In-coming freshmen enjoy a break before they start their busy schedules. Moving into the dorm is a freshman ' s dream and an upperclassman ' s nightmare! As the surrounding faces become more and more familiar, dorm residents develop a special brand of camaraderie which comes only through the sharing of daily trials and joys of dorm life. Before long, Harris, Spangler, Sprague and West Hall become home-away-from-home for the majority of Lambuth ' s students. Introduction 7 During orientation, incoming freshmen enjoy a catered cafeteria meal at Dr. Gilmer ' s house. . . . Into Initial Events Drop Organic Chemistry to add Jogging? . . . You ' re taking how many English classes this semester? These are typical student responses at the beginning of a new school year following the hectic pace of orientation and registration. But, after a week or two of drop-add slips, financial aid lines, and pro- longed searches for classrooms, students finally settle into the familiar routine of college life. Charlie Hughes and Theresa Nichols are caught 8 Introduction In search of her first college class, Cindy Schneider consults her schedule. Although Lam- buth College is, of course, academically oriented, students take frequent breaks from studying for special activities and informal good times. Besides providing students with a chance for relaxation and fun, the many activities and social gatherings in which Lambuth students participate assist them in becoming well-rounded, whole individuals. Those were the days! Lesa Baumer struts her stuff at the Panhellenic Fashion Show. Introduction 13 The BSC1 choir makes its All-Sing debut. Mrs Bridges congratulates the tearful new Miss Lambuth, her daughter Rayla. Where did the ball go, Jim? 14 Introduction ...At Formal Activities In the unique atmosphere of Lam- buth, all school activities draw the col- lege together. Events such as Lambuth sports or Opening Convocation unite the college in the spirit of belonging to the Lambuth Community. The excite ment of Lambuth people feeling good about Lambuth transforms such events into special times. Lee Tharp and Richard Peeples patiently wait for Godot! Raising the flag to signal a new academic year, Michelle Fisher and Michelle Hughes participate in Opening Convocation. Introduction 15 ■' ■■ra ■' .V ' - . During the day the board members became more familiar with a variety of college programs and facilities. The trustees attended seminars conducted by members of the faculty and administration on topics such as Computer Literacy, the Lambuth Honors Program, Medical and Profes- sional Ethics and Leading Economic Indicators. The seminars were followed by a reception and dinner in the Colonial Room with entertainment provided by Dr. Don Huneycutt, faculty representative on the board, and Marcia Mittelstadt. Dr. Robert Peck, Vice President of the Council of Independent Colleges concluded the evening with an ad- dress on the small private liberal arts college and its impact on society. The address was well received by board members and guests. Dr. Don Huneycutt, newly elected faculty representative to the Board of Trustees, discusses a point with Dr. Paul W. Clayton, member of the board and President of the Alumni Association. The semiannual meeting of the Board of Trustees was held on campus in Wisdom Parlor October 25, 1983. 20 Administration and Faculty Dr. Harry W. Gilmer, President, Views Lambuth ' s Future With Optimism Upon this age, that never speaks its mind, This furtive age, this age endowed with power To wake the moon with footsteps, fit an oar Into the rowlocks of the wind, and find What swims before his prow; what swirls behind — Upon this gifted age, in its dark hour, Rains from the sky a meteoric shower Of facts . . . they lie unquestioned, uncombined. Wisdom enough to teach us of our ill Is daily spun; but there exists no loom To weave it into fabric; unde filed Proceeds pure Science, and has her say; but still Upon this world from the collective womb Is spewed all day the red triumphant child. — Edna St. Vincent Mi I lay In his fourth year as President of Lambuth College, Dr. Harry S. Gilmer characterized the year as a time of settling-in for the college. Many changes have oc- curred during his term as President and many other changes have yet to come to fruition. Dr. Gilmer feels that these changes are much like the meteoric shower of facts and that all of us are confronted by these changes, facts, and additions every day. Yet, he believes that Lambuth is the loom for us to weave these changes and facts into fabric. Dr. Gilmer looks forward to the completion of the many changes and additions that are currently being developed. Administration and Faculty 21 Dr. Charles W. Mayo Assumes New Role as Dean Dr. Charles W. Mayo became the new Vice-President and Academic Dean of Lambuth College on July 17, 1983. A familiar face on Lambuth ' s campus, Dr. Mayo has been a member of the faculty since 1968. As a professor and chair- man of the English Department, he contributed much to the college in the years prior to his appointment as Vice-President and Academic Dean. He feels that his perception of the college has not changed since that appointment. Dr. Mayo