OUR HEROES From Lamesa High they went, To fight and die where ever sent, They left for Lamesa High a name. Freedom forever was their aim. They have died on east and west, Or on the ocean's foamy crest. Whether on land or air or seas, They left behind fond memories. Whether they rest on tropic isle, On sea, or by the River Nile, They gave to Lamesa High a name And for themselves, won ever- lasting fame. SENIOR HISTORY One bright September morning in 1934, freckle faced, snaggle-toothed youngs- ters, painstakingly dressed by proud mothers, were given a sound spank and sent on their way to we were knocked first floor of would be a part IIIOTB school for the first time. Bashful and boisterous though we were, about by those N old high school kidsu, for our room was on the the High School building. Little did we realize that someday we of this great institution. The next year we were moved to the grammar school building, where we felt at home under the supervision of Mrs. Garvin and Mrs. Barron. How big we felt when we attained the rank of grade three and a room on the second floor! Recess was looked forward to, with games of cowboy, skip-the-rope, and playing Hhousenunder some remote tree. Miss Pinkie Brack and Miss Florence Lawson were in charge. Remember the fun on Valentiue's Day, when bashful boys with changing voices would slyly place boxes of candy or sweet verses on giggling girls' desks? Many budding romances were begun in the fifth and sixth grades. Some of which were:Ted McCollum, Dot Burleson, C.T. Beckham, Patricia Meechg B.L. Crouch, Biddy Whiteg Tom Branon, Jean Stanfleld, Carolyn Baldwin, Bill Nixg and Janet Rogers, Junior Burnett. which were: HThe Early Bird Catches The Wormfan operetta in participated: HS1x Who Pass While The Lentils Boil,N Q play portrayed the main character, HCinderella,N an operetta in A highly active class, early in our careers we presented many plays some of which several grades in which C. T. Beckham which Cinderella was played by Biddy White and Prince Charming by Patricia Meech. Remember the contest to see which room could have the best assembly programs? We always thought ours 'GTB best, but we were faced with stiff competition. Having reached the superior rank of grade seven, we felt ourselves capable of anything--such as sending a note down to second floor from the third floor by way of a cord tied in numerous knots. The note mysteriously said, N Beware--the Yellor Y! Fete Meet lene able And how disappointing it was to us when we lost the race of Queen of the May so closely. Our candidates were Biddy White and Jonnie Smith. That year, our girls had a hard-to-beat baseball team, which won the County Some of the players were Marzelle Fields, NDustyH Henry, Billie Kidd, Esti- Lovell, and Biddy and Nita White. What fun they had when they presentedlov- Mr. Harris, the coach, with a large box of Valentine candy on Valent1ne's. Climaxing activities of the year, sober faced boys and tearful girls looked upon graduation breathlessly and a little willfully, for it gag hard to leave the dear old grammar scheol,of which we had so long been a part and enter an entirely new phase of life-the high scheel.Home room teachers were Mrs.Dan Ogletree,Mr. St. Elmo Powell and Mr.Lloyd Harris. Our class had no valedicterian nor salutatorian, for out of one hundred eleven graduating students, twenty seven were honor stu- dents. The honor students were:Carolyn Baldw1n,C.T. Beckham,Dorothy Nell Burlesem Belva Cerbitt, Wendell Densen, Marzelle Fields, Dorothy Ross Gibson, Christine Heath, Wanda Jean Henry, Truitt Jones, Wilma Jean Jones,Billie Kidd, Wayne Lawler, Billie Faye Leamen, Virginia Luker, Marianne McBride, Ted McCollum,Patr1cia Meech, Lorayne Morris, Dorothy Jane Nelson, Bill Nix, Bobbie Oates, Wilma Lee Robertson, Janet Rogers, Maurine Sharp, Jennie Muriel Smith, Jean Stanfield, and Biddy Whnm. Our first day in high school introduced devasting changes. How different to ge to the teacher's class, rather than have her come to ours! As lowly nslime,N we obeyed our superiors'.every whim, however hazing wasn't as rough as we had ex- pected, for some of it had been done away with. As Hprexyu of the Freshman class we elected Jennie Smith, Nvice-prexyu was Biddy White.Det Burleson and Tom Branon reigned as favorites. The Sophomore year was headed by R. E. Haggard as pres1dent,'Biddy White as vice-president, and Dorothy Ross Gibson as secretary-treasurer. Edgar Lee Hawkins and Dot Burleson were chosen as favorites. Jennie Smith was Sophomore nominee for Valentine Queen. Proudly we reached the mark ef upperclassmen as Juniors. Ted McCollum was chosen as president, Fannie Lee Jenes,vice-president, and Jennie Smith, secretary treasurer. Outstanding events of that year were the Junior Play, N Our Girlsn, which was a huge success and the Junior-Senior Banquet to which we had looked for- ward for so long. Jennie Smith and Bud Eudy were favorites. At last we are Seniors! All of those one hundred eleven graduating from gram- mar school have not remained with us due te various conditions. Despite these con- ditions, we feel that our class is the best--second to none. Bill Matlock holds the position of president, Pat Patterson, vice-president, and Fannie Lee Jones, secretary-treasurer. One of our own Seniors, Jennie Smith, was crowned Football Queen. Speedy Nieman is Best All-Round Boy and Jennie Smith, Best All-Round Girl. Biddy White and Bill Matlock reign as favorites. Several of our boys have distin- guished themselves in various sports, and we will long remember them. And now, we leave L.H.S. carrying fend memories which will remain with us forever. Little Arthur Biziell needed coaxing slightly, but the rest of us were there bright and early. We still remember how all the boys played HCops and Robbersn and chased the little girls at the noon hour Kand still do!J Some of the first Hpuppy-loven victims were Patty Blanton and Carroll Futrell, Betty Serface and Bobby Foutz. No'matter how young, nature always takes its course. , In the third grade we produced our first play, HHanse1 and Gretell,H and un- der the direction of Mrs. Weldon Lindsey, the HRhythm Bandn gave a performance for the high school. Then time passed by, and during the years of the war, our class competed in War Bond purchases. In the seventh grade, we started giving assembly programs and had fun in giv- ing, NSnow White and the Seven Dwarfs,H in which the sixth grade and our class combined forces. This was the first year of the Halloween Carnival, in which Grace Kelso was the candidate from our class. We were defeated, but we put up some tough com- petition. ' The next year, Cordell Cox was given the American Legion Award for the Best All-'Round Girl and Arthur Bizzell, the Best All-'Round Boy. Finally the day came. Graduation Day! With solemn faces we received our di- plomas from Principal G. M. Roberts. After graduation exercises some of the upperclassmen took a few of the newnfishn for Hridesn. Up we came and into Lamesa High School for the First Day! Our greatest desire had come trueg we were at last in High School! CLASS SPONSORS Prudence M.
