Memphis Conference Female Institute AHEAD LAMBUTH COLLEGE JACKSON, TENNESSEE Existing Plant Explanation of Numerals Present Development Build — II Remodel — III o o Future Plans IV HE PA On December 2, 1843, the Methodists of the Memphis conference received a charter in the General Assembly of the State of Tennessee for a female institute to be located in Jackson, Tennessee. The Memphis Conference Female Institute thrived until 1920, dispensing culture and refinement principally to young ladies of the Lower Mississippi Valley. Then in 1921, at the annual Memphis Conference, it was agreed that there should be established at Jackson a co-educational institution of standard college grade. Accordingly, M.C.F.I. ' s charter was amended, the college took the name of Lambuth College, and, on September, 1924, the doors were opened to both men and women students. Lambuth was moved to a new location, one of the most beautiful sites in the northwest sector of Jackson. oLctmbutn sd C xpctndina • • • These buildings are no longer a dream, but a reality in ' 53. To him Lambuth owes much ; his spirit has so inter- mingled with Lambuth ' s that it is difficult to distinguish between the two. We are privileged to dedicate this year ' s Lantern to a gentleman, a friend, a scholar, but above all a truly devoted Christian — Luther L. Gobbel, Ph.d. J rom Jhe j ' resident J oUesk Lambuth is alive and growing. A hardy plant rooted deep in West Tennessee soil and in the affections of students, alumni, and friends, it faces the future in confidence. One of its assets is its realization of need to grow a bit faster and to produce more abundant fruit. Its success in doing so is guaranteed in the measure in which it receives nurture and nourishment from those who own it and enjoy its fruitage, specifically the Memphis Conference and the student body, both of which are manifesting loyal and determined support. The year 1952-53 will stand out in Lambuth ' s history as epochal. The privilege of entering into Lam- buth ' s rich heritage and sharing in its dev elopment is matched by a commitment to give my best to help make it increasingly worthy of the young men and young women who are its present and future students and of the great Memphis Conference. Bill Scott, a transfer from Western Kentucky, filled the vacancy left by Brother Tom and led the Eagles to a record scoring year. Behind Bill in the pivot, guards Charles Carter and Kenton Burnette provided ac- curate shooting from out. Jerry Couch and Bill Burnette drove hard from the forward posts. These boys rounded out the first five, but Coach Roscoe Williams had a number of top subs to call upon. They were Gerald Mays, Jerry Corlew, Howard Laumann, Richard Fly, Charles Bray, and Thomas Phillips.
