Golf The Cardinal golf team maintained its stranglehold on the Lone Star Conference championship this year, winning its ninth title in the sport since 1953. The medalist title evaded the Redbirds' grasp in the links show, though, as Chuck Palmer was two strokes off the pace set by Southwest Texas Stateis Bill Loftin. Tech won the team title by 16 strokes over its nearest opponent. Palmer more than made up for the two stroke loss he suffered in conference tournament play, coming on strong in the NCAA College Division regional tournament to take medalist honors by one stroke margins over teammates Bill Lively and'Jerry Colby. The Cardinals won the NCAA title with a total of 868. Other members of the championship team were Danny Swain who placed fourth with 218 strokes and alternate Bill Willis. Palmer, Cozby, James Wright, Bill Willis and Lively formed the team that won the conference championship. Tech managed only one other tournament first in 1962, but was outstanding even in defeat as they matched strokes with the top golf teams in the nation. The Cardinals finished fourth in the Southwest Recreation meet, won the Lake Charles Intercollegiate, were second in the l'niversity of Nliami lntereollegiate, and were fourth behind a great field in the .Xll-gXineriea lntereollegiate at llouston. The latter meet featured ten of the liest eollegiate teams ever assembled in the nation. Only two members tif the tt-:un graduate, l'almer and YN right.
