Text from Pages 1 - 88 of the 1946 volume:

The Lantern 1946 Lambuth College, Jackson, Tennessee With the coming of Peace in the summer of 1945, Lambuth College prepared to open its doors for a greater September enrollment and something of a new era. The years of war had made themselves firmly recognizable on the campus, but September, 1945 proved to be a brilliant example of the traditional strength and power of the institution. A larger enrollment than Lambuth had known since pre-war days registered the fall quarter and each quarter of the 1945-1946 session showed a marked increase in those who returned to Lambuth and those who were a part of the college for the first time. Every person who is a part of Lambuth College is happy to acknowledge with undying gratitude the efforts of those who have represented our college in the war just ended. It is with a great deal of joy that we see many of them back on the campus. But with sadness we cherish the ardent hope, faith, love, purity, and loyalty of those who did not return. As the staff of The Lantern worked to prepare this copy for you, we did not forget the greatness of the cause for which Lambuth College stands. It is our desire that this edition of The Lantern be an exemplification of the untiring labors of those who administer and those who receive the new experience of modern education here. We have enjoyed preparing this edition of The Lantern. May it serve its purpose well! I?7t THE LA Lambuth College, f - .- 1945-46 NTERN Jackson, Tennessee Property of , TABLE OF CONTENTS A dministration Classes Features Student Life Organization A dvertisements D E D I I O N MISS RUTH MARR One of the most conscientious persons on our campus is one who has served many hundreds of students as they have come and gone from Lambuth College. Her accurate records, her willingness to serve every person on the campus, and her capability as an administrator merits the appreciation and devotion of all of the students and faculty members. In recognition of all she means to Lambuth —to MISS RUTH MARR, we are privileged to dedicate the 1945-46 edition of The Lantern. R. E. WOMACK, B.A., M.A., LL.D. PRESIDENT Dr. Richard E. Womack has become in the course of the short life of Lambuth College an inseparable part of all she has done in this section of the country. All of the honor, admiration, and appreciation of those whom Lambuth has served is based upon the untiring efforts of our president. The high standards of idealism which Lambuth has always cherished have been lived before us all in the char- acter and personality of our chief administrator, whom we recognize as genuinely Christian and profoundly a part of all of the basic principles of higher learning. The Deans M. E. Eagle B.A., M.A. Professor of History Dean of College Dean as he is known to all Lambuth stu- dents is one of the outstanding personalities on the campus. He is always willing to help every person in light of his own particular needs. He is admirably fitted for the Dean ' s desk, possess- ing a personality and philosophy which is sel- dom equaled. Emily Hastings Clark B.A., M.A. Professor of Social Science Dean of Women Mrs. Clark is an interesting person, well-fitted for the job as councelor and advisor to the women students. She is efficient, poised, and possesses a rare personality which makes her a friend to all of us. A. D. Oxley B.A., M.A. Professor of Biology Dean of Men Mr. Oxley ' s unique philosophy as taught in his classes and in his personal contacts with the students has made him one of our most confi- dent friends. In his kind and understanding manner he has become a definite part of Lam- buth. The RUTH MARR B.S. in Ed., A.M. Professor of Education gertrude i. Due to the small enrollment during the war, personal contacts have not been what they might have been under normal conditions. It is the sincere hope of all that the high principles and strong character developed here may be seen by others wherever those students may go and in whatever occupation they may choose. 12 DOROTHY WILLIAMS, A.B. VISION STAFF THE LANTERN MARY TORII, Editor HARRELL TOWNSEND Business Manager With this our first peacetime session in four years the Lantern staff has tried to present an annual that will be worthy of all the people who tried to uphold the Lambuth tradition both here and on foreign fields. The Lantern did not go to press without many hard hours of work behind it but we feel confident it was well worth our time and effort. Both the faculty and students have been extremely con- siderate and to them we give our sincere appreciation. The coach, Dr. Melzer, took a group of boys who had never played together, and by the end of the season had de- veloped a good team. The in- terest in basketball has been revived. Next year, we are ex- pecting great things from the team. H. VAUGHN Forward D. WHEATLEY Guard D. PETTIGREW J. BRYANT Guard Forward J. C. DAVIS A. LOONEY Center Center 70 M. R. SAUNDERS Forward J.
