She repl1es 1n a southern drawl Forty N1ne Barrels of O11 a Day Forty N1ne Barrels and Man That A1nt Hay' Dave Mackey whom everyone calls The Man Wlth the BanJo IS Bumm1ng Around 1n Texas too My but Isnt Th1S a Small World Somewhere Along the Way we see Lyle Prmtz Lloyd Mlller and Harold Kruse Walk1ng to MISSOUFI They want to be shown that th1s IS a Woman s World Down Yonder 1n Tennessee we stop at the Rock and Roll dance studlo and talk Wlth the teachers Ruth Smlth and Judy Vesaas They are teach1ng Van Smlth and Roger Bonnell the Tennessee W1g Walk 'lhe g1rls are havlng a Trymg t1me because the boys just don t seem to be In the Mood for dancmg SIHCG It IS Juke Box Saturday Nlght we stop at the Wheel of Fortune n1ght club We are met at the door by the manager Ormand Bauer, who says Make Yourself Comfortable The check g1rls Glona Warfel and Jeanette Walthers tell us to Close the Door They re Com1ng ID the W1ndows So we s1t down and who do we see but Bob Nelson's sW1ng and sway orchestra and h1S slngers Donalee Adams and Joel Ralm Naturally we are very much 1nterested when we see these people for they are all old fr1ends of ours After a Whlle we thought we recogmzed the Master of Ceremon1es for the evenmg Is It Any Wonder that It should be Charles Champ1on It seems he IS st1ll Bubbl1ng Over w1th those corny Jokes We can understand though for h1s lov1ng cousln Loretta Champlon IS st1ll Wrltlng h1s scr1pts Bes1des wr1t1ng scrlpts she st1ll llk8S telev1s1on shows that g1Ve away pr1zes Youll Almost Always see her on your screen 1f you look hard enough Its gett1ng to be about Two OClock 1n the Morn1ng so we th1nk 1ts about t1me we re leavlng the n1ght club We cllmb 1nto our Crazy Otto and start Slowly toward Th1s Old House where we are staylng The next mormng I say to my partner Ive Been Thlflklflg about the rest of our gang and what they m1ght be do1ng now So we start out Once More to see whom we can flnd Flrst we see Ronme Lmdsay Norman Blalr Carl Shafer, and John Morns Wlth A Dlme and a Dollar ln the1r pockets they are on the1r way back to New York for they l1ked It so well when they were th re before We gave them a r1de for thats where We were head1ng When we arrlved we saw Eddle Lamoreux and Kenny Rogers They are the co owners of the largest garage 1n the world and do1ng very well for themselves They each have prxvate secretarles who are Joanne Burkholder and Carole Brantner ThlS 1S truly a Full T1me Job but they both lxke It very much Carolyn Erbsen, Darlene Komng, and Llnda Lamoreux are g1v1ng Free Home Demonstratlons on sewmg and cooklng They ar all experts at th1S Because they have studled very hard and L1ttle Th1ngs Mean a Lot when It comes to a Job of th1s klnd We go to see a ball game and are qulte surprlsed to flnd g1rls playlng But we are even more surpr1sed when we see Nancy Lotz, Lmda James and Jamce Geary there They arent playlng they are selhng peanuts and pop Jamce Gledd IS the1r manager seexng that they do It r1ght Smlle g1rls your do1ng a f1ne Job We see Klaus Fhtner has done verv well ln h1S pOl1t1CS Maybe you have read about h1m 1n the papers He flnally made lt to the head of the street cleanmg depart ment Chfford Berge and Ivan Burkltt are worklng w1th h1m Some Day you may get promoted boys so keep up the good work Let Me Be the One to tell you about our p1an1st Ruth Dlffenderfer She 1S tak1ng a tour of Europe for one whole month Dont you Wlsh You Were There Wlth her It Is No Secret so Wake the Town and Tell the People and Let Me Know all about It when you return Ruth Th1S IS what has happened to that Old Gang of M1ne over a per1od of years We hope you have enjoyed thlS short dream w1th us and Some Day maybe you Wlll really see some of our old gang as th1s dream foretells Page Twenty as 11 sa 11 - 1 1 1 1 1 cz 1 77 . Remember Mak1ng a h1t record 1S a long and tedlous process as you w1ll see as we follow the h1t tune Class of 1956 from 1tS or1g1n to 1ts release In the beglnnmg 119443 there were only thlrty three l1ttle notes After worklng wlth