The everyday routines of our college lives have been broken by unusual events, people, and ideas that all formed the atmosphere and uniqueness of the Lambuth experience. This friendly atmosphere— and special uniqueness made us more rounded individuals and al- lowed us to grow socially and academically. Through these years we have made our plans and dreamed our dreams. Although some of these plans and dreams will never be realized, the excitement of anticipation was there to inspire ful- fillment. We were the ones who had to initiate the action to see our plans through to fulfillment. Oftentimes even the most routine ex- periences afforded us the opportunity to develop ourselves, and, of course, we all attempted new activities which also contributed to our development. Hopefully, we will be able to look back at these two years and remark, We grew as academic and social beings ' Through the Years ' at Lambuth College. mrnrn msmem - ' ■' ■s- ™ L-I. One-on- One has become an annual event on the Lambuth campus. Sponsored by Religious Life, One-on-One is a program bringing physically and mentally handicapped individuals from the Jackson area and Lambuth students together for a day of games, laughter, and fellowship. The program is important because it provides a valuable service to the community in addition to giving students the opportunity to participate in a program of genuine giving. Many of the student participants replied afterward that there is no greater feeling in this world than helping others. Latimer, Interim President, presented diplomas to 93 graduating seniors at Lambuth ' s 138th Annual Com- mencement Exercise on May 3, 1987, in Lambuth ' s Athletic Center. Mr. Hero F. David, the manager of engineering and de- velopment for Aarkus Oliefabrit Company in Copenhagen, Den- mark, delivered the commencement speech, Mr. David, a native of Khurja, India, who was a 1952 graduate of Lambuth and a past recipient of Lambuth ' s R.E. Womack Achievement Award, urged the graduating seniors to remember their Lambuth roots later in life. He stated, I personally owe a lot to Lambuth in giving me values. It gave me an all-around foun- dation . . . based on Christian faith . . . and the challenge to do my utmost. Mr. David encouraged the graduates to realize that they have a living foundation on which they will build through- out life. At the Baccalaureate service earlier that day, Bishop Ernest W. Newman, the Resident Bishop, Nashville Area, of the United Methodist Church, advised the graduates to become, lengthening shadows of their Alma Mater as they were sent out into the world armed with diplomats and a clean sense of values. Prior to the Baccalaureate service in the Chapel, all grad- uating seniors and their families were honored at the traditional President ' s Breakfast, held in the Colonial Room of the College Union. Con- uuviui cter Tiboris, General Director of Mid-America Pro- ductions invited the choir to be one of twelve choirs from across the country to participate in his Masterworks Choral Series. During Spring Semester the choir, in preparation for the event, raised funds and spent hours in rehearsal learning new music. Great support for the event was given by Jackson businesses, the Memphis Conference, hometown churches, and families of choir members. Over $37,000 dollars was raised to finance the trip. Certain German and Russian words twisted the tongues of the participants as rehearsals commenced. The musical selections chosen for the performance were Beethoven ' s Ninth Symphony and Tchaikovsky ' s Ode to Joy. Upon arriving on campus, all freshmen were assigned to a peer group directed by a faculty advisor and an up- perclassman. In no time, the freshmen had learned from their peer advisor the ins and outs of college life, from what professors to avoid to the best place in town for a delicious pizza. In a seminar setting, freshmen met on a regular basis during the Fall Semester with their advisors where they learned effective study skills, the importance of social in- teraction, and other matters pertaining to academic success. Beginning this year, all freshmen are el- igible to earn one hour ' s academic credit for participation in the orientation pro- gram. It is felt that by earning academic credit, freshmen will take orientation more seriously than in the past. Among his goals for the years to come were the creation of a Master ' s degree program in the liberal arts, the establishment of an honors program within the college, and the formation of a student and faculty exchange program with a foreign siste college. The Lambuth troupe gave an