At Lambuth each INDIVIDUAL represents a thread that is intricately woven into the encompass- ing pattern of college life. Within this symbolic pattern there are threads of bright and sombre hues, smooth and coarse textures, broad and narrow dimen- sions. Each thread has a purpose which complements the whole. As the original pattern is supplemented by the ever-increasing number of individual threads, it still remains a unified entity which grows more beautiful and more nearly perfect with each addition. It is to you, the INDIVIDUAL, the thread, that the LANTERN Staff of 1965 dedicates this yearbook . . .

) 1 Just as America is a melt- ing-pot of nationalities, races, and creeds, Lambuth has be- come increasingly a melting pot of personalities, purposes, and ideals. Like our ancestors who brought various customs and heritages from the Old World to the New, every in- dividual who arrives in this New World of college brings certain aspirations, experi- ences, and preconceived ideas. Paradoxically, America ' s greatness and weaknesses stem from a variety of assimilated cultures and opinions. Simi- larly, Lambuth is made both weaker and stronger by the conflicts which assimilation inevitably brings. Just as pa- triotism is not blind, flag- waving praise, so love of a college means more than a sentimental nostalgia for the place where we have learned, experienced, and matured. It is not true that love is blind. We love persons not because of, but in spite of, what they are. The same is true of love for an institution or a com- munity. It is this deeper, more steadfast love which is strong enough to endure in spite of our failures and our weak- nesses as a community. When we really become involved in our community, we realize that its weaknesses are our own human weaknesses. But we must see clearly our fail- ures and weaknesses and face them honestly in order to im- prove ourselves and our cam- pus community . . .
