Football Lamar Tech entered t.he 1968 football campaign without a proven quarterback and with only seven returning offensive and defensive starters from its 7-3 won- lost 1967 season. Playing a tough schedule, the Cardinals rang up their worst season record in history, 0-10. Injuries also plagued the team, and several members gave up football, reducing the depth of the squad. Lamar Tech: 7 West Texas State: 45 The 1968 edition of the Lamar Tech Cardinals was opened by the West Texas State University Buffaloes as they handed the Birds their first loss of the season, 45-7, in Canyon. The Redbird defense, headed by Lotice Cole, Barry Lussier, Richard Cummings, Randy Nunez and John Blackwell, had the awesome task of stopping the Buffs' All-America candidate Eugene QMercuryJ Morris, who romped through the Cardinal line for 229 yards and four touchdowns. Offensively, the Cards did better than the score indicates. Showing signs of promise were Robert Fontno, who picked up 78 yards on 21 carries, and quarterback Jim Jackson, completing 10 of 17 passes for 93 yards. The Cardinals' lone touchdowncarne from a 141-yard pass to Kenny Montgomery. Wayne Weaver booted the extra- point, thus ending the night's scoring for the Birds. Scrambling .lim Jackson pivots in an attempt to elude a McNeese tackler.