entertaining performance of Alan Jag Lerner ' s musical adaptation of the King Arthur legend, directed by Jesse Byrum. Bill Morgan played the young king who prefers to leave the royal thinking to his mentor, Merlin, played by former Lambuth student Russel Moody. Merlin persuades Arthur to agree to an arranged marriage to prevent a border war. Arthur is less than thrilled about entering a loveless marriage, but Merlin assures him that love and marriage seldom come hand in hand. Arthur ' s outlook on matrimony soon changes when he meets his bride-to-be, Gwenevere, played by Jamie Boyd. Soon fter the royal wedding, Merlin is drained of all his magic and Arthur is left to think for himself. His first idea produces the legendary Round Table. John Seabury played the valiant, arrogant Sir Lancelot. Brent Lamars protrayed Mordred, King Arthur ' s illegitimate son who enlists the powers of Morgan Lefey to destroy the royal marriage. Conductor Richard Brown and musical director Margaret Harrison performed a truly superlative orchestration of the Frederick Loewe scene. In an interview with Dr. Mayo, he acknowledged that during his term of office he received a great deal of support and cooperation from faculty, staff, and students. The Board of Trustees commissioned Dr. Latimer to study Lambuth ' s cash flow and enrollment problems and begin ad- dressing these problems while the Presidential Search Com- mittee looked for a permanent administrator. Commenting on his term as President, Dr. Latimer stated As I came to this college, one thing that struck me very early was that, despite the fiscal pressures of recent years, Lambuth College had not given one bit on its academic standards. The faculty is a fine group of people doing an excellent job with young people and the school is still selective about the students that it accepts, realizing that a college must make a decision as to the type of student it will work with. On June 22, 1987, the Board of Trustees announced that Dr. Thomas F. Boyd had been chosen Lambuth ' s new President. On his arrival, Dr. Boyd stressed the fact that he plans to involve community, church, and alumni in the growth and development of Lambuth and to place heavy emphasis on marketing. It ' s very important at the outset, he said, to spend a great deal of time listening. We think Lambuth has the opportunity, as well as the potential, to be one of the premier institutions in the mid-South. Immediately Dr. Boyd became involved in campus activities and in meeting with the various divisions of the college, talking with individual faculty members, and campus leaders. His official installation took place in a special ceremony held in the Chapel on October 10, 1987. Top, left to right: Dr. Hugh Latimer, Lambuth ' s Interim President. Dr. Mayo speaks very positively about the changes that the faculty made in the academic program. He is especially proud of the core curriculum, common course requirements for all Lambuth graduates. In the junior and senior years, students apply knowledge from their various majors to issues and to themes of the 19th and 20th centuries. Other programs which Dr. Mayo thinks were of great importance this year were the Holocaust Conference held in October, Focus which took place in February, and convocations held on Thurs- days throughout the year. Dr. Mayo thinks that all these programs helped to provide students with the kind of in- tellectual background that will enable them to cope with a variety of situations in life. When students look back upon their years at Lambuth College, Dr. Mayo hopes that they will be proud of the diploma which they received. If students have not learned to use their intelligence for good purposes, then the college has failed, according to Dr. Mayo. When Dr. Mayo was asked what he wants to be remembered for as Dean, he replied, one who expected and received a great deal from students. He also made clear that the faculty must make demands to help students reach their potential, and that Lambuth students should meet certain standards. They should not just accept an A and get by. Concerning advice which he as Dean would give to Lambuth students, he succinctly replied, Study! Left to right: Lambuth ' s Academic Dean, Dr. Charles Mayo, his wife, Ann, and daughter, Ginny. At his installation, President Boyd congratulates Dean Mayo after presenting him the Presidential Medallion for educational service to the college. 59 .