Whether we accept them or not, they go on and they affect the people we know, the things we do and the places we live and visit. Each new semester and each new year have characteristics all their own which set them apart from the rest. The past summer at Lambuth was no exception. A few old faces were missing but new ones had somehow taken their places. The cultural interchange between the Japanese and the American stu- dents was beneficial to both groups. President Harry W. Gilmer ' s comments. The Lambuth Community was honored to host the summer orientation program of the East- West Foundation. The work of the foundation, inspired by Dr. Ken Nishimura, is increasingly important in the world of the late 20th century. People throughout the world are coming to recognize more and more the interdependence of nations and cultures. Our educational systems, our colleges and universities have given only lip service to this interdependence for the most part. We must do more than this Our Japanese student guests enriched our lives this past summer and brought a new dimension of understanding to the Lambuth Community. We hope that our guests benefited equally well from this exchange. — Dr. Harry W. Gilmer Chico Kawaoka and Mark Escue enjoy library study. Even nature in all her magnificent splendor flaunts her dramatic changes on Lambuth ' s campus. Kirk Smith During the past year, Freshman Orientation changed from fall to summer. This change gave the students the opportunity to become familiar with the campus and administration be- fore their first classes. Furthermore, it enabled them to know personally their faculty advisers. Then, too, the system of advising changed dra- matically. Advising teams, composed of a faculty member and two outstanding upper class- men, were counselors for small groups of freshmen for the entire orientation period. These counselors will continue to guide the same groups during the freshman year. Because of the con- cerned planning of Presi- dent Gilmer, Dean Sher- bine and others, all freshmen left the cam- pus with a feeling of se- curity as they faced a new experience, college life. Bringing worlds together through education encour- ages change. On July 13, 1981, worlds came together when 115 Japanese students appeared on the Lambuth campus. Eager to get a first hand glimpse of American life and a comprehensive course in English, they began a semi- nar sponsored by Lambuth College and the East-West Foundation, a Tokyo-based non-profit organization, and concluded the seminar six weeks later. Dr. Nishimura who direct- ed the program stated that the students learned much about American culture, cus- toms, and the American way- of-life. After their 25 hour-a-week training sessions were com- pleted, all but four students dispersed to 30 different col- leges. Pictured below with Peer Adviser Kay Hereford and Head Librarian Judith Hazlewood are the four who remained: Ken Saito, Norisha Shibuya, Hiroshi Toyoshima, and Masanori Hirabayash. Students were in groups from high to low, F to A. Members of Class F are in front of the John Williams Gate at Lambuth. Each sorority elects or appoints one voting delegate, and alternate delegate, and an officer of the Panhellenic Council. In addition, the presidents, rush chairmen, and advisers of the four sororities belong to the Council. The Interfra- ternity Council is composed of an officer, dele- gate, and the president of each fraternity with the faculty adviser of each as an ex-officio member. Guests enjoy the Magical Madrigal Feaste. 76 Williamsburg The evening of Lambuth ' s second Williams- burg Comes to Jackson offered a festive exper- ience during the month of December. From the first sight of the path leading to 28 Northwood where the tour began, guests exper- ienced the thrill of stepping back into time. Candles glowing from within paper bags an- chored by sand, illuminated the brick wall, at the end of which stood costumed President and Mrs. Harry Gilmer who greeted each guest with genu- ine Williamsburg hospitality. Larry Ray with his interior design students re- searched and reproduced the colonial era. The costumes designed for the Gilmers were authentic as were the natural fruit decorations. Crossing the Gilmer yard, the guests continued to the home of Dr. and Mrs. Tyler Swindle on Oakslea Place which was also decorated with the Williamsburg motif. The Lambuth men ' s spirits were not dampened, however, since the proceeds from the game went to a worthy cause — the United Way. Thanks, men, for your no- ble intentions! 91 Cheerleaders The cheerleading squad drew positive reaction from both the student body and the Lambuth community. Besides cheering for basketball games, under the leadership of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Walker, the group promoted projects to encourage good relations and to earn money for new uniforms. Some of the projects included a Spirit Party for Union University, a Fall Clinic, an Invitational Competition, a Haunted Dormitory, a Mistletoe Ball, and Lambuth Day at the mall. In his concluding statement, he challenged the faculty, stu- dents, administration, alumni, and trustees when he said: To- gether we must seek again as others did before us to identify those values which we believe to be paramount, which we believe enhance our humanity and answer the deep spiritual quest for the meaning of our human existence. And that once identified, we