believes that the only way to continue to make Lambuth an academic institution is daily attention to responsi- ble teaching and advising from the faculty, and daily applica- tion of the students with their minds and attitudes. Since Lam- buth ' s purpose of providing a sound education in a Christian environment advocates inclusion rather than exclusion, he af- firms that the personal attention of faculty to all students regardless of their academic background is a strong asset in maintaining Lambuth ' s academic standards. Some of Dr. Mayo ' s future plans to ensure this academic excellence in- clude a college-wide attendance policy and more emphasis on faculty time dedicated to student learning. Dr. Mayo received his Bachelor ' s Degree in English from Bethel College, two Master ' s of Arts degrees, in counseling and education from Murray State University and in English from George Peabody College with a minor in higher education. He and his wife, Ann, have three children: Clay, Ben, and Ginny. 22 Administration and Faculty Administrative Services Mr. Hayes F. One of the most im portant changes was the appointment of Mr. Bob McLendon as the Vice President in charge of recruitment and Dean of Admissions. Cinder his leadership, the admissions office was extremely active this year. In addition to recruiting in the Tennessee-Kentucky area, the admissions counselors traveled to other states such as Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, New York, and Texas. Here on campus, they sponsored the Preview ' 84 programs and High School Day in order to encourage prospective students to visit the school. The admissions office has other new faces as well as a new leader. Robert Parker and Mary Clayton joined the staff last summer as admissions counselors. One other change in the admissions office was the move to include the financial aid office in the admissions department. Major emphasis was placed on publicity, with the new departmental brochures and posters designed to attract the attention of today ' s high school student. Mr. McLendon hopes that the new publications along with the extended travel will have beneficial results in enrollment in the future. -CT The admissions staff escorts prospective students on campus during High School Day. Members of the admissions staff include Peggy Frost, Scott Likins, Mary Clayton, Virginia Burnette, and Bob McLendon. Lambuth ' s new Vice President for Enrollment Plan- ning and Dean of Admissions is Robert McLendon. 24 Administration and Faculty Luther L. Gobbel Library The Luther L. Gobbel Library continued its standard of excellence this year in several areas. In order to keep up with the rising demands of the students, the library increased the number of volumes to 129,000. This number includes the addition of several large sets of resource encyclopedias, funded through gifts to the library. The library staff also completed the transition from the Dewey Decimal system of cataloging to the Library of Congress method, a task which required much time and effort. The library staff was pleased with the decision of the Board of Trustees to make full-time librarians eligible for tenure. Plans for the future involve the extension of the already existing computer services in the library to include a bibliographic search. This extension will make research simplier and will better enable the library to continue meeting the needs of the Lambuth community. Mrs. Judith Hazlewood, head librarian, evaluates the efforts of her kid- die lit students. LIBRARY STAFF MEMBERS — Mrs. Alexander, Mrs. Turner, Mrs. Baum, Mrs. McAlexander, Mrs. Phillips, and Ms. Hirth — pose for a pic- ture in the archives room. Front Row: Mancy Perry, Jennie Anderson, Leora Douglas, Opherine Byers. Lambuth students noted marked changes in the cafeteria upon their return last fall. There was not only a totally new decor but also a change to the Valley Food Service with the arrival of Mr. Bob Dorsey as director of food ser- vices. Throughout the year the staff offered the students a variety in menus and special services ranging from the baked potato bar to the exam dir ler-dance. The Lambuth Maintenance Staff continued its effective service to the College this year. Under the capable leader- ship of Mr. Frank Murchison, the workers kept the grounds and buildings of the campus clean, beautiful, and in good working order. The most significant of these was its contribution of an academic dean to the college from this division. Gpon the appointment of former English department chairman Dr. Charles Mayo to vice President and Academic Dean, Dr. Bob Hazlewood has very capably filled the position of chairman of the English department. In addition, Dr. Annie Lou Smith has returned to teach two English composition classes. Another exciting development is the new major in broadcast communications which will be offered in the fall of 1984. In order to prepare for this major, Mr. Dalton Eddleman was away on sabbatical; and Mr. Rodney Higgenbotham, visiting assistant professor of speech, came to fill Mr. Eddleman ' s vacancy. Other changes within the department included the appointment of Marcia Mittelstadt as Director of Vocal and Choral