- •■•:■■■■■.: ' -.. :: Administration Mr. Frank Creeson Vice President for Institutional Advance- ment Mr. Paul Finney Vice President of Student Life and Dean of Students Mr. Clark B. Organizations 119 Religious Life With the appointment of Dr. Gene Davenport, the religious life of Lambuth College underwent many changes this year. The most obvious change is the organization of different denominational groups in hopes of achieving more interest. Another change is the formation of an interdenominational council as the unifying body for the religious groups. The interdenominational council consists of two representatives from each of the denominational groups and oversees the activities of all the groups as well as organizes activities such as the Christmas Candlelight Service, the annual Focus program, and One-On-One. Some things remain the same however. KDK and the Campus Clowns are still active and are providing opportunities for a meaningful ministry to all students who are interested. The first Coffeehouse Papers was printed in 1967 during the turbulent sixties and included the following statement: The Coffeehouse Papers is a publication of dubious literary value produced at irregular intervals by a nefarious conspiracy . . . Though the pub- lication has become more respectable in recent years, it still retains the freshness and enthusiasm of the first Coffeehouse Papers. The resignation of President Harry Gilmer in the fall of 1986, followed by the appointment of Dr. Hugh Latimer as interim President, and finally the installation of Dr. Thomas Boyd as President have all contributed to the uniqueness of 1987 and 1988. Using the theme Through the Years, the Lantern staff has attempted to capture through pictures and script the spirit of these important years in the history of the Lambuth experience. In the spring of ' 87 the edito r, Suzie Hively, and advisor, Dr. Bob Hazlewood, flew to Dallas, Texas, to attend a yearbook workshop sponsored by Taylor Publishing Company, publisher of the Lantern. Loaded with ideas and enthusiasm, they returned to share their experiences with the staff members and to finalize the basic design of this year ' s yearbook. With dedication reflected in an inordinate amount of time and labor, the Lantern staff designed a yearbook of which its members are proud. It is the wish of the staff that through the pages of the current yearbook, you will be able to relive the eventful years of 1987 and 1988. v Organizations 125 Greeks 126 Section Editor: Leigh Ann Espey Assistant: Melinda Clarke 127 AonAon AonAon AonAon AonAon ao: Alpha Omicron Pi Alpha Omicron Pi sorority began the year by pledging twelve new girls and started with a blast by hosting an all-campus party the Bahama Bash at the Holiday Inn. Junior Brad Garner chipped in 6 homers and 39 RBIs as the Eagles averaged nearly 7 runs a game. Lea Manhein and Chris Hudgins carried the brunt of the pitching load, tallying a collective 10-7 record and 3.23 ERA. Butch Lavelle, Rusty Carson, and Kreg Hamm provided support in both starting and relief roles. Individual honors also came Lambuth ' s way at the end of the season. Led offensively by running back Anthony Thaxter, quarter-back Brad Garner, and his troupe of talented receivers headed by wide receiver Richie Pingston and flanker Mike Overbey, the Eagles played an exciting brand of football. When things went right, the Eagles showed the ability to score quickly from anywhere on the field. However, the Eagles remained competitive by a tough, hard- hitting defense, led by linemen Mark Hazzard and Darrell Wyke, linebacking brothers Stuart and Hal Goldberg, and free safety Jeff Branham. The Eagle defense performed magnificently for the season on the whole, making that spectacular play on numerous occasions, especially in the home victory against cross-town rival Lane College. With the winter to beef up the team, Coach Hardegree hopes to improve the Eagles ' ability to be in the right place to win more games next year. If he gets a couple more quality running backs to go with Thaxter, the Eagles may break the .500 mark within the next two seasons. The Eagles went out every night and ! played intensely, hustling all the time, knocking the opponent ; off balance with pressure defense. But, to the dismay of , Coach Tommy Russell and fans alike, they typically came up I on the short end of the score. The team, narrowed to nine players in January after , disciplinary problems, was led statistically by Junior Anthony i Mays (9.7 reb, 13.6 ppg, 1.2 blocks) and Junior Jeff Campbell j (12.8 ppg, 3.1 as) and emotionally by Senior guards McNairy i Morel and Mike Craig. The Eagles improved on their team ! free throw percentage (72%), a weak spot in past seasons, in i this campaign to raise their level of competitiveness.