consciously affirm them and put them into practice in this aca- demic community. During these 20 years, Dr. Wilder was involved not only with every phase of the Lambuth College community but also with all presidents who have served the college in its present location. In an interview with Dr. Wilder in 1976, Michael L. Lawrence, a former student, assessed Dr. Wilder ' s career as follows: Only a combination of professional descriptions could characterize Dr. James S. Wilder, Jr., scholar, administrator, educator and cleric. Since 1962, when he was elected president of Lambuth College in Jackson, Tennessee, this Florida native has proved himself worthy of all of these titles by serving as a distinguished servant, an able executive, a progressive academician and an experienced pastor. In acquiring a new computer system, Lambuth has made provision for its future wellbeing and has at the same time opened new doors of opportunity and devel- opment in the life of the college. With the addition of a DEC 11 70 model that has several terminals in various classes and offices all over campus, the new system allows several people to be on the computer simultaneously. Two line printers permit students to operate and receive report print-outs with- out interfering with administrative reports being generat- ed by the second printer. It also supports several lan- guages. The Math and Physics Department uses the BASIC programming language, whereas the Business Data Processing Department makes use of COBOL, FORTRAN, and RPG II. Primary administrative offices using the computer are the registrar ' s office, the business office, financial aid office, development office, and the library. The new system will be able to process information much more effectively and efficiently, a convenience which will re- sult in an overall cost reduction for the college. Dr. Billie P. Exum, Mr. John Bonson, and Mr. David Ogden are elated over the new computer system. 116 Mrs. Jean Creasy demonstrates a cooking method for her students. This atmosphere is developed through interdisciplinary courses which challenge both students and faculty to discuss knowledge gained through reading material which conveys the history of humankind, including his thoughts, his art, his religion, and his discoveries. In the process of such discussions, participants are encouraged, even required, to question their values and beliefs. After intense evaluation, many grasp a better view of their own ideas and a more open mind toward the opinion of others. Honor Program After the adoption of the Lambuth College Honors Program in the spring of 1978, Dr. Charles Mayo was appointed director of the program. As director, he selected and recruited new honors students, served as an adviser for these students in relation to the Honors Program, taught in all six semesters of the program, coordinated faculty selection to the program, and guided the comprehensive planning of the newly designed program at Lambuth. I had no idea how much time and patience I would have to expend; nor did I have any idea how frustrating it would be to begin the Lantern in October rather than in May. Furthermore, I did not realize what it would be like to accept the responsibilities of orga- nizing a staff, selecting a theme, designing the yearbook, supervising its construction, and meeting all deadlines in a brief four-month period. Naturally, I was deeply concerned about my role and its challenge; but when each page was completed and each deadline was met, I felt less frustration because I could see how the parts would eventually equal the whole. I can assure the Editor of the 1983 Lantern that he will have fewer concerns because a staff has been select- ed and plans have been made. Without the help of many people, I could never have completed my role. With humility I want to express my deep appreciation to the Lantern staff, the administration and staff of the college, all faculty members, and the profes- sional photographer. In addition, I want to express a very big special thanks ' to my adviser and friend, Dr. Annie Lou Smith, who without her constant help and guidance I would never have made it. Moreover, I want to give my greatest thanks to the Lord who always gave me strength and who kept me from unravelling before the Lantern was finished. To leave the reader with one last thought is my desire. Life is like a yearbook. What one sees on the surface isn ' t much unless he has memories to back it up. — Judy French Editor in Chief Judy French Tommy Malone Terry Ownby Kevin Conrad and Marianne Wheatley Archer Bridget McKamey Lori Thomas Michelle Fisher Anne Miles and Susie Ross Juanita Parham and Judy Smith Christy Rauchle and Debbie Thompson Beth Gaddie Terri Rhodes Bill Crawford Sally Hardgrave Belinda Ha and Ann Moffet Marianne Wheatley Archer Belinda Ha Juanita Parham, Sally Hardgrave, Judy Smith and Janet McClure Editor in Chief Managing Editor Business Manager Copy Editors Layout Editor Art Editor Photographic Editor Honor Societies Editors Organizations Editors Greek Editors Publications Editor Activities Editor Athletics Editor Administration Editor Curriculum Editors Honors Program Editor Divisions Editor Classes Editors Photographers Bob Pierce, Beth Gaddie, Neil Sharp, Kyle Boswell, Regina Duncan, Teri Rhodes Advertisements Angie Howard, Lisa Ogle, Laurie Norville, Martha Miller, Ferrel Marcus, Kim Wilson, Ken Hooper Dr. Annie Lou Smith Adviser
