A dejected Barry Johnston wonders Why Me? ' as the whole cast stares in contempt. With a delightful combination of music and comedy, the Lambuth Theater ' s production THE AMOROUS FLEA was a prelude to spring ' s ac- tivities. An adaptation of Molier ' s School for Wives, this play focused on a doting old man, Arnolphe, and his scheme to educate his future bride, Agnes, in a shielded environment to leave her ignorant of the world. Once again the Lambuth Theater members, under the direction of Mr. Jesse Byrum, brought recognition to the school through their witty entertainment. As a part of Lambuth College ' s Fourth West Ten- nessee Designers Showcase, the INTERIOR DESIGN STUDENTS, under the direction of Professor Larry Ray, restored the home and gardens adorned with flowers and sparkling fountains. The decor in each room was characterized by a floral theme. The Floral Fantasia was the result of over 2,000 hours of work that taught students about design and landscaping while working with local designers and horticulturists. Fashion shows, luncheons, plant sales, special lec- tures, and an art exhibit were included with the tours of the estate. This well-arranged drawing room evidences the talent of interior design students. Organization and Training Mark 1985 Lantern The entire 1983 Lantern staff is deeply indebted and ge- nuinely grateful to Dr. Annie Lou Smith for the countless hours she spent in helping to organize and train the staff for the pro- duction of this yearbook. Her consistent devotion to Lambuth, her willingness to sacrifice time and energy, and her love of working with students have been a source of inspiration and encouragement for all who have been associated with her. In fact, the Lantern owes its very existence to Dr. Smith. It was her willingness to serve as faculty adviser to last year ' s year- book that made the publication of the 1982 Lantern possible. Then immediately upon its completion, she turned her total at- tention to laying the groundwork for this year ' s Lantern. The yearbook staff expresses its deep appreciation to Dr. Smith. Intellectual Life 37 Graduation Climaxes Graduating from college involves one of the most moving of human expressions, Goodbye. On May second 134 graduating seniors said goodbye to Lambuth during a memorable ceremony held on the lawn and porch in front of Spangler Hall. From the quiet dignity of the academic proces- sion through the recessional and lowering of the colors, the ceremony inspired the students to review their past at Lam- buth and eagerly to anticipate the future. Former Jacksonian Wink Martindale addressed the seniors, urging them to value their Lambuth education because it is the foundation for their moral convictions and personal success. Mr. Martindale also emphasized the importance of strong family ties. Lambuth graduates anxiously await their diplomas. After the degrees were awarded to the seniors, the retur- ning members of the class of 1932 received 50 year medallions. Three honorary degrees were presented to special guests. A Doctor of Humanities degree was confer- red upon Sarah Minnie Pearl Cannon and Sarah Wilma McCague. Homer Edward Johns received the Doctor of Divinity. During the ceremony several students received special distinction. Carol F. McDaniel, B.B.A., and Betty Carolyn Kirkman, B.S., graduated summa cum laude. Marianne Wheatley Archer received the Sigma Kappa Scholarship Award given to the senior with the highest academic average for at least 128 semester hours at Lambuth. Brent Wade Dreher was named the graduate who rendered the greatest service to the college and was awarded the Alpha Omicron Pi Outstanding Service Award. Shedric Diane Williba received the R. E. Womack Outstanding Senior Award for loyalty and service to the school. Two freshmen registration sessions provided new students with an advanced look at Lambuth and a chance to meet other incoming freshmen. Lambuth upperclassmen served as peer advisers to help freshmen effectively schedule their classes. This is Lambuth ' s second year to use the peer adviser pro- gram, which is directed by Mr. Tom Johns. In addition to registering students, peer advisers conducted tours around campus and answered the innumerable ques- tions of anxious freshmen and parents. A two week cultural tour entitled Europe in May was under the direction of Larry Ray, associate professor of art. His group visited major historical cultural sites in Holland, England, Ger- many, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, and France. Built into the itinerary were opportunities for theatrical performances, gourmet dining, shopping and touring points of interest. Dr. Walter E. Helms, professor of education, offered a two week tour entitled England and Its People. Dr. Helm ' s tour provided opportunity not only to be a tourist but also to visit and talk with teachers and children in a number of English schools. Another tour of England, entitled Our English Literary Heritage, was led by Dr. Bob Hazlewood, Professor of English. His group visited primarily sites of literary interest extending from London to Canterbury, from Winchester to Oxford, and from Stratford to the Lake District. A biological tour entitled Orientation and Field Work in Tropical Island Biology was directed by Mrs. Jo Booth, assistant professor of biology. The tour included visits to San Juan, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Tour members were able to hike and snorkel while studying the natural ecology of the area. Have an eggroll, Mr. Goldstone! 70 Organizational Life The Lambuth Theater opened its 1982-83 season with GYPSY, the musical fable based on the life of strip- per Gypsy Rose Lee. The production presented a real challenge to the technical crew. Since the Lambuth Theater was not designed to fly in backdrops in the scenery changes, the technical crew resorted to the an- cient Greek technique of the periaktoi, the forerunner of the modern revolving stage, consisting of triangular prisms with a different scene painted on each of the three sides which can be changed by revolving the triangles on their central pivots. Six periaktoi were uti- lized in staging the play. Capturing the flavor of old vaudeville, the production was a smashing success. The opening night performance was a benefit performance for Birthright. Director was Jesse Byrum, with Dalton Eddleman serving as designer and technical director, Pat Brown, choreographer, and Dick Brown, orchestral director. Enrollment increased; new faculty members were added; and exciting majors were offered for the first time. Paramount to these developments, however, were two major goals of the administration for this year: the redefining of the general educa- tion requirements in order to determine what liberal education means today; and the ses- quicentennial fund raising campaign, the most advantageous financial undertaking in the history of the college. Success in these two endeavors will ensure the academic and financial status of the college during this decade and the future. Dr. K. Transformed into a Victorian Christmas showplace, the home at 139 Campbell Street glowed with homemade ornaments, elaborately wrapped gifts, heavily embossed decorations, gingerbread, tinsel, and lace. In November the CONCERT BAND and the JAZZ BAND combined their efforts to present a Christmas concert under the direction of Dick Brown. The first section of the program presented the forty-eight piece Concert Band performing a variety of band literature, closing with the complex and beautiful Overture to Candide. In the second half the Lambuth Jazz Band performed instrumental numbers including styles characteristic of the swing era of the 40 ' s through contemporary big band jazz and rock. Following in December was the annual Madrigal Feaste, directed by Marcia Mittelstadt. The evening ' s activities featured the sixteen voices of KALEIDOSCOPE in a Madrigal concert presenting music from the late Renaissance and Baroque periods in four languages. An authentic Elizabethean dinner was served in an elaborate sixteenth century setting designed by Larry Ray. Traditional costumes for the event were designed and tailored by Lambuth students and staff. Climaxing the season on campus was the traditional Candlelight Service sponsored by the Campus Congregation and directed by Jo Fleming.
