Let us also remember that just as the ' 79 Lantern symbolizes the light given us by the Lambuth family so it will continue to illuminate our paths as we pursue our various endeavors. In years to come when we look back on our days at Lambuth, we shall cherish this pictorial history because through its pages we shall relive our happy college days. For fifty-two years the Lantern, so named by Professor Emeritus Arthur D. Oxley, has highlighted each year ' s activities with the exception of one year during World War II. Although there have been changes in our society, growth in our city and college, and conflicts in the entire world, all relating to our college, the Lantern continues to reflect our rich heritage. -«w: wn With each year ' s orientation period, new life comes to the campus as freshmen begin their pursuit of knowledge. At times academic life seems to be a burden but challenges are always present to demand the best from the entire college community. We shall remember with sad- ness the failures, with joy the achievements; but we shall profit from both types of experiences as we venture into a world of harsh reality. . Ambiguous feelings are cap- tured in the pages of the ' 79 Lantern. 11 Four years earlier, we stood at the crossroads of life. But this time, we are armed not only with knowledge, but also with a spirit of determination and faith that with God all things are possible. These spiritual elements are benefits from our life here at Lambuth College. Our spirits have been lit with the fire to succeed, to accept challenges, to overcome defeats, to forge a path where none exists. The Lambuth herit- age is ours. Our goal is now to use it well. We do not know what the future holds, or what our hearts desire, but we know the tools with which to begin. 12 iKi y. v ft .fiU; JT J ; 1U4 1 t r. Finally, brethren, whatsoever things arc; true, whatsoever things arc honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things arc; lovely, whatsoever things are of good report: if there be any virtue;, and if there be any praise, think on these things. — Phil. 4:8 13 14 CAMPUS LIFE Lambuth Presents First Dinner Theatre Ending the regular season, the Lambuth Theatre presented a delightful comedy, LIFE WITH FATHER, under the direction of Mr. Jesse Byrum during the week of May 2-6, 1978. In recent years the recording of history on tape has attracted increasing public attention with hundreds of oral history programs underway in every state and around the world. The Lambuth oral history recording, processing, and dissemination began only last year (1977-78) by the students of the journalism class under joint direction of the instructor, Dr. Annie Lou Smith, Professor of English and Mrs. Judith Hazlewood, Head Librarian of the Luther L. Gobbel Library. Through extensive research and personal, tape-recorded interviews, the journalism students process into printed form a historical article on each of the interviewees. Mrs. Hazlewood files these articles and tapes with other historical data in the library. These programs now include pre-architecture, interior design, and fashion merchandising. The big event of the Fall Semester was the Gone With the Wind fashion show featuring designs by Jeanne Dudley Smith of Nashville. The Designer ' s Showhouse, a repeat of last year ' s spectacular success, was a major event in the Spring Semester. Also this year, Joanna Ross added stained glass to the options in the Design courses. Students learned about the history of stained glass and also how to cut it and to lead the pieces into panels. Designer Showhouse Draws Attention One of Lambuth ' s most exciting and fastest growing areas is Interior Design. Last spring the Interior Design Department sponsored a West Tennessee Designer Showhouse which was open to the public and attended by about 3000 persons. An 1870 house in the historic East Main section of Jackson was completely restored by the students with the help of 19 Tennessee Design firms. This project will be repeated this spring. This fall the Interior Design Program has been broadened to include a Fashion Design and Merchandising major. Courses in Fashion Illustration and Fashion History are also being included. To officially launch the major, famous designers Nieman Marcus and Jeanne Smith, who designs for such people as Joan Kennedy. Priscilla Presley, and Linda McCartney, came to Lambuth and held a spectacular Fall Fantasia Fashion Show which was attended by 600 persons. 119 Biology Department Attracts Students With Enthusiasm Biology, the study of life, is clearly reflected in the atmosphere and surroundings of the Biology Department. A stroll through the Department reveals numerous aquariums teeming with the miracle of life that intrigues visi tors for long periods of time. Under the sponsorship of the Center for the Study of American Business, these guest lec turers have brought us a wealth of expertise and information. Added to the Business Administration and Economics Department, Mr. Wilburn Lane teaches the areas of management and market. In addition he will also direct the night school program at Lambuth. Although nothing new in courses or majors was offered in the department this year, the Hotel and Restaurant Management major was combined with the Management major. Students will be able to take the specialized courses needed in Hotel-Restaurant Management, but the major will be in Management. Above left: Mr. Peters works at computer. The program was approved by the State Board of Education thus insuring these majors of a comprehensive certification in Special Edu cation and making Lambuth one of the pioneer colleges in this field in Tennessee. Dr. Earl Zehr was added to the department to give impetus to this program. The year was marked by a self study for the department, in preparation for a State Department team visit to re-acredit both elementary and secondary programs of certification. In recent years the department has been approved to offer Kindergarten, Library Science, and Educable Mentally Retarded programs leading to certification. Certification programs in Speech and Hearing and some thirty other areas combine with the above programs to make Lambuth a widely recognized institution for teacher preparation. Staff members are active in the work of organizations relating to professional education and they serve as members on State and National Committees. The staff provides consultant services to area schools and furnishes members for both State and Southern Association accreditation teams. 125 -.
