Track The Lone Star Conference title eluded the Cardinal trackmen for the second consecutive year as Howard Payne once more claimed the team championship and Tech finished in the runnerup role, but all was not despair for the Cardinal runners. , Tech captured two meet titles and finished second in anotherf The two championship runs were the North Texas Relays at Denton and the Southwest Texas Relays at San Marcos, while Tech was second behind Texas Southern at the Border Olympics. At the Border Olympics, a Lamar athlete, Colin Ridg- way, performed one of the greatest feats ever attained by a Texas collegian, clearing 7-OM in the high jump to become the leading jumper in the nation. The Cardinals were equally successful in small meets, winning three dual or three-way meets while losing none. Among the teams Lamar met and overcame were the Uni- versity of Houston, running against the Cougar varsity and freshmen teams. Besides Ridgway's outstanding mark, Lamar athletes also posted some other fabulous times and heights. Freshman Barry Boecher put on a great performance in the mile, re- cording a 4:14.8 to become a nationally ranked frosh in that event, as did frosh hurdler C. Modica. Modica ran the highs in 14.5. F rosh Anthony Guillory tossed the shot 54'-11', for another school record, while veteran vaulter Mickey Nash met defeat only 'once during the season. Senior Bobby Jancik capped his career with a record toss of 203'-HM to take first in the conference meet, while Jerry Dunn ran a full two seconds under his best time in the 880 to record a 1:53.9 and a first place in the league meet. Ian Stewart, running in his last meet for Tech, won the two mile run in 9:58.8, his third conference win in the event in as many years, and also notched a fourth place finish in the mile. Ridgway was awarded the Oscar Strahan award as the outstanding field event man in the conference meet. l.dmcsr's Mickey Ndsb set cz new LSC meet record in the poie vdult-l4'O3!,, .
