Track and Field Several bright spots appeared during the sea- son among Lamar Tech's young track team. Carl Babcock began his first year as head coach of the Cardinals left with few veteran per- formers after five key members of the 1968 team and their coach, Tyrus Terrell, were killed in a tragic plane crash last year. Jackie Colbert set several new records as did Ken Terrell, David Post, Gary Parker, and Ed Prejean. With steady improvement during the season, the Cardinals swept to second place in the Southland Conference Meet held in San Antonio. Lamar Tech placed sixth in the University of Houston Invitational, fourth in the Border Olympics, fifth in Louisiana State University Invitational, fifth in a second University of Hous- ton Invitational, third in a triangular meet at Mc- Neese State College, and first in a triangular meet at University of Southwestern Louisiana. The Car- dinals also entered the Southwestern Relays, Texas Relays, Drake Relays, Arlington Relays and the Meet of Champions in Houston. Although no points were kept, Lamar Tech took seven first places in a quadrangular meet in Beaumont with Rice University, Texas A8zM University and the University of Texas. ln May, the Ty Terrell Relays, one of the nation's top track meets, was held in Beaumont for the sixth year. A number of Lamar Tech athletes participated in the meet which is named in honor of the college's late track coach.
