Despite the many obstacles that confronted us, we succeeded in attaining our goal. Our faculty advisers, Miss Monaco and Miss Mallette, were always present to help us over the rougher parts of the journey. This issue of Hiltopia will for many years call to mind our friends and the experiences never to be forgotten, though dimmed with the passing of time. It is our sincerest desire that the success of this year- book encourage the succeeding classes to follow in our footsteps, and keep the line of Hiltopia5 un- broken in the years to come. Though we now take leave of our Alma Mater, we shall never forget the years spent here-for they were the happiest of our life. No matter how far afield we roam, our loyalty and devotion will always remain steadfast. MOUNT HOOD NOVEMBER 10, 1944 So nigh is grandeur to our dust So near is God to man, When Duty whispers low, Thou must, The youth replies, I can. -Ralph Waldo Emerxofz SENIOR CLASS AUTOGRAPHS THE CLASS HISTORY It was exactly four years ago, on the morning of 155 September 3, 1941, when we wide-eyed Freshmen came iq N : trudging up the hill. We were full of wonder 'as to lfrll LX what lay before us, for this was indeed a new world. 641, 2 We found our way as best we could amid the rapid fire of directions from all sides by the soft-spoken upper- classmen. What a predicament we were in! We got settled at last, and held our first class meeting. What noise we made! Elections were the first business on the agenda. Bruz Hamilton was voted our President, john Prall, Vice President, Daris Slack, Secretary, and Gladys Myers, Treasurer. Insofar as activities were concerned, we wanted everything from dances to -wrestling matches, but we wound up with a pie and cake sale and made the stupendous profit of 51518.00 We were rich indeed!!! Because we were such a big bad bunch, however, we never had a chance at anything else. The time passed so swiftly that before we realized it mid-year exams .were upon us. As all good students, we crammed and studied hours on end trying to stuff into our little heads all that had whizzed by us during the past half year. Bravely we faced the music. The ordeal finally over, we eagerly awaited the marks. Then came the bombshell! The exams had to be retaken! Imagine how chagrined we were-just when we thought our necks were saved for the next few months. For this we are grateful to, and wish to thank, those persons and individuals and would-be underground workers whose efforts resulted in the passing out of the examination questions just a little too early- that is, before the exams were scheduled. Not that it would have made a great difference, but then, that is life! School rolled merrily along until one day our principal, Mr. Davidson, was called to the colors. We were very sad at his having to leave us so soon- he had won a place in our hearts, we were proud, however, that one of our faculty members would be in the thick of it. Then, before we knew it, a whole year had rolled by, June had come, and it was time to leave our new world. We were a little smarter, perhaps, gand found satisfaction in knowing that next year we would be old hands at the game. rf' . I. ef' a'dj,',, Come September, we once again made our way up Y 95 c' the now familiar hill, climbed the endless steps, and were -Q ! again ready to begin our laborious studies. As proud 7 ' Sophomores we were a little more settled, perhaps, than W- we were the year before, and so looked forward to a year gQq,6g-8 crammed full of fun and frolic. Most of the faculty that had guided us through our first year were no longer with us. Mr. Ricketts succeeded Mr. Davidson, our former principal. It seemed that the students were bent on being bnery this year, for more than one class experienced the thrill of writing a gruesome 1,000 word composition on good behavior. But it was not long before the new teachers and pupils became fast friends. We held our first class meeting of the year to determine who our class oHicers would be. After much deliberation the following were elected to fill rhe offices: Phillip Ollio, President, joseph DiSalvi, Vice President, Helen Carducci, Secretary, and Gladys Myers, Treasurer. How well we recall the feud between the juniors and Sophomores over the scrap drive. Now, how was it that the whole thing began? It seems that there was much arguing about which class would come out on top in the drive. The Juniors boasted they'd win, or else! The scrap flew fast and furious from all sides, and then, the day of reckoning! The score-board listed the Seniors first, Sophomores second, juniors third, and Freshmen last. What rejoicing! Then some member of our class got the bright idea of sending the poor grieving juniors a sympathy card. But, alas, that person spelled the word Sophomores wrong. We received a dictionary in return for this breach of etiquette. We had no time for trivial matters. Our minds were occupied with plans to fill the class treasury. The most significant event both financially and otherwise was our St. Valentine's Dance. Of course, we could not be sophisticated enough to plan the affair in advance. It was decided at the last moment, and with everyone working feverishly, the dance was given in a week's time. Last on our list of activities for the year was a movie benefit. This, also, was a profitable undertaking. Bright and early on the morning of May 5, the Sophomores climbed wearily but faithfully out of bed to rush down to see their sister class, the Seniors, off to New York. Each Senior girl was given a corsage, while the Senior boys received boutonnieres. Everyone got an all-day sucker to see Shim through the day. We had hardly turned around when we found the exams had come and gone, and we were once again down the hill to a well earned vacation. W i f Q v s What! September again? Back to school we trudged, but now proud upperclassmen. Our ranks had Q53'E?? ' .' diminished considerably, of the 139 Freshmen, only 61 .N fn remained to begin the Junior year. The president and NS v ,Q secretary continued in their jobs, but a new vice president. X Lamar Bowe, and a new treasurer, Donald Kitchen, were 11963 61- elected. This year got off to a bad start, for just as we got a movie benefit under way, the school and places of amusement were closed because of Influenza. In spite of the epidemic, the class made a profit and kept right on going. The next affair was the junior play, Oh Promise Me, which was really a riot. The plot centered around jimmy Rosso and his double love-life with Jayne Stockton and Virginia Dooley. Amid pills and cough medicines the cast managed to get through rehearsals. The play was a great success. After the play was given everyone had a well deserved rest. The school was closed for another three weeks so the majority ofaus could recuperate from the Flu. It seemed that the Board of Education was bent on being kind to us this year, for we got still another vacation in March because of Measles. We still pushed on, however, for ahead was more important work-the pride of all Juniors-The Prom. We really went into this work in a big way. Many a night was spent making the colorful flowers and palm trees that were to transform the school auditorium into a south sea island. Although the whole student body was in an uproar for two weeks before the Prom, and the faculty Was almost gray, when the big night came it was really wonderful. We did run into difhculties though, about the arbor dance. The class decided to have this sweetheart dance, during which the couples passed through an arbor. Hollywood did it, so why couldn't we? Yes, why? Well, we won't go into that-suffice it to say that the arbor fthe project of one certain juniorj got neatly tucked away behind some chairs, and there it rested throughout the evening, a watchful eye or two guarding to mrake sure it stayed put. Oh well, it was a wonderful idea if nothing else. We did have lots of fun too, in conspiring to relegate it to the corner. At least there it had the support of the sturdy walls. Even without this attraction our prom was a great success. We felt proud, too, when it was over, because we had worked hard to mfake this dance, given in honor of the departing Seniors, something they would want to remember. And so another year ended, another trip down the hill, another well earned rest. But with what a difference. We had only one more year to gc and that the greatest of them all-our Senior year. X 1 The summer months flew by quickly, and with the Xl ll 1 04X coming of September the vision of that great hill returned X to our minds. Once again we were back to the routine ' climb. This year we knew we would have to be careful N f and dignified because, as Seniors, it would be our duty to set the example for the other students. 11 946 Q 5' We began to wonder how the long reach of Uncle Sam had affected the class as a whole. It didn't take long to realize that our Uncle had been pretty tough on us, for he had taken our principal, Mr. Ricketts, three of our four class oflicers, and a number of other classmates. This was quite a blow! But, we are told the show must go on, so we went forward. determined to do our best. As usual, uppermost in our minds were thoughts of increasing the amount in the class treasury. It was decided to assess each student, and so we wound up with paying class dues. Our activities for the year got started with a bang-up Sports Dance from which we netted quite a sizable profit. As a new means of raising money we had the children visit Santa at the Canteen and get a prize. -Successful undertaking number two! We did not stop there, our next venture was the senior play. The play was chosen, the cast selected, and only after rehearsal upon rehearsal was it ready to be given. There were times when we all held our breath in fear and trembling that for any one of a number of reasons the play might not be given. Be that as it may, everything managed to work out, and on january 10 the curtains opened for the first performance of Our Girls. Two performances were given, and another success chalked up. We did it again! Maybe we thought things would slow down for a while, but that was not tor us. More was about to happen. This time it was the senior trip to the big city! What a time we had! From the moment we set foot in New York City until we dragged our weary anatomies homeward, we saw Everything, did Everything, and ate Everything. Did you ever have Smorgasbord? Boy, what a dish! Round and round we went, piling up the food until it was an athletic feat to make one's way safely back to the table. Higher and higher we went- from the depths of the subway to the top of the Empire State Building-from one end of the city to the other-over and under we climbed-plays, radio broadcasts, star gazing, subways, trolley cars, ferrys, taxies, elevators, escalators, walking, riding, sliding. We sure did the town-and we don't mean mlaybe. All good things must come to an end, and so now we must write finis to this chapter of our lives, for now we have come to the threshold leading out into life. We well know that here we jinirla to begin! x ' - 5 , ull' f Ili ll g X I 'ill lkll' :- y, - ,v Name Aneskavich, Robert Bennett, Pauline - -- ----- Bonin, Claire .... - - - Burd, Janet ...... ,,,-, Carducci, Helen - - - - - - - - Case, Esther ....,, , , , Cifelli, Asunda --- ----- Coleman, Doris - - - - - - , - Curtis, Adella .... At last we were freshmen in high school! Our spirits were radiant and suhlime. Then came the hooks and the homework And lessons that had to he done But hy the time we were elegant sophomores We learned hoth to work and have fun. There were eluhs, operettas, and proms, Pep rallies, dances, and plays And we'll never forget how we crammed for exams And were rarely rewarded with A's. After four years we walk with heads high For we are seniors at last! And now as we look to the future We realize the milestones we've passed. A barn dance, scheduled to take place in November, gave everyone an opportunity to learn to square dance. A most successful Christmas Dance followed. Delicious refreshments were served and the auditorium was beauti- fully decorated. A special feature of this dance was a Hoor show given by the junior boys. Did we say boys? Well, they really were boys, although they looked much more like the weaker sex because of their girls' clothing, with mops, turbans, and anything else they could lind, perched perilously upon their manly domes, they were a sight to behold. It was so amusing that everyone could not help but laugh. Next on the program was the junior play, Don't Keep Him Waiting -11 hilarious comedy. Everyone attending enjoyed it immensely and, of course the juniors did, too, because of the financial improvement resulting therefrom. Then came the big event, the Prom, given in honor of the departing Seniors. The juniors were as busy as bees planning the entertainment and refreshments, and transforming the auditorium with fascinating decorations. The members of the class were all worn out by the time the Prom was over. It was really a grand affair and everyone present had an excellent evening. With this affair the juniors brought to a close a very successful year. Clam Adz'i.i'e1'.r: Miss Ronkin, and Miss Long First Row: flvft lu riirllta A1Jtl'Lf?ll't'l Grow, Helly xxutlillkll. ann. The first money-making activity was a pie and cake sale. This was held in October, and proved to be a great success. After getting off to such a good start they became more ambitious than ever and proceeded to give a Snowball Dance - a really grand affair. The auditorium was decorated with huge snow- nien and evergreen trees. The refreshments were delicious, and everyone present enjoyed himself immensely. Too enthusiastic to stop there, however, they went on to sponsor a St. Valentines Dance. Not to be outdone by any other class, these proud Sophs staged a hilarious Hoorshow. Several differ- ent features were presented by the members of the class. This proved to be a gala affair with very tasty refreshments and spectacular decorations. As no other activities were planned for the year, the energetic Sophs settled down to just plain studying. You've set a record to be proud of, and certainly one to live up to. With the help of their elected ofiicers and their class advisers they planned what they were going to do during the year. The nrst event undertaken was a toy sale. This took place in St. Andrew's Hall a few weeks before Christmas. It was very successful and the Freshmen opened their treasury with quite a sizeable amount. Next the busy Frosh gave a St. Patrick's Day Dance. They were as industrious as beavers to make this dance a huge success, and had everything planned weeks ahead of time. They proudly stated that they would have a bigger and better Hoorshow than either the juniors or Sophomores had had. Wlieii the big event finally rolled around, it met with their expectations. The tloorshow was wonderfulg the decorations and refreshments were in excellent taste. liveryone attending had a most enjoyable evening. OI Ca l'1 ll 7 45 O 32 FOOTBALL None of us will ever forget that spectacular Thanksgiving game with Flemington. The traditional rivalry of the two opposing teams was augmented by the fact that the Red and Black team had beaten Lambertville 18-0 in an earlier game. Although the Steel and Blue had a much lighter team than Flemington, they were able to hold the score at 0-0, largely through the skill that Coach Stephens boys displayed in handling the ball, and the flying feet of those running with the pigskin. Despite the fact that the field was practically a sea of mud, both teams came very close to scoring several times. The tide of the onrushing players was always turned at the crucial moment. The coating of dirt and slime made it almost impossible to recognize Amos Hendricks, full back, Bernard Gaspari and Eugene Carmody, left and right half-backs, Ernie Holcombe, quarter back, Bill Akers and Victor Rose, left and right ends, Robert Aneskavich and Charles Holcombe, left and right tackles, Dick Cavallo and 'lack Holcombe, left and right guardsg and Warren Knechel, center. The substitutes, Clement Hoagland, Nick Cicchino, Douglas Gimson, and Paul Heath were likewise indistinguish- able, since they, too, saw plenty of action. The team suffered another loss in the game with Buckingham. The last game, however, turned the tide. Our team came through with a score of 5-4 four favorj. Members of the Lambertville High quintet were among the shortest in this section, averaging only five feet eight inches in height. Harry Mohn, the captain, held down the right forward position with jake Holcombe on the left, while Amos Hendricks played the pivot slot. Ernest Holcombe and Bud Dorrell, dependable guards, rounded out the squad. Holcombe, Mohn, and Dorrell will be graduating this year. The team will be losing its star players. The high light of the season came when L. H. S. upset the over-confident Pennington Central five, who had previously beaten them 38 to 12.