these notes for elght years dropping some and addmg others a beaut1ful melody was created Th1s melody now compos d ot flfty four notes was nearly ready to be recorded But xt st1ll had to go through a per1od of four year s work to be entxrely ready The flrst year 119521 the l1ttle melody had to grow Th1S years conductors were Carl Shafer pres1dent Nancy Lotz v1ce presxdent Charles Champ1on secretary Jackle Buss treasurer Student Counc1l repre entatlves were Kenny Rogers and Carole Brant ner Joanne Burkholder was a cand1date for Basketball Queen and Nancy Lotz was a cand1date for Queen of the Flremen s Ball One d1Vers1on ln the l1ttle melody s work was In1t1at1on Day The boy notes had to wear the1r 19V1S backwards burlap bag shlrts boots nylons women s hats and earrlngs The glrl notes wore pajamas wrong s1de out short sk1rts blouses on backwards hlgh heeled shoes and their ha1r 1n thlrteen p1gta1ls on one s1de and uncombed on the other All the notes carrxed pa1ls to accommodate upperclassmen s books and they had to smear l1pst1ck all over the1r faces The second year the l1ttle melody had to be ref1ned so that all the notes would be ln harmony Th1S years conductors were Kenny Rogers pres1dent Mary Ann Dlffen derfer v1ce pres1dent Charles Champ1on secretary Jan1ce Geary treasurer Student Counc1l representatlves were Eddle Lamoreux and Nancy Lotz Elected to the In1t1at1on Comm1ttee whose Job It was to th1nk up l1ttle deeds for the freshmen to do were Carole Brantner and Bob Nelson Carole Brantner was a cand1date for Basketball Queen and Mary Ann D1ffenderfer was Queen of the Fxremen s Ball The thxrd year was a busy year for the l1ttle melody who now was a full fledged song Thls year rehearsals started for our fmal recordmg Our conductors were Loretta Champxon pres1dent Carl Shafer VICC pres1dent Charles Champ1on secretary Joanne Burkholder treasurer Student Counc1l representatxves were Kenny Rogers and Carolyn Joel Rahn and Joanne Burkholder were Basketball Klng and Queen Loretta Champ1on was Queen of the Flremens Ball and Ruth Merboth was a cand1date for F F A Chapter Sweetheart Joanne Burkholder Mary Ann D1ffenderfer Carl Shafer and Davld Mackey were elected to the Nat1onal Honor Socrety The busy l1ttle notes as a song won the annual Magaz1ne Sales Contest selected class rlngs put on the play We Shook the Famlly Tree served the annual Carroll County Athletlc Banquet and sponsored the Jun1or Sen1or Prom We were now ready to record our song IH th1s fourth and fxnal year Our con ductors th1S year were Loretta Champ1on pres1dent Davld Mackey V109 pres1dent Charles Ch3mp10H secretary Joanne Burkholder treasurer Carole Brantner and Joel Rahn were the Student Counc1l representatlves In1t1at1on Comm1ttee members were Jan 1ce Geary and Bob Nelson Carole Brantner and Eddle Lamoreux were Homecommg Queen and Kmg and Carolyn Erbsen was a cand1date for Queen of the Flremens Ball Elected to the Nat1onal Honor Socrety fh1S year were Jackre Buss Ronme L1HdSay Lo retta Champ1on and Carolyn Erbsen As a song the notes agam won the annual Maga zlne Sales Contest produced the play A Man Called Peter put on two Bake Sales ponsored a car wash publlshed the Lanette and went to New York on thexr senlor tr1p before they were flnally recorded May 31 1956 Thls IS the way a h1t song IS created refmed and recorded Of the thlrty seven notes that fmally compose the song only fourteen from the or1g1nal thlrty three notes survlved the the ent1re process They are Donalee Adams Charles Champ1on Loretta Champ1on Mary Ann Dlffenderfer Ruth Dlffenderfer Jan1ce Geary Jan1ce Gledd Eddle Lamoreux Ronnle Llndsay Nancy Lotz Lloyd Mlller John Morrls Lyle Prmtz and Kenny Rogers As a melody and then a song the notes were a smash h1t How success ful the notes w1ll be 1nd1v1dually dep nds upon each one It IS a shame after compos1ng such a beautlful song that the notes must break up and seek 1nd1v1dual success But we are certaln each Wlll f1nd that success Page Nxnet en . ,, ,, . . . . ! 7 ' . . . - . ,, ,, .
