, boys' chorus, and band. It is the first Hi-Y organization Lancaster has ever had. It was suggested hy our sponsor hir. Hedges, early in the school year that we organize a Hi-Y. The boys met on various occasions at noons and decided it would be ai worthwhile organization. On Nlonday, January 19, the Bluffton Hi-Y came to Lancaster to give us our formal initiation. It was a very impressive service, which was held in the gym. The new organization meets monthly, usually on a Rlonday night. ln future years the Hi-Y is going to start finding ways of making money and doing things for the betterment of the community. PAGE THIRTY-FIVE Lancaster High School Band The hand of the Lancaster High School is endeayoring to do many things to im- proye and hetter itself for the honor and pride of the school and all who are interested in it. YVe are acquiring the ahility to read music more fluently, to learn to love hetter music, to hare hetter teamwork in the entire hand, and to gain a better appreciation of what music really is. The younger memhers are proving themselves quite worthy of heing in the senior hand. The hand rehearses two periods every Friday, and we have purchased two new hooks this year - - Bennett No. -l- and Program Classics No. 2. YVe hope to make this hand important and something of which we can really he proud. The handmaster of our hand is hir. F. L. Blough. X The girls' chorus has rendered many performances at several occasions during the school year. Class was held two times a week. Two of our most outstanding features were a lllinstrel, the first ever to be presented at Lancaster, and an evening of music, which was presented at Christmas time, as a farewell to XValter Hartman, who has been our pianist for the last four years. Again this year, as before. we gave an Operetta entitled Hhly Spanish Sweetheart which was well received. XVe also sang at 'lleachers lnstitute in Bluffton on November 155 and Lauretta Ander- son, Lucille Gerber, Virginia Clark and Carolyn Henry represented Lancaster singing in the district chorus at the Ft. Just as we thought, there stood Dale Bowman playing the organ, and Ralph Fiecht- er, posing as a monkey. Those fellows always were thinking up ways of drawing attention. Later we learned that Dale annd Ralph really owned a music shop and did this as an advertisement. As we were sitting on a cloud we were listening to beautiful music which was coming from the earth. We went down to learn who was playing. lt was Barbara Bright playing on one of her con- cert tours. She was nationally known as Barbara and Her Magic Violin as she had become a great violinist. After the concert she received a message and she left immediately. It seems very strange here in our spiritual world, as though someone was trying to enter. Per- haps the message Barbara had received has something to do with it. We followed Barbara to the hospital. She got out of the taxi and said, Goodbye, Lucille. A woman taxi driver, we wondered? There was Lucille Zimmerman sitting behind the wheel. Well. of all things. The superintendent of nurses came and talked to Barbara. We recognized the superintendent as Priscilla Tarr. As they talked they looked very sad. We wondered if we knew the person who had died. As we are now spirits, we dare not question our Father's wishes, and we are not allowed to visit a sick room of a friend. He always knows best. ' We heard Barbara and Priscilla talking. Priscilla was saying that during a dangerous experi- ment, Lucille Gerber, who had become a famous scientist was stricken with a fatal disease. Lucille's experiment, which was not finished, might have been the only cure for the disease. The church was crowded and we noticed Betty Faus and Walter Hartman. Betty was telling Walter that she was the physical education teacher at Lancaster. Walter had finished composing his latest symphony. He was internationally known as one of the greatest pianists. Every member of our class is attending the funeral. Someone has entered our spiritual world. Welcome, Lucille Gerber. Together, the three of us will watch over our classmates. Isn't it strange how they grow older and we stay younger? Lauretta Anderson Ruth Ann Randall Sports Of The Year During class we practiced playing girls' basketball, and Mrs. Shady would ask questionshon the fundamentals of basketball. Each class organized a teamg then they played each other during the noon hour. Tourneys were played at noon between the different teams. A record was kept to see who could stay on the Ten List. The Ten List was composed of the ten people who could make the most foul shots. This list was compiled from the names of the girls of the physical education classes during a certain period of time. . D Mat work was our last sport of interest. Along with this we played kickball and tennis once in a while. h , Head stands, cartwheels, knee flips, pyramids, and many other stunts were practiced and learned by all the classes.