Activities. The Division suffered some loss this year. Joanna Ross resigned after 22 years at Lambuth to return to studio artwork in Nashville. Mr. Larry Ray was appointed chairman of the art department in her place. Because of Mr. Ray ' s yearlong sabbatical, the college hired four part-time faculty members to cover the teaching loads: Susan Foote, DeNe Tyson, Talle Johnson, and Lendon Noe. Dr. Russell M. An important addition to the division was the new color terminal and printer in the computer center. This terminal was used primarily for teaching the color graphics class. The faculty members in the division were busy attending meetings and conferences around the area. Also, they welcomed recruiters from graduate schools who are interested in the spring graduates. Plans were made for inviting other off-campus guests from the U.S. Department of Energy to speak on such topics as automation and nuclear wastes. Dr. Ronnie C. Administration and Faculty 31 Division of Social Sciences Interesting and challenging programs, conferences, and symposiums have been very much a part of the SOCIAL SCIENCE DIVISION. The Education Department initiated Lambuth ' s First Annual Reading Conference which attracted participants from the tri-state area and speakers from the new England, Mid-Atlantic, and Southern states. An excellent rating was given this department through intensive evaluation by the Tennessee State Department of Education. The 8th Annual West Tennessee Undergraduate Sociological Symposium was held again on the Lambuth Campus. Students from Lambuth and other regional colleges presented a variety of papers. The Business and Economics Department continues to offer quality professional education with an eye toward the increasing high technology needs. This department provides a full scale evening degree program. March 1 brought members of the Tennessee Home Economics Association to the Lambuth campus for a Telecommunications Conference with networks throughout the state featuring speakers from the American Home Economics Association in Washington, D.C. The Division welcomed three new professors to its staff: Dr. Barney Raffield, associate professor of business administration and economics, Dr. Dwight Tays, assistant professor of political science, and Dr. Bridgie Ford, assistant professor of education. Coach Russell credits the winning season to ex- cellent team play. We played together so well that it made a big difference. Players Stan Chandler and Jeff Fleming led the team in batting with a .356 average. Bruce Hayes was the Eagles ' most productive pitcher with a 3- 2 win-loss record. Also, Scott Patterson, who was named to the 1983 VSAC All-Conference team, composed the Lambuth outfield along with Chandler and Fleming which was said to be the best defensive outfield in the con- ference. The infield was also strong, and with most of the players returning for the 1984 season, Coach Russell expected to have im- proved defensive fielding and above-average pitching in 1984. Furthermore, the addition of sophomore third-baseman Tommy Shelton and the conversion of Jim Henderson to first base and Steve Shelton to catcher strengthen- ed the 1984 team. Ac- cording to coach Roscoe Williams, through most of the 1982-83 season the team was plagued by inconsistent play from most of its members. Nevertheless, three in- dividuals from the tennis team were able to participate in the Volunteer State Athletic Conference Tournament in April. With three returning seniors, seven returning lettermen, and four hopeful freshman standouts, Coach Bray felt that the team would rank high in the V.S.A.C. Conference standings. But such hopes were not to be realized. The 1983-84 Eagles were unable to muster a winning record even though a promising group of young men started practice in October. The Eaglettes hosted a grueling twenty-six game schedule, with its biggest win in a home game over the University of Tennessee at Martin, an N.C.A.A. Division I team. Concerning this victory Coach Birmingham replied, It was a great win for us. Martin is in the toughest division in the country and nobody gave us a chance. It was great for us because we really played a flawless game. With the leadership of team captain Connie McClain and player Vicki Brown, the Eaglettes ran an awesome no star offense, ranking them among one of the top V.S.A.C. teams in the conference in 1983-84. Musical Events Herald The 1983 Christmas season was highlighted with a series of attractions sponsored by the Music Department. On December 6 the Concert Band and Concert Choir joined to present a Christmas con- cert under the direction of Richard Brown and Marcia Mittelstadt with arrangements of everything from nursery rhymes to Christmas tunes. Concluding the program was Robert Shaw ' s The Many Moods of Christmas Suite Three, a joint medley of well-known Christmas songs performed by the Concert Band and Choir. Also in December was the annual Madrigal Feaste with early Renaissance and ba- roque Christmas music performed by the sixteen-member Kaleidoscope. Com- plementing the performance was an authentic Elizabethan dinner. An elaborate sixteenth-century setting and traditional costumes added a touch of elegance to the evening ' s events. The Christmas season came to a close with the annual Christmas Candlelight Ser- vice on December 11. The program featured the newly-formed Choral Society of about fifty voices. This traditional ser- vice was adapted from a service introduced at King ' s College in Cambridge, England in the 14th century and uses the old and new testaments and music to tell the story of the birth of Christ. The Concert Band performs for the annual Christmas Concert under the direction of Richard Brown. 