Like our ancestors who brought various customs and heritages from the Old World to the New, every in- dividual who arrives in this New World of college brings certain aspirations, experi- ences, and preconceived ideas. Paradoxically, America ' s greatness and weaknesses stem from a variety of assimilated cultures and opinions. Simi- larly, Lambuth is made both weaker and stronger by the conflicts which assimilation inevitably brings. Just as pa- triotism is not blind, flag- waving praise, so love of a college means more than a sentimental nostalgia for the place where we have learned, experienced, and matured. It is not true that love is blind. We love persons not because of, but in spite of, what they are. The same is true of love for an institution or a com- munity. It is this deeper, more steadfast love which is strong enough to endure in spite of our failures and our weak- nesses as a community. When we really become involved in our community, we realize that its weaknesses are our own human weaknesses. But we must see clearly our fail- ures and weaknesses and face them honestly in order to im- prove ourselves and our cam- pus community . . . At Lambuth each INDIVIDUAL represents a thread that is intricately woven into the encompass- ing pattern of college life. Within this symbolic pattern there are threads of bright and sombre hues, smooth and coarse textures, broad and narrow dimen- sions. Each thread has a purpose which complements the whole. As the original pattern is supplemented by the ever-increasing number of individual threads, it still remains a unified entity which grows more beautiful and more nearly perfect with each addition. It is to you, the INDIVIDUAL, the thread, that the LANTERN Staff of 1965 dedicates this yearbook . . . ' ■. ' . ' - ' ■■' ■.; ■fl - : -lilfcr-aiB K • wUBl v ■■Bl s B B? Harris Hall, an air-conditioned residence hall for Upperclasswomen, ac- commodates 122 students. Sprague Hall, the residence hall for Freshman women, was erected in 1953. Epworth Hall, the residence hall for Freshman men, was built in 1929-30 and renovated in 1960. The Richard E. Womack Physical Education Building, constructed in 1947-48, is a beau- tiful brick structure which houses classrooms, offices, shower rooms and the gymnasium. The Men ' s New Dormitory, an air-conditioned residence hall for Upperclassmen, was first occupied in 1959. 20 I m J. A. Once again the Omega Omicron chapter of Alpha Omicron Pi gathered for its annual rush retreat near Lexington, Tennessee. There the girls spent three busy days making favors, designing invitations, practicing skits, and completing all final plans for rush. Arriving on campus with renewed spirit and enthusiasm, the AOPi ' s plunged into a most exciting rush season. After five hectic but thrilling days of parties and work sessions, the week was climaxed by pledging twenty-six girls. Following the impressive pledge service in the chapel of Saturday, September 26, the AOPi ' s and their new pledges celebrated by dancing to the sounds of the Cavaliers at Northside Lions ' Club. In October, the local chapter celebrated its seventh anniversary as a national sorority on the Lambuth campus, and Mrs. Hampton, the chapter advisor, served the girls refreshments. October also brought the annual AOPi Supper which was held in the student center. Through this endeavor, the chapter raised a large sum of money which was applied to the philanthropic project. In November two AOPi ' s added honor to the chapter by being chosen cheerleaders and several AOPi ' s participated in the Feed Jackson Day project for the new Youth Town of Jackson. The Christmas spirit descended in the successful party for the welfare children. Also this month, the AOPi ' s remembered their four founder ' s at their annual Founder ' s Day Banquet held at the Holiday Inn. Following the banquet the girls were joined by their dates for the Rose Ball. Many tedious hours were spent on decorations for the oars for the Homecoming Parade and their efforts won the trophy for the best decorated car. To honor their big sisters, the pledges entertained with a dance at the Northside Lions ' Club, and the next day Initiation Ritual was held with Jennifer Hefley being named pledge of the year. Afterwards the alumnae served the actives and initiates dinner at Lambuth Memorial Church. And in this month, the AOPi ' s joined with the other sororities in having the first Panhellenic Formal. March 3 was a big night for the AOPi ' s as they presented their annual musical, Moments to Remember. The proceeds went to the Frontier Nursing Service in Kentucky. In April the girls entertained the faculty and administration at a coffee follow- ing a faculty meeting. May found the seniors of AOPi facing graduation. Seniors who will soon be gone but will be well remembered. The flame of Alpha Xi Delta was lit on April 17, 1893, at Lombard College by ten young women. These founders based their ideals for this organization on sister- hood and purity. From these women grew the national fraternity, Alpha Xi Delta, one of the ten original members of the National Panhellenic Council. The year 1957 marked the beginning of Alpha Xi Delta on the Lambuth Campus. From this time forth, the Alfuzzies have been active participants in activities of the college. The sorority girls industriously began the school year ' 64- ' 65 with a pre-rush school in Jackson. At this time the girls made all the arrangements for rush. Next came one of the most exciting and fun-filled experiences of sorority life, the rush- ing of new girls, and finally the receiving of the new pledges. Upon acquiring these pledges, the sorority members enjoyed a cook-out at the house of one of the alums. After formally pledging, the new girls, the actives honored them with a ring dinner at which the pledges were presented Alpha Xi Delta rings. The month of November was very busy for the Alfuzzies. The girls gave a tea for their alumnae and honored guests in the sorority room, and on November 19, the Alfuzzies and their dates enjoyed a gala evening in the banquet room of the Holiday Inn. The band engaged for the party was the Impalas of Jackson. The most significant feature of the month of December for the sorority girls was the Christmas party given by the pledges. At this party, gifts were exchanged, the pledges receiving sorority charm bracelets and the actives receiving sorority plaques. With January came the beginning of a new year, and in order to assist charity, the sorority girls served at the Heart Fund Banquet. In this month the Alfuzzies joined everyone else in the preparations for the Homecoming parade. Also in February, the girls took part in one of the most meaningful ceremonies in the frater- nity life, the initiation service. Then came the biggest event of the year, the Pan- hellenic Formal. March brought with its gusty winds the installation of officers. And, after par- ticipating in All Sing in April, the girls celebrated their founding on April 17, with a luncheon at the New Southern Hotel. May brought the Quill Banquet at the Thunderbird Motel, and at this time awards were presented and girls holding im- portant campus positions were recognized. The following recognitions were made to the rest of the group. The sorority boasts a member of the All College Social Committee, president of Delta Psi Omega, members of Lambda Iota Tau, member of Religious Life Council, sorority editor of the Lambuth Lantern, and vice president of the dormitory. The sorority, Alpha Xi Delta, symbolizes love and sisterhood for all women. Perhaps this song of the girls of Alpha Xi can best express the true meaning of the fraternity: Above the gold and blue Stands an Alpha Xi Her Quill is there to guide you Through eternity. Each pearl stands as a symbol Of Love and Loyalty, So come and stand among us, The girls of Alpha Xi. 86 WAA fOia Pat Johnson Vice President Pledge Trainer Norma Kay Allen Gloria Busby Pat Caldwell Ann Champion Linda Davidson Kathy Hood Janie Jones Marilyn Kirksey Thomas Vivian Lee Anna Mullins Ann Muse Elizabeth Muse Judy Raines Arleen Ress Jane Starnes Mary Tinker Sara Hines President Carol Green — Pledges of the Year — Ellen Ward NOT PICTURED Joy Hopper Ann Braden LaNita Doddridge QIGMA KAPPA aom kappa SKSA A KAPPA Sisterhood is evidenced in preparing for Home- coming. The Sigmas displayed the Chrimstas spirit by Christmas caroling on the campus and in the surrounding area. Since the national organization of Sigma Kappa Sorority was founded in 1874 at Colby College, Waterville, Maine, it has grown to a membership of over 40,000 members and is one of the six national sororities with over 100 local chapters. In June of 1964, representatives of the Gamma Xi chapter at Lambuth joined sister chapters from the various parts of the United States in Hot Springs, Arkansas, for the 62nd National Convention. This chapter served as hostess for the Life Mem- bership Luncheon and received a scholarship award of a piece of silver service. At the convention everyone donned campaign buttons, for Senator Margaret Chase Smith, a Sigma Kappa, and was delighted to meet another sister, the distinguished author, Lillian Budd, who wrote a book on sorority and Panhellenic life entitled One Heart, One Way. The last week in August was spent in retreat as the Sigma Kappas prepared for rush. Indeed the efforts were rewarded, as quota was made with the ribboning of twenty-six pledges in September. The last week in September brought pledge pins to replace ribbons, a Big Sister for each girl, and a hot dog supper to help get acquainted. In part of an effort to promote better inter-sorority relations, the ' 64- ' 65 pledge class of Sigma Kappa entertained the pledges of Alpha Xi Delta and Alpha Omicron Pi with a popcorn party. The social calendar moved into October and brought a visit from the Sigma Kappa National President, Mrs. Edward Douglas. The first date party also fell this month, as the girls entertained with a spaghetti supper and a dance following. To end this month, the Sigmas were saluted as they received honors of Who ' s Who, class officers, Student Council members, cheerleaders. S.C.A. council representatives, SNEA officer, and dormitory president. November brought the ninetieth year of S igma Kappa as Founder ' s Day was celebrated on the ninth with a dinner and program. The traditional Mother-Daughter Tea was held in the home of an alum, Mrs. Burns Hicks. As part of philanthropic efforts, the chapter provided a talent show for the patients at Western State Hospital, in Bolivar, Tennessee. December began with a date party celebrated with the music of the Marvels. The members celebrated the Yuletide Season by singing to the campus community and residents of Jackson. Holiday snacks, and the exchange of gifts climaxed the evening of caroling. Second semester began as the sorority strived to maintain its rating of first scholastically among the sororities. Good grades were shown as twenty pledges earned their pins and prepared for the day of initiation. To celebrate the ending of pledgeship, the pledges held the annual Pillow Party and presented a resume of the memories of being Sigma pledges. February twentieth brought the day that each active and alum relived as her own, as pledges became actives and a banquet was held at the New Southern Hotel with Mrs. Erin Moreno, National Recommendations Chairman, as the special guest speaker. Martha Sue Anderson received the award for Pledge of the Year. All enjoyed being together for the occasion. Again this month this chapter was honored as four of the Sigma sisters were named Homecoming Queen and court. The following months saw the Sigmas active in the annual spring retreat, All- Sing, Panhellenic Workshop, Date party, money-making projects, various gerontology projects, clan gatherings, senior luncheon, and graduation day. However, we Sigmas will remember many things other than the surface indications of our sister- hood as evidenced by campus, social and scholastic activities. The deeper meanings of lifetime friendships and spiritual experiences will be cherished by every Sigma girl as she strives to be a living symbol of the sorority motto — One Heart, One Way. Delta Sigma Phi, the Fraternity of Engineered Leadership, has had a very successful year, which started as usual with rush. This year ' s first rush party was held at our new fraternity house with Jill Welty,- Dream Girl, as the hostess; then came the formal party at the New Southern Hotel in the Gold Room with the entertainment by the Sunderland Singers from Mem- phis. At last came the acceptance of bids and the organization of a new pledge class and all that goes with being a pledge. The next major event was the initiation of five pledges from the last semester; of course, all the old actives had fun, but those five pledges were glad when it was over. After this came the start of intramurals . . . tennis, flag football, ping pong, and in the final analysis, one can say that Per- haps the reward of the spirit who tries is not the goal but the exercise. When December 10 came around, Founder ' s Day was the big event at the Downtowner Banquet Room. That night Dr. James S. Wilder, Jr. spoke on the theme, Four Signposts Upon the Road to Success ; the brothers and alums both enjoyed the speech and the fraternity friendship and bond. Our pledges entertained all the brothers at our annual Christmas Party at the house. During the evening big brothers and little brothers exchanged their more serious gifts as well as exchanging gifts with Mrs. McCague, Jill Welty, and Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Cummings. Before the Christmas holidays the Delta Chi Chapter had the surprise of welcoming two pledges from our chapter at Wisconsin State University in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Paul and Jay came down to Lambuth on a pledge project which prescribed the completion of certain duties on the Lambuth campus. Amazingly, the whole trip of about 800 miles took only one weekend for they had to be back in time for 7:00 classes and mid-term exams on Monday. On February 13, Homecoming Day arrived with all the excitement of a big parade, a sensational ballgame with Sewanee, the