Ogletree cold, gray September morning of 1931, proud ambitious mothers of Lamesa washed behind their darlings' ve them a sound spank, and sent them to their first day of school. rn that day on there was a great change in the Schools of Lamesa. The teachers have never been quite re. ,he first grade we were quite a bright bunch, but some of us were visited with a general mixture of mumps, and a great loss of teeth. he time we were proud third graders there had been many changes in the personal of our little group. d members moved away, and new members had taken their places. It was in this grade that Lotta Bess acquired her current nickname of Potty, By this time there were many budding romances: Mary rter and Gene Smith: Billie Sue White and Darrell Meekg Lotta Bess Baldwin, Jack Gordon and othe1's. s passed and We were seventh graders. Did we feel big! Taking the high spots in our memory, we have ng matches between the girls at recess: the room parties sponsored by Mrs. Stuart: the gang fights we ave: and the beginnings of the football careers of Gene Smith, Wayne Roberts, Weldon Bratcher and ho have done so well on the Tornado team. There were many changes in the school that year. We had r of different room teachers, but we seem to have come through with flying colors. We were the largest graduate in a number-,f years. Gerald Parsons was valadictorian, and we were all proud of him. We d to get out of grammar school but were a little scared because we'd heard some dreadful tales about reduction a freshman would get. freshman year was a hilarious one. Jack Gordon was prexy. Darrell Meek was vice-president, and Lotta ldwin was elected secretary. Frances Bartlett and Anne Hurt were the queen candidates, and Mr. D. W. Ogletree and Miss Rosalie eryg the class sponsors. program committee for that year consisted of Nadine Wilson, Speedy Barkhurst, Tucker Phinizy and and. sophomore year showed little change in the executive members. Marvin Standefer was elected president, nner vice-president, Lotta Bess Baldwin was again secretary. Otherwise the committees and the spon- ained the same. as during that semester that the class began to show much interest in sports, as quite a number of our e on the various track. tennis, basketball, and football teams. junior year was one that will not soon be forgotten. Betty Renner was elected president, Lotta Baldwin , and Bill Carpenter vice-president. ss ring committee consisting of Betty Renner, Sarah Land, Marvin Standefer, Bill Carpenter, and Doris was chosen. rder to pay the bills for the annual Junior-Senior Banquet, members of the Junior class were obliged to eans of financing such a stupendous affair. tion picture entitled The Chocolate Soldier was sponsored. junior play, entitled Almost Summer. was a delightful drama in three acts. Participants were Ann , Bill Carpenter, Lotta Bess Baldwin, Tucker Phinizy, Fred Reese, June Winner, Marvin Standefer, Lee ltney, Billie Sue White, and Mary Frances Bartlett. The play was directed by Mrs. Valeria Sharp Pratt. r juniors sold candy, chewing gum, and soda pop at the various field meets, etc. Needless to say, the was an overwhelming success. senior year is the crowning achievement of every student. This year found Weldon Bratcher president Reese vice-president. Lotta Bess Baldwin acted as class secretary for the fourth time. lar member of the class, Billie Sue White, was crowned football queen of 1942-1943. Class favorites were ner and Owen Taylor. 's time many of the boys had distinguished themselves in athletics. Among these were Weldon Bratcher, se, Pud Roberts, Goat Reeves, Jackie Jernigan, C. G. Eudy, Lee Roy Gaultney, Dallas Wise and ers. ded into these last nine months came the various activities that only a senior can participate in. It time that each senior begins to look back over past years, either pleased with his progress, or realizing ascension. The senior invitation committee, the senior play, senior banquets, and graduation exercises ur glorious years for most of the seniors. -10.-