104 Special Events Yule Season Marcia Mittelstadt leads the Concert Choir in the Christmas concert. Samuel Beckett ' s Waiting for Godot, a presentation in the theater of the absurd, was Lambuth Theater ' s third production of the 1982-83 season. Directed by Dalton Eddleman, Godot is a very unusual play which in style of presentation combines the enjoyable theatrics of ancient mime, vaudevillian antics, keystone kops ' capers, and the Marx Brothers ' vocal and visual monkeyshines. The tragicomedy in two acts is a dirge of hope deceived and de- ferred but never extinguished. It is filled with tenderness and a type of literary comic beauty and pain. Lambuth Theater ' s final production for the 1982-83 school year proved to be a drama of tenderness, pathos, and beauty. Directed by Jesse Byrum, The Glass Menagerie by the late Tennessee Williams is one of the most famous dramas of the modern theater. This play, thought by many to be an autobiography, is set in a dingy St. Louis apartment where the tragic remains of Southern gentility live in poverty. After reprimanding his mother, Tom tries to console Amanda. Laura Winfield (Michelle Hughes) is reluctant to blow out a candle that would erase her from Tom ' s mind. 108 Special Events i I Whose Life Is It Anyway? Provokes Discussion Lambuth Theater ' s ' 83 ' 84 winter production was Brian Clark ' s play Whose Life Is It Anyway? The plot of the play focuses on patient Claire Harrison (Penni Pennington), who was a successful sculptor before injuries sustained in an automobile accident left her paralyzed, clinging to life only by her life support system. In the play she fights the courts for her right to die. Struggling to save her life is Dr. Michael Emerson (Russell Moody). Margaret Hill, Claire ' s attorney (Carol Rinehart) defends her right to die. A rather innovative feature of the Lambuth Theater marked this par- ticular production. After the final performance of the play, members of a forum of five local professionals, including Dr. Russell Mclntire, who served as moderator, expressed their views and answered ques- tions from the audience on the right to die. Dr. Michael Emerson (Russell Moody) and Dr. David Scott (Robert Barnes) discuss the issue to increase or decrease medication for Claire Harrison (Penni Pennington). Unable to feed herself because of a crippling automobile accident, Claire Harrison (Penni Pennington) is assisted by her nurse (Rayla Bridges). A hub of activity surrounds Claire Harrison (Penni Pennington) during the trial for her right to die. Special Events 109 44 Anything Goes Opens Lambuth Theater ' s Season Cole Porter ' s musical Anything Goes kicked off Lam- buth ' s 1983-84 theater season. Lantern Takes a Closer Look Using as its theme Take a Closer Look , the 1983-84 Lantern staff attempted to capture in pictures and text the various facets of the Lambuth experience. The year started with excitement as plans for the new yearbook began to unfold. Organization was the keynote of the mo- ment as staff assignments were made. The highlight of the preliminary planning was Janet ' s trip to Dallas, Texas, home of our printer, Taylor Publishing Company. There Janet spent hours with the art consultant making specific plans for the overall design of the 1983-84 yearbook. Upon Janet ' s return, the staff wholeheartedly ap- plied itself to the task at hand. With the opening of school in the fall, the staff ' s sus- tained interest ensured another successful yearbook. Janet McClure, editor, discusses the theme of the Lantern with the art consultant in Dallas. The Lantern staff received a surprise visitor at its annual Christmas dinner party in the home of Dr. and Mrs. Bob Hazlewood. I Feel Pretty Serves as Theme of Miss Lambuth Pageant The words I Feel Pretty have never rung so true as for the theme of the 1983 Miss Lambuth Pageant held February 27, 1983. Miss Tennessee, Desiree Daniels, the mistress of ceremonies for the evening, greeted the large crowd gathered in the Tigrett Jr. High School auditorium to watch the contest. Damon Williams, an alumnus of Lambuth, and Tyrone Herndon of Opryland, U.S.A., also entertained. The real stars of the show, however, were the seventeen lovely and talented contestants. During the pageant, the participants were judged in four categories: individual interviews, talent, evening gown, and swim- suit. For her talent, the new Miss Lambuth, Rayla Bridges, sang You ' re the Best. A freshman music and speech and drama ma- jor from Paducah, Kentucky, Rayla won a scholarship with the crown. Because the Miss Lambuth Pageant is a preliminary com- petition for the Miss America Pageant, Rayla will compete for the title of Miss Tennessee.