fellowship with friends ' and alumni, and finally the Homecoming Dance that night. As the rest of the school year goes by, the Delta Sigs will have another initiation for last semester ' s pledges, election of the new officers, and the selection of a new Dream Girl and Mother. All the Delta Sigs want to wish Mama McCague the best after she leaves Lambuth; Mama McCague has done so much for us that the words here would not be enough to thank her for it. Finally the Delta Sigs and their dates will go to Pilot Knob for their annual Sailor ' s Ball. Kappa Alpha Order, living up to the distinction of being an Order and not just another college fraternity, has had another prosperous and progres- sive year at Lambuth College. Gamma Omicron Chapter has never been a lagging group and this year has been no exception to the step-by-step progress made each year. Of course, the most important single event to us was the acquisition of a house. During the year our house has come to mean a great deal to us as a gathering place for some Old Southern-type Brotherhood, and, though of a temporary nature to us, we have been proud and pleased to have our Burkett address this year. As usual Rush was the hectic grind for the Actives and the same be- wildering spotlight of attention for the rushees y but when the smoke cleared, Gamma Omicron had twenty-seven pledges for our largest pledge class yet. After a semester ' s cultivation seventeen of these pledges were initiated into the ranks of our Brotherhood, adding new blood to our Chapter and new pride to the Order. Hal Vought was named Pledge of the Year by the Actives, and the pledges saw Bill Rudolph as the outstanding active. Homecoming this year was a great event to Lambuth KA ' s as it should be for everyone. With parties and open house all weekend, the Chapter welcomed alumni and helped build school spirit for the eventual conquering of Sewanee. Homecoming decorations were a surprise to almost everyone this year, and, though caught by surprise, our Chapter showed what men can do when the occasion arises, and we walked away with the beautiful trophy that was awarded. Intramurals were the same stiff competition this year. We are proud of our showing which was highlighted by a perfect basketball record and good showings in ping pong and volleyball. Naturally Old South Week was our social highlight of the campus as it is every year. With two parties, a parade, and other festivities it was a week never to be forgotten. Other parties saw Gamma Omicron bring in well-known bands and for one occasion an impromptu band comprised of our own talent assembled at the house. There were also Spring gatherings on the shores of some of our well-known near-by lakes. Yes, all things considered, it has been a very good year for Kappa Alpha and Gamma Omicron at Lambuth. Second semester this year ushered the men of the Epsilon Psi Chapter of Kappa Sigma into a new era — that of having their own home. This well- furnished house located on Maple Street has added much to the prestige and brotherhood of the fraternity and will indeed be an asset in the future. Rush was highly successful for Kappa Sigma this year. An elaborate buffet dinner at Georgia ' s proved to be a highlight of the week. Alumni advisor, John Hartman ' s speech on What Kappa Sigma Means To Me was overwhelming as was the food served at the traditional hangout. A get- together at John Bonson ' s afterwards was a tremendous success. As a result of rush Kappa Sig pledged 28 men. We received a good deal of rush aid from Mom Travis and our sweetheart Beverly Johnson. Kappa Sigma then began a year of diligent work and social activities. Epsilon Psi Chapter worked both for others and for themselves. A Christ- mas project in association with our sister sorority Chi Omega at Union University provided a needly family with a much-appreciated Christmas. We also participated in the annual Lion ' s Club paper sale for charity. To promote Kappa Sigma and maintain finances we held a car wash, several workdays and sold savings bonds. The Scholarship Trophy was awarded to Kappa Sigma first semester — our having had the highest scholastic average among the fraternities. The Kappa Sig ' s had an undefeated football team, and Mickey Gilbert ran first in Cross Country to launch a hardy defense of the Intramural Championship. Kappa Sigma is a pacesetter in Greek social life. Theme parties, such as the annual Beatnik Party, have been interspersed with regular parties. The Gold Room of the New Southern Hotel accommodated our Founder ' s Day Banquet, a smorgasbord-dinner dance, commemorating our founding at the University of Virginia on December 19, 1869. It was at this banquet awards were presented to four deserving Kappa Sigmas.
