Dr. Charles W. Mayo Assumes New Role as Dean Dr. Charles W. Mayo became the new Vice-President and Academic Dean of Lambuth College on July 17, 1983. A familiar face on Lambuth ' s campus, Dr. Mayo has been a member of the faculty since 1968. As a professor and chair- man of the English Department, he contributed much to the college in the years prior to his appointment as Vice-President and Academic Dean. He feels that his perception of the college has not changed since that appointment. Dr. Mayo believes that the only way to continue to make Lambuth an academic institution is daily attention to responsi- ble teaching and advising from the faculty, and daily applica- tion of the students with their minds and attitudes. Since Lam- buth ' s purpose of providing a sound education in a Christian environment advocates inclusion rather than exclusion, he af- firms that the personal attention of faculty to all students regardless of their academic background is a strong asset in maintaining Lambuth ' s academic standards. Some of Dr. Mayo ' s future plans to ensure this academic excellence in- clude a college-wide attendance policy and more emphasis on faculty time dedicated to student learning. Dr. Mayo received his Bachelor ' s Degree in English from Bethel College, two Master ' s of Arts degrees, in counseling and education from Murray State University and in English from George Peabody College with a minor in higher education. He and his wife, Ann, have three children: Clay, Ben, and Ginny. 22 Administration and Faculty

Dr. Harry W. Gilmer, President, Views Lambuth ' s Future With Optimism Upon this age, that never speaks its mind, This furtive age, this age endowed with power To wake the moon with footsteps, fit an oar Into the rowlocks of the wind, and find What swims before his prow; what swirls behind — Upon this gifted age, in its dark hour, Rains from the sky a meteoric shower Of facts . . . they lie unquestioned, uncombined. Wisdom enough to teach us of our ill Is daily spun; but there exists no loom To weave it into fabric; unde filed Proceeds pure Science, and has her say; but still Upon this world from the collective womb Is spewed all day the red triumphant child. — Edna St. Vincent Mi I lay In his fourth year as President of Lambuth College, Dr. Harry S. Gilmer characterized the year as a time of settling-in for the college. Many changes have oc- curred during his term as President and many other changes have yet to come to fruition. Dr. Gilmer feels that these changes are much like the meteoric shower of facts and that all of us are confronted by these changes, facts, and additions every day. Yet, he believes that Lambuth is the loom for us to weave these changes and facts into fabric. Dr. Gilmer looks forward to the completion of the many changes and additions that are currently being developed. Administration and Faculty 